Color Compressor

Color Compressor is a targeted colour-consistency tool. You choose a Target Color and then independently compress variation in Hue, Saturation and Luminance around that colour, instead of changing the whole image at once.

This page documents only the Resolve FX itself. ColorSlice remains the broader hue-region grading tool, Curves remain the curve-based correction family, and Qualifier stays the canonical isolation workflow.

The effect is deliberately small: one target and three compression axes

The workflow is straightforward: choose the colour that needs to become more consistent, decide whether the problem is hue, saturation, luminance or a combination, then reduce the final intensity with Global Blend if necessary.

Which colour is targeted

Target Color

Target Color defines the colour around which Color Compressor builds its correction. You can set it with the colour swatch or eyedropper. This is the core idea of the effect: first choose a specific colour region, then decide whether Hue, Saturation or Luminance should be compressed.

Compress Hue

Compress Hue reduces hue variation around the selected Target Color. In practice it is useful when neighbouring hues on the same object wander more than desired and you want to pull them closer to a chosen colour without building a full Qualifier isolation.

Compress Saturation

Compress Saturation controls saturation variation around the Target Color. It is useful when the chosen colour is oversaturated in some areas and noticeably weaker in others, and you want a more coherent result without changing global Saturation for the whole frame.

Compress Luminance

Compress Luminance reduces brightness variation inside the selected colour region. It is not a global contrast control: the effect works around Target Color and can make a specific coloured object look more even in brightness when lighting or reflections create excessive variation.

Global Blend

Global Blend mixes the configured Color Compressor back with the original image. It is a useful finishing control: first make Target Color and the three compression axes behave correctly, then restore as much of the original as the shot needs.

Practical use

Where Color Compressor is more useful than a global correction

Product and brand colours

When the same product colour changes slightly across highlights, reflections or different parts of the object, Color Compressor can pull those variations closer together without flattening the whole frame.

Wardrobe and set consistency

A shirt, wall, prop or accent light can become more stable shot-to-shot or within one unevenly lit frame when the target colour is well chosen.

Fast local colour cleanup

When the job is simply to reduce variation around one colour, this FX can be faster than building a full Qualifier, window and secondary node chain.

Controlled finishing pass

Used gently on a separate node, Color Compressor can be a final consistency pass after primary grading without replacing the underlying grade.

Common mistakes

Most failures come from a bad target or excessive compression

Sampling the wrong target

If you sample a highlight, shadow or contaminated reflection instead of the representative colour, the compressor will organise the wrong region.

Compressing all three axes too aggressively

Heavy Hue + Saturation + Luminance compression can make the object look flat and synthetic. Start with the axis that actually contains the problem.

Using it instead of a proper isolation

If other objects share the target colour, a dedicated Qualifier or window can be safer. Color Compressor is not a substitute for a complex matte workflow.

Reducing variation around a Target Color

Color Compressor: the signal-level model

Color Compressor does not isolate an object like a Qualifier and does not replace global saturation. It defines a Target Color and independently reduces hue, saturation and luminance variation around that target — making a family of nearby pixels more consistent.

Blackmagic’s official training guides use the effect exactly as a Resolve FX Color tool for evening out a specific colour area: choose Target Color, then increase the required compression axes. It is a per-pixel colour operation; spatial isolation, tracking and matte finesse are added with separate Color tools when needed.
Do not treat the effect as a smart mask. If the same colour exists in the background, Color Compressor may affect it too. Spatial selection belongs to Windows/Qualifiers/Masks; the Compressor performs colour compression.

Use it when

  • grass, fabric or paint/product colour with unwanted hue variation
  • stabilising saturation/luminance inside one colour family
  • quick clean-up before a more complex secondary grade

Choose another tool when

  • you must isolate one object from others of the same colour — use Qualifier/Window/Tracker
  • you need to shape several colour regions at once — ColorSlice/Curves provide a broader model

Production workflow

  1. 01Use a dedicated Serial node and, if needed, restrict the area with a Window/Qualifier before tuning the FX.
  2. 02Choose Target Color from a representative part of the object.
  3. 03Identify the real problem axis: Hue, Saturation or Luminance; start with one axis.
  4. 04Add the second/third axis only when scopes and the viewer show a separate problem.
  5. 05Check other objects sharing the colour, motion/matte behaviour, and only then reduce Global Blend if needed.

Diagnostics: symptom → cause → fix

The background with the same colour also changes

Likely cause: The FX works by colour and no spatial isolation has been supplied.

Fix: Add a Window/Qualifier/Tracker or place the FX in a branch with an existing matte.

The object becomes uniform and plastic

Likely cause: Compression is too strong on several axes at once.

Fix: Reset the controls, identify one problem axis and preserve natural variation.

Target Color is set but the wrong region changes

Likely cause: The sample came from a highlight/shadow/reflection rather than the main material colour.

Fix: Sample several representative frames and choose a stable midtone target.

Node placement

Color Compressor usually makes sense after basic normalisation/exposure and before final look/texture stages. For product/brand colour work, keep it on a dedicated labelled secondary node/branch so global look nodes do not hide a poor target selection.

Scopes / validation

Vectorscope is especially useful for Hue/Saturation compression: watch the cluster tighten around the target. Waveform helps assess Luminance compression. RGB Parade helps when the targeted colour starts contaminating neutral channels.

Managed-pipeline warning

Color Compressor is a creative/secondary operation, not a colour-management transform. First bring the signal into a stable working state; do not use the Compressor to hide a wrong Input Transform, white balance or gamut mapping.
