Film Grain Presets · Composite · Opacity

Film Grain Presets selects the starting character of the procedural grain: 8mm, 16mm and 35mm families with stock/speed variants. It is not a LUT or colour transform — the preset seeds the grain generator. Composite Type defines how the grain layer is mathematically combined with the image, while Opacity controls the overall contribution of that layer.

  • 8mm generally starts coarser/more obvious; 35mm starts finer and calmer
  • A preset is a starting point, not a historically exact emulation of one stock
  • Opacity works best as the final trim after the structure is tuned
How grain enters the image

Composite Type

Overlay is a neutral starting point, but the menu also includes Multiply, Darken, Lighten, Screen, Subtract, Hard Light, Soft Light, Linear Light, Vivid Light and other modes. They do not merely change strength — they alter how the grain layer interacts with source luminance. The same Grain Strength can therefore feel radically different under different Composite Types.

  • Overlay / Soft Light are useful integrated-texture starting points
  • Screen/Lighten bias the result toward lighter grain
  • Multiply/Darken emphasise the darker component
Grain geometry and contrast

Texture · Size · Aspect · Strength

Texture controls separation between individual grains: larger values spread them apart, smaller values build a denser pattern. Grain Size scales the grains themselves. Grain Aspect Ratio stretches or compresses their shape. Grain Strength changes the contrast of the grain layer — unlike Opacity, it changes the internal structure before that layer is composited into the image.

  • Texture = spacing/density; Grain Size = scale of an individual grain
  • Aspect Ratio is for deliberately non-square grain structure
  • Judge Strength at 100% and in motion, not only in a reduced viewer
Character of the grain layer

Offset · Symmetry · Softness · Saturation

Offset shifts the brightness of the whole grain layer and therefore changes the balance between light and dark grains. Symmetry redistributes their contrast asymmetrically. Softness blurs transitions between grains and is especially useful when a sharp digital pattern starts resembling a noise overlay. Saturation at 0 makes the grain monochrome; raising it introduces a colour component.

  • Offset and Symmetry reshape the light/dark balance inside the grain
  • Softness blurs the grain layer, not the entire image
  • Saturation = 0 gives monochrome grain
Tonal and channel distribution

RGB · Shadows · Midtones · Highlights

Advanced Controls let you change the Red, Green and Blue contribution to the generated grain, while Shadows / Midtones / Highlights control how much grain is composited into each tonal region. This is one of the most useful sections: if the shadows already contain sensor/compression noise, you can reduce synthetic grain there without removing texture from midtones/highlights.

  • RGB controls change the colour-channel contribution of the grain

Diagnostics and final mix

Grain Only · Freeze · Global Blend

Grain Only isolates the generated grain layer — the clearest way to inspect pattern, density, colour and tonal distribution without the image itself. Freeze holds the pattern for controlled A/B comparisons. Global Blend is the wet/dry mix of the complete Resolve FX; use it after the grain structure has already been tuned with the dedicated controls and Opacity.

  • Grain Only is a layer diagnostic, not final output
  • Freeze is useful for A/B, but final grain must be judged in motion
  • Global Blend is the final overall trim

Preset is not the answer

Gauge names set a starting texture; the shot and codec decide the final grain

The menu gives many 8mm, 16mm and 35mm variants. Use them to get near the desired scale and character, then tune Texture, Size, Strength, Softness and the tonal weights. A preset that looks perfect on a 4K master may become too fine or too strong after a streaming encode.

Practical rule: evaluate Film Grain at 100%, in playback, and after the actual delivery encode. All three views answer different questions.

Production workflow

Six passes from a preset to grain that survives delivery

Choose gauge by texture, not by prestige

Start from 8mm/16mm/35mm according to the scale and character you actually need. A smaller gauge is not automatically more cinematic; it is simply a different starting texture.

Tune structure before intensity

Set Texture, Grain Size, Aspect Ratio, Strength and Softness while inspecting Grain Only at 100%. Opacity cannot rescue a badly shaped grain pattern.

Choose the composite behaviour

Overlay is a safe starting point. Change Composite Type only when the image benefits from a lighter, darker or more contrast-biased interaction.

Distribute grain tonally

Use Shadows/Midtones/Highlights to keep synthetic grain from fighting existing noise or overloading clean highlights.

Judge motion and delivery

Play the shot at speed and test the real delivery codec. Fine grain can disappear, alias or turn into compression mush after H.264/H.265/streaming transcodes.

Trim Opacity / Blend last

Once structure, tonal distribution and composite behaviour are correct, use Opacity and finally Global Blend for the last subjective intensity trim.

Common failures

Most bad grain is a scale, tonal-distribution or delivery problem

Grain looks like digital noise

Cause: Size is too small, Strength too high, Softness too low, or the composite mode is too aggressive.

Fix: Inspect Grain Only, enlarge/soften the structure and lower Strength before touching Opacity.

Shadows turn into a dirty block

Cause: Synthetic grain is stacking on top of sensor noise, denoise residue or codec noise.

Fix: Reduce the Shadows amount, clean objectionable noise before Film Grain, and judge at full resolution.

