Color Generator

A deliberately simple Resolve FX that generates one solid colour, lets the eyedropper sample the current node input, and uses Global Blend for a direct dry/wet mix. Its real power appears when that colour becomes a controlled layer inside node compositing.

The panel is tiny. The compositing implications are not.

Blackmagic defines Color Generator as a single-colour generator designed to work well with Layer Mixer compositing. The crucial behaviour is equally simple: the eyedropper samples the image entering the current node, while Global Blend controls how much of the generated result replaces that input.

The generated colour

Color

Color Generator creates a solid colour inside Resolve FX. It is not a hue correction applied to the source image: the effect generates a uniform RGB result. The colour is chosen through the swatch/colour picker, which makes the tool especially useful as a dedicated layer for Layer Mixer, masks and controlled compositing.

  • The swatch opens Resolve's standard colour picker
  • On a regular serial node the result becomes a solid-colour layer
  • For a meaningful mix, Layer Mixer, a key/mask or Global Blend are usually more useful
Sampling from node input

Eyedropper

The eyedropper beside Color samples from the Viewer. The important Reference Manual detail is that sampling is taken from the image at the input of the current node, not from the already generated or mixed output of that same node. This makes the eyedropper useful for lifting an exact colour from the incoming shot before building a separate colour layer.

  • The eyedropper does not sample the effect from its own output
  • Useful for brand colours, background fills and local washes
  • After sampling, still evaluate the colour at the intended pipeline position
Final dry/wet

Global Blend

Global Blend mixes the generated colour with the current node input. At 1.000 the effect fully outputs the chosen colour; reducing Blend brings the source image back and turns Color Generator into a simple colour wash. For complex compositing, blend modes and independent layer control, a Layer Mixer remains more flexible.

  • 1.000 = full generated-colour result
  • Below 1.000 = direct mix with the node input
  • Blend does not replace a Layer Mixer when composite modes are required

Production workflow

Six checks from solid swatch to a controlled colour layer

First define the role of the generated colour: full-frame fill, wash, background, graphic colour layer or a Layer Mixer composite element.

Choose Color manually or with the eyedropper. When sampling from the shot, remember that the eyedropper reads the current node input.

If the colour should affect only a region, constrain the node with a key/window/matte. Use a Layer Mixer when you need it as an independent compositing layer.

For a simple wash, reduce Global Blend. For Multiply/Screen/Overlay and more complex maths, move the job into a Layer Mixer/compositing workflow.

Check the result full-frame and across neighbouring shots: a solid colour can hide pipeline mistakes immediately if it accidentally replaces the main image path.

If the layer is a technical fill or matte helper, label the node. A week later, an unnamed solid-white node is almost indistinguishable from a mistake.

Common failures

Most Color Generator problems are node-routing problems, not colour-picker problems

Cause: Color Generator is sitting on a regular serial node at Blend 1.000.

Fix: That is expected behaviour. Use a Layer Mixer, mask/key or reduce Global Blend depending on the job.

Color Generator: the signal-level model

Color Generator is best treated not as another grading control but as a source generator inside the node graph. It creates one solid colour, which can then be mixed with the image through Global Blend, constrained with a key/window or fed as a separate branch into a Layer Mixer. Routing defines most of the effect's practical value.

Color defines the generated RGB colour. In Resolve, the eyedropper samples the image entering the current node—an explicit behaviour documented in the Reference Manual. Global Blend then mixes the generated result with that input. The same Color value can therefore play very different roles on a serial node, a masked node and a Layer Mixer branch.
Do not confuse Resolve FX Color Generator with an Edit-page Solid Color/Generator clip. The former lives inside the Color node pipeline; the latter is a separate timeline source. Also do not use Color Generator as a substitute for Primaries/Offset when the task is to correct the existing image rather than create a new colour layer.

Use it when

  • a solid-colour branch in a Layer Mixer for controlled compositing
  • a mask/window fill, background or graphic colour layer inside the Color page
  • a quick colour wash through Global Blend when a complex composite mode is unnecessary

Choose another tool when

  • you only need to change the balance/tint of the existing shot—use grading controls
  • you need a separate timeline clip/source—use an Edit-page generator

Production workflow

Diagnostics: symptom → cause → fix

The Viewer is completely filled with one colour

Likely cause: The effect is on a serial node at Blend 1.000—this is its normal full-output behaviour.

Fix: Use a Layer Mixer/mask or reduce Global Blend depending on the intended role.

The eyedropper samples an unexpected colour

Likely cause: You are looking at a downstream result while sampling occurs from the current node input.

Fix: Inspect upstream nodes and sample at the pipeline position whose input matches the required state.

The wash cannot be made to behave like Screen/Multiply

Likely cause: Global Blend is a linear dry/wet effect amount, not a full composite-mode selector.

Fix: Feed Color Generator as a separate Layer Mixer branch and choose the required composite mode there.

Node placement

Placement depends on the task. For a background/fill branch, Color Generator is cleanest on a separate parallel branch. For a masked wash, a dedicated serial node after the base balance is convenient. Do not move a sampled/generated colour across CST/DRT automatically: the same numeric RGB can behave differently in another signal state.

Scopes / validation

Scopes are straightforward for Color Generator: a full-frame solid colour should produce the expected compact RGB/vector signature; below Blend 1.000 the scopes show the mix with the input. For masked/composited uses, monitor the Viewer, vectorscope and routing together because a technically correct swatch can still be compositionally wrong.

Managed-pipeline warning

The effect has no explicit Input/Output Colour Space override. It generates colour in the node's current processing context. There is no need to duplicate gamut/gamma theory here: when the layer must remain stable around transforms, lock placement and use Colour Management/Colour Science for the broader signal contract.

FAQ

Practical Color Generator questions

Is Color Generator the same as Solid Color on the Edit page?

No. Resolve FX Color Generator works inside the node-based Color workflow. An Edit-page generator is a separate timeline clip/source. Choose based on whether you need a new timeline clip or a generated layer inside the grade/composite.

Why does Color Generator have only two main controls?

Because its job is intentionally narrow: create one colour and optionally mix it with the input. Geometry, masks and complex compositing are handled by other node tools in Resolve.

Can Color Generator tint an entire shot?

Yes. Lowering Global Blend creates a direct colour wash. For a more controlled creative mix, a Layer Mixer with a composite mode is usually more flexible.

Do RGB, gamut and gamma need to be re-explained here?

No. For this FX it is enough to understand that the generated colour lives in the signal state at the current node-tree position. The broader theory belongs in Colour Science and Colour Management.
