Brightness relationships around local structures are expanded or compressed, which changes how texture and form read without simply moving the black and white points.
Contrast Pop is a selective local-contrast tool: it can make texture and shape feel sharper and more dimensional, or move in the opposite direction for a softer look. Unlike ordinary global Contrast, it lets you choose the structure scale and restrict the operation to a tonal range.
What it actually changes
Contrast Pop works on local structure. That makes it useful for perceived detail and depth, but it also means that a bad setting can create halos, brittle texture or an over-processed image long before the global waveform looks obviously wrong.

Resolve 21 controls
The screenshot is compact, but the controls are not redundant. Detail Amount answers how much and in which direction; Detail Size answers at what spatial scale; thresholds answer where in tonal range; Softness shapes the transition; Blend mixes the complete result.
Detail Amount controls both the direction and intensity of the effect. At 0.000 Contrast Pop does nothing. Positive values increase local contrast, making detail feel crisper and more dimensional. Negative values move in the opposite direction, reducing local contrast for a softer low-contrast rendering.
Detail Size selects the scale of image structures affected by the local-contrast operation, from finer texture toward larger forms. It is not another strength control. With the same Detail Amount, different Detail Size values can move the look from micro-texture enhancement toward broader modelling around larger structures.
Low Threshold and High Threshold define the tonal range in which Contrast Pop operates. This lets you keep the deepest shadows or brightest highlights out of the operation. That selectivity is central to the effect: local contrast can be concentrated in the midtones or another useful range instead of being applied uniformly across the image.
Softness smooths the transition between tonal areas affected by Contrast Pop and areas that remain largely untouched. Lower softness makes the range separation more abrupt; higher softness helps avoid the impression that the midtones have been processed independently from the shadows and highlights.
Blend mixes the Contrast Pop result with the node's original state. Treat it as the final intensity control for the complete effect. First set Detail Size, tonal thresholds and Detail Amount correctly, then reduce Blend if the full result feels too aggressive.
Threshold logic
Raising the lower boundary can keep the darkest structures out of the operation. This is especially useful when local contrast would otherwise exaggerate shadow noise or dirty texture.
The range between Low and High Threshold is where Contrast Pop can build or reduce local contrast. For many shots, keeping the emphasis in the midtones gives the most natural sense of presence because the extremes remain calmer.
Lowering the upper boundary can prevent bright speculars, windows or highlight texture from becoming brittle. That is often cleaner than reducing Detail Amount for the whole image.
Production workflow
Choose whether the goal is texture, subject separation, midtone presence or, with a negative Amount, deliberate softening. Do not begin by simply pushing the slider.
Keep Contrast Pop on its own node. If only one subject or region should change, restrict that node with a Window/Qualifier and track it when needed.
Set the spatial scale first. Ask whether you want fine surface texture or broader shape modelling. This prevents compensating for a wrong scale with excessive Amount.
Use Low and High Threshold to keep unwanted shadows or highlights out of the operation. Then adjust Softness so the transition remains natural.
Increase positive Amount gradually for a sharper high-contrast look, or move negative when the task is to soften local contrast. Judge the image at 100%, not only fit-to-view.
Inspect halos, skin texture, noise and gradient transitions. If the structure is correct but the effect is a little loud, finish with Global Blend instead of rebuilding the settings.
Tool choice
For strong/selective local contrast with adjustable structure scale, tonal thresholds and soft falloff.
A simpler core Color control for midtone detail presence. Contrast Pop extends the concept with more selectivity and a stronger range.
Use when edge acutance and readability are the primary issue. Sharpening can create different edge artefacts than local-contrast shaping.
Use for overall tonal relationships and curve shaping. They do not select image structures by spatial scale in the way Contrast Pop does.
Common failures
If the spatial scale is wrong, raising Amount only makes the wrong structures more obvious. Reset Amount, choose the structure scale again, then rebuild intensity.
Local contrast makes existing texture more visible — including noise. Protect the lower range or clean noise before the effect rather than blaming Blend.
A setting that looks excellent on stone, fabric or machinery may be too hard for faces. Use a Window/Qualifier or a separate node strategy instead of one global value.
Softness only controls the transition around the tonal thresholds. It cannot remove large-scale halos or excessive local contrast caused by the wrong Size/Amount.
Contrast Pop is best understood not as ordinary Contrast or a simple sharpen filter, but as a selective local-contrast operator. It increases or reduces luminance differences around local structures, while Detail Size chooses the structure scale and Low/High Threshold confine the operation to a tonal range.

Contrast Pop usually makes sense after decode/input transform and primary balancing, once the signal state is predictable, but before synthetic Film Grain. If the shot needs noise reduction, clean it before increasing local contrast; otherwise the FX can enhance both useful texture and noise.
Waveform helps confirm that the overall tonal structure remains controlled, but it does not reveal halos or texture character. The primary validation is bypass + a 100% Viewer, supported by Waveform; on skin, also watch for unwanted perceived saturation or edge contrast.
Contrast Pop is not a colour-space transform. Its thresholds and local-contrast character depend on the signal state entering the node, so do not casually move a tuned FX across Input/Output CST stages or change the surrounding transform chain and expect an identical result.
