Motion Effects in DaVinci Resolve

Temporal NR, Spatial NR and Motion Blur look like one technical panel, but each solves a different problem. This guide shows where to start noise reduction, which controls matter and how to avoid a plastic image.

Temporal NR and Spatial NR clean the image in different ways. Motion Blur changes how movement looks. Understanding that distinction makes the entire panel much easier to use.

Temporal NR

The controls that actually change Temporal NR behaviour

Do not start by pushing every threshold. First establish the temporal analysis, then refine luma, chroma and motion behaviour.

Frames

Controls how many neighbouring frames participate in the analysis. More frames can strengthen noise reduction, but increase processing cost and require careful motion checks.

Motion Estimation Type

Selects how motion between frames is estimated. The more complex the movement and fine detail, the more important it is to avoid turning real motion into artefacts.

Motion Range

Sets the scale of motion the algorithm tries to account for. Too small can miss fast movement; too large can add processing cost without a useful gain.

Luma / Chroma / Motion Threshold

Separate luminance and chroma noise treatment and influence how strongly moving areas are processed. These are the controls you normally refine after choosing the base mode.

Blend

Lets you reduce the final Temporal NR effect. Useful when the cleaned image starts to feel too plastic and you want some original texture back.

Practical workflow

A clean image is not the image with the strongest noise reduction

The target is a natural image with distracting noise reduced, not a perfectly smooth frame with destroyed texture.

First identify the actual noise

Inspect the image at 100% and look at shadows, flat surfaces and chroma noise. Do not enable NR just because the panel exists.

Start with Temporal NR

When motion allows it, Temporal NR is usually the logical first step because it uses neighbouring frames and can reduce noise with less loss of spatial detail.

Add Spatial NR only when needed

Use it as a second cleanup layer, not as a maximum-strength filter. If skin, hair and texture start to smear, the settings are already too aggressive.

Judge Motion Blur separately

Do not treat Motion Blur as part of noise reduction. It is a separate visual decision, best judged after the image is technically clean.

Temporal NR first

Use motion-aware frame comparison when it gives a stable result. It often removes random noise before you need to soften the image spatially.

Spatial NR as a finishing pass

Use it to clean what remains, not to erase every texture. Radius and luma/chroma thresholds should be judged against real detail.

Motion Blur only when the shot needs it

Treat it as a creative or technical motion decision. If the source already has natural motion blur, adding more can make movement feel heavy or smeared.

What is the difference between Temporal NR and Spatial NR in DaVinci Resolve?

Temporal NR compares multiple frames and uses motion to separate noise from detail. Spatial NR works within a single frame. In practice, Temporal NR is often used first and Spatial NR as a secondary cleanup stage.

How many Frames should you use in Temporal NR?

There is no universal value. Start with a small number of frames and increase only when the noise genuinely requires stronger processing. The more complex the motion, the more carefully you should check for ghosting and detail loss.

Why can noise reduction make the image look plastic?

This usually means Temporal or Spatial NR is removing fine texture along with noise. Reduce thresholds, radius or overall Blend and compare skin, hair and fine texture carefully.

Should Temporal NR and Spatial NR always be used together?

No. If Temporal NR already gives a clean, natural result, Spatial NR may not be necessary. Add another stage only when visible noise remains and actually matters.

What is AI UltraNR and when should you use it?

AI UltraNR is a Spatial NR mode in Resolve Studio. It analyses a selected flat image patch as a noise sample, so choose an area without useful texture first and then judge the result on skin, hair and fine detail.

Does Motion Blur in Motion Effects remove noise?

No. Motion Blur is for the appearance of movement, not noise reduction. Temporal NR and Spatial NR handle cleanup; Motion Blur handles motion appearance.

Reduce noise until it stops distracting — not until it disappears completely

Real images contain texture. If the shot becomes perfectly smooth, the cleanup has probably started removing useful detail as well. Compare before/after at 100%, especially on skin, hair, fabric and fine edges.

Temporal NR, Spatial NR and Motion Blur share one palette but operate on different principles. Temporal NR looks for persistent structure across neighbouring frames and separates it from random noise using motion estimation. Spatial NR analyses patterns within a single frame. Motion Blur uses motion estimation not for cleanup but to synthesise motion blur. The professional goal is not the smoothest possible image; it is reducing noise until it stops distracting while preserving texture and temporal stability.

Aggressive settings cannot compensate for choosing the wrong method. Identify the artefact first, then use the minimum processing that solves it.

Working sequence

1. Diagnose noise at 100%

Separate luminance grain, chroma speckles, compression artefacts and real texture. NR should not treat blocking, sharpening halos or intentional film grain as the same defect.

2. Use the minimum sufficient Temporal NR

Start with a modest temporal window and conservative luma/chroma thresholds. Play through motion rather than judging a single frame because temporal artefacts reveal themselves over time.

3. Use Spatial NR only for what remains

After Temporal NR, judge what genuinely remains. AI UltraNR should be analysed on a representative noisy frame, and its sample patch and texture retention should always be checked.

4. Compare before/after in motion

Compare node bypass on difficult regions such as hair, fine foliage, skin, moving hands and camera pans. Good NR should not replace one artefact with another.
