ECHO — PRACTICE RECORD Videomontazher / Fairlight / SPACE / FX · 09 Reference review: 8 October 2026 TASK Build a clear repeat pattern by separating channel delay, feedback timing and self/cross returns. Record audible changes and judge the complete tail inside the scene. Work in a duplicate timeline. 1. PREPARE THE SOURCE AND SIGNAL PATH Resolve version and edition: ____________________________________________ Project / duplicate timeline: ___________________________________________ Short source — word, hit or sound effect: ________________________________ Comparison range, in / out: _____________________________________________ Next important line or picture accent: __________________________________ Choose Echo on one clip, a track or a dedicated FX bus. Use Audio FX in the Effects Library for a clip. Use + in the Mixer channel's Effects section for a track or bus. Confirm the name of the object being processed. Scope and name: ________________________________________________________ Channel format: ________________________________________________________ Echo's position among other inserts: ____________________________________ Dry path to the mix: ____________________________________________________ Send and return, if used: _______________________________________________ On a multichannel track, Input Format offers Stereo, Mono, Left and Right. Mono in this menu sums L/R to both processing channels. Inserting Echo on an actual mono track produces a single Echo block: a different window setup. Input Format and reason: ________________________________________________ Insert Dry/Wet: ________________________________________________________ For an effect-only parallel return, use 100% Wet with an established direct path. Check the two branches separately. Send / return level: ____________________________________________________ Return output and absence of a send back into itself: ____________________ 2. SEPARATE THE TWO TIMES AND SELF-FEEDBACK Begin without cross-feedback. On one channel, compare two Delay Time values while holding the other settings steady. Keep the preferred value and then change Feedback Delay. For example, 200 and 400 ms provide a clear comparison; they are teaching points, not a finished preset. Add self-feedback gradually for repeated events and watch Output. Channel: Left / Right / mono Echo Delay Time A ______ ms; B ______ ms; chosen ______ ms Change in event placement: ______________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ Feedback Delay A ______ ms; B ______ ms; chosen ______ ms Change in the return pattern: ___________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ Feedback A ______ %; B ______ %; chosen ______ % Tail length and density: ________________________________________________ The manual panel shows 0 ms–1.2 s for both times. Self and cross-feedback scales show −100 to +100%. The sign of a feedback percentage is not an ordinary Output-level adjustment. If comparing signs, keep the magnitude constant and also check the summed channels. Sign comparison performed / skipped; observation: _______________________ 3. CONNECT THE CHANNELS AND SHAPE THE SPECTRUM In stereo, add L→R alone first; then compare with R→L and both directions together. Change one path at a time. On a mono track, record that the cross-feedback part of the exercise was not performed. Left: Delay Time ______ ms; Feedback Delay ______ ms; Feedback ______ % Right: Delay Time ______ ms; Feedback Delay ______ ms; Feedback ______ % L→R ______ %; R→L ______ % L→R only — audible result: ______________________________________________ R→L only — audible result: ______________________________________________ Both directions — audible result: ______________________________________ Stereo / mono comparison: _______________________________________________ Does the original event need more clarity: ______________________________ Compare Low Cut, High Cut and High Ratio separately. Low Cut ______ Hz; High Cut ______ Hz; High Ratio ______ % Change in bass: ________________________________________________________ Change in brightness and repeat development: ____________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ Panel scales: Low Cut 20 Hz–5 kHz; High Cut 100 Hz–20 kHz; High Ratio 0–100%. The manual prose associates the last control with feedback damping, but provides no percentage-to-frequency formula. Choose it for the audible task and record the percentage value. 4. EXAMINE THE IDEA IN THE TEACHING DIAGRAM Open the Echo interactive on the guide page. Left / Right / Both select example source impulses; they are not extra native Input Format options. The model shows seven generations in total, including the first delayed arrival, inside a four-second window. Its rule gives the next path the destination channel's Feedback Delay. Source: Left / Right / Both Initial L ______ ms; R ______ ms Feedback Delay L ______ ms; R ______ ms Self L ______ %; R ______ %; cross L→R ______ %; R→L ______ % Connection changed: ____________________________________________________ Origin of the next prominent return: ____________________________________ Events outside the visible window: ______________________________________ What happens with a large combined return amount: _______________________ Model windows: initial 0–800 ms, feedback delay 50–1000 ms, self/cross −90 to +90%. These are teaching windows. Generation and frame limits do not mean that native Echo ends its tail there. The model does not reproduce the filters, native Echo algorithm or your source audio. Idea to verify in Resolve: ______________________________________________ 5. LISTEN IN CONTEXT, SAVE AND REPEAT Compare Echo with its own Bypass at similar perceived loudness. Check Dry/Wet and Output Level; the illustrated Output scale is −24 to +6 dB. Listen from the initial event to the next important sound. If level keeps building, examine return amounts and routing first: lowering Output alone does not explain the accumulation. Check stereo and mono. Dry/Wet ______ %; Output Level ______ dB Clarity of the initial event: ___________________________________________ Space for the next line: ________________________________________________ Complete tail and Output: _______________________________________________ Mono observation: ______________________________________________________ Automated parameter / interval, if useful: ______________________________ Preset and saved project: _______________________________________________ External routing documented separately: _________________________________ After reopening — matches / differs: ____________________________________ Reference file and render boundaries: ___________________________________ Tail in the file: _______________________________________________________ What improved: _________________________________________________________ What still distracts and the next change needed: _________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ REFERENCES AND SCOPE DaVinci Resolve 21 Reference Manual: chapter 181, Echo, pp. 4107–4108; common Fairlight FX controls on p. 4090; insert scope and order in chapter 180, pp. 4083–4087. https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/UserManuals/DaVinci_Resolve_21_Reference_Manual.pdf https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/fairlight This record stores your settings and observations.