The grain disappears after export

Cause: The delivery codec/bitrate is smoothing very fine texture.

Fix: Test the actual master and web encode. Slightly larger/stronger grain often survives compression better than ultra-fine low-amplitude noise.

The effect screams 'preset'

Cause: A stock preset was accepted without matching scale, tonal response and delivery to the shot.

Fix: Treat the preset as a base only; reshape Size/Texture/Strength and tonal controls shot by shot or at least scene by scene.

Texture as a separate layer

Film Grain: the signal-level model

Film Grain in Resolve is a procedurally generated texture layer rather than a static overlay file or a colour transform. The plug-in creates individual simulated grains with falloff at project resolution, then lets you shape spacing, scale, contrast, softness, colour, tonal weighting and the way that layer is composited with the image.

Blackmagic's Reference Manual divides Film Grain into Main Controls, Grain Params and Advanced Controls. A preset selects the starting 8mm/16mm/35mm model; Composite Type and Opacity define how the grain layer enters the picture; Texture/Size/Strength/Offset/Symmetry/Softness/Saturation shape the layer itself; RGB and Shadows/Midtones/Highlights define channel and tonal weighting. Grain Only and Freeze are diagnostic modes, while Animate On Every Refresh helps reveal temporal behaviour while tuning.
A preset does not guarantee historically exact emulation of a specific stock, and heavy grain does not automatically make an image 'filmic'. The most common technical failure is judging grain only in the viewer without checking 100%, playback and the real delivery codec. Fine texture is especially sensitive to scaling, sharpening and H.264/H.265 compression.

  • restoring controlled texture after denoise, compositing or overly sterile digital capture
  • integrating clean CG/graphics/retouched regions with live-action imagery
  • scene/timeline finishing when a controlled 8mm/16mm/35mm grain character is required

Choose another tool when

  • you are trying to fix sensor/compression noise — use Noise Reduction first, then rebuild deliberate grain after clean-up
  • you need scratches, dirt, vignette and temporal film damage — that is a separate Film Damage workflow

Production workflow

  1. 01Remove objectionable sensor/compression noise and finish the base grade before building deliberate grain.

Diagnostics: symptom → cause → fix

Grain looks like electronic noise

Likely cause: Grain Size is too small, Strength/edge definition too high and/or Composite Type too aggressive.

Fix: Open Grain Only, increase Size, add Softness and reduce Strength before changing Opacity.

Shadows become dirty

Likely cause: Synthetic grain is stacking on sensor noise, denoise residue or codec noise.

Fix: Clean the noise before Film Grain and reduce Shadows weighting; do not solve it only with Global Blend.

After YouTube/H.264 the grain disappears or turns to mush

Likely cause: The fine texture falls below what the scaling/bitrate/codec can preserve.

Fix: Test the delivery encode and, if needed, increase Size/Strength slightly rather than judging from the master viewer alone.

The preset is too obvious

Likely cause: The default profile was not adapted to resolution, shot contrast and tonal texture.

Fix: Use the preset only as a base; customise Size/Texture/Strength/tonal weighting.

Node placement

Film Grain usually belongs late in the creative chain, after denoise and after spatial FX such as blur/defocus that would otherwise soften the generated grain. Some show pipelines place grain before the output transform so display rendering also acts on the texture; that is valid when the ordering is intentional and consistent across shots. The key is not to add grain before a stage that later destroys its spatial/temporal structure.

Scopes / validation

A 100% Viewer, playback and the delivery encode matter more than classic scopes for the grain itself. RGB Parade is useful for coloured grain/RGB imbalance; Waveform can reveal when Composite Type and tonal weighting make the perceived density too aggressive in shadows/highlights. Grain Only is the primary diagnostic view of the generator.

Managed-pipeline warning

Film Grain does not perform colour management. It composites procedural texture into whatever signal state reaches the node. Scene-referred and display-referred placement can therefore produce different-looking behaviour, especially around strong tone mapping or an output transform. Choose the stage intentionally and do not treat Film Grain as a substitute for CST/DRT or Film Look Creator.

Practical Film Grain questions

Is Film Grain just noise?

No. Resolve procedurally generates simulated grains with falloff at project resolution and exposes controls for spacing, scale, contrast, softness, colour, tonal distribution and compositing.

What is the difference between Grain Strength and Opacity?

Grain Strength changes the contrast of the generated grain layer itself. Opacity fades that already-generated layer against the source. They can therefore produce different results even at similar perceived intensity.

Should I always use 35mm grain for a cinematic look?

No. Gauge is a texture choice. 8mm/16mm can be right for coarse, documentary or archival character; 35mm is generally a finer starting point. Final Size and Strength still need shot-specific tuning.

Where should Film Grain sit in the node tree?

Usually late, after denoise, base correction, major transforms and spatial effects that would otherwise blur or distort the grain. It can sit before an output transform if the look pipeline is designed that way, but document the signal state and avoid accidentally processing the grain twice.

Why use Grain Only and Freeze?

Grain Only exposes the generated layer without picture content; Freeze holds the random pattern so structural changes can be compared against the same grain sample. Unfreeze and play before final approval.

Is Film Grain available in the free Resolve?
