Presets define a starting configuration for the whole Film Look Creator: the current Resolve 21 panel shows Default 65mm, Default 35mm, Aurora, Cinematic, Bleach Bypass, Nostalgic, Default No Effects, Clean Slate and Custom. Color Blend controls the colour portion of the look, while Effects Blend controls the spatial film effects. 3D LUT Compatible removes operations that cannot be represented by a conventional 3D LUT.

  • Default No Effects keeps the underlying Blackmagic film look while disabling the additional spatial effects
  • Color Blend and Effects Blend control different parts of the effect — do not replace both with Global Blend
  • 3D LUT Compatible is for LUT-export workflows, not a higher-quality mode
Signal contract

Color Space Overrides · Output White Point

Input Colour Space / Input Gamma and Output Colour Space / Output Gamma describe the signal entering Film Look Creator and the state expected at its output. Use timeline is convenient in RCM/ACES, where the effect can follow the timeline colour space. In manual DaVinci YRGB, overrides must be chosen deliberately. Blackmagic explicitly notes that manual overrides here do not perform tone mapping. Output White Point defines the target white point; D65 is the default shown in the panel.

  • Use timeline is correct only when the timeline really describes the signal state at this node
  • Do not duplicate a CST/RCM/ACES transform inside Film Look Creator without a clear reason
  • White point is part of the output description, not a replacement for the creative White Balance control
Base film response

Film Look Blend · Core Look · Skin Bias

Film Look Creator first applies an underlying Blackmagic film look built from a large set of baked-in parameters. Film Look Blend controls the strength of that base treatment. Core Look selects a treatment variant — the current Resolve 21 menu shows Cinematic, Rochester, Akasaka, Elated, Vintage and Aurora. Skin Bias lets you offset skin response relative to the base look when the overall palette works but skin needs a different compromise.

  • Core Look is a Blackmagic treatment variant, not a promise of exact manufacturer/stock emulation
  • Film Look Blend establishes the base first; Color Blend then trims the colour adjustments
  • Skin Bias is useful after choosing the Core Look, not as a substitute for proper skin isolation in difficult shots
Photometric and colour shaping

Color Settings

Exposure behaves photometrically in stops. Contrast shapes the overall S-curve; Highlights and Highlight Rolloff shape the upper tonal response, while Fade / Fade Rolloff shape the lower end. White Balance uses chromatic adaptation and Tint shifts the green/magenta balance. Subtractive Sat and Richness provide film-oriented saturation shaping, while Bleach Bypass adds a desaturated higher-contrast component over the image.

  • Exposure here is part of the film-response model; it does not have to own the scene's base exposure correction
  • Subtractive Sat and Richness are not equivalent to a conventional Saturation control
  • Bleach Bypass is best balanced together with Contrast/Highlights rather than compensated later with an arbitrary node
Colour separation and optics

Split Tone · Vignette · Halation

Split Tone adds opposing hues to shadows and highlights with Amount, Hue Angle and Pivot. Vignette is a simplified built-in edge-darkening control. Halation emulates the characteristic soft coloured glow around bright contrast edges: Amount sets intensity, Radius sets spread, and Saturation/Hue shape its colour. For complex masks/shapes or a more exact halation model, switch to the dedicated Resolve FX.

  • Split Tone is a colour stage and belongs to the LUT-compatible subset
  • Vignette/Halation are spatial operations; a conventional 3D LUT cannot carry them
  • Highlights Only helps keep Halation from glowing every edge in the frame
Highlight diffusion and texture

Bloom · Grain

Bloom creates a soft spread around highlights through Amount and Radius. Grain is a simplified film-grain section with Preset, Amount, Size, Softness, Saturation and Image Defocus. The current panel offers 65mm, 35mm, 16mm, 8mm, Aurora and Custom. Image Defocus lowers the image's perceived resolution but does not alter the grain itself. Use the dedicated Film Grain FX when you need full control over grain structure.

  • Bloom is not exposure recovery; it adds spatial glow around existing highlights
  • Built-in Grain is the fast integrated workflow; dedicated Film Grain is the precision workflow
  • Image Defocus affects the image, not the grain — they are fundamentally different controls
Temporal and projection character

Flicker · Gate Weave · Film Gate · Global Blend

Flicker adds a gentle exposure pulse through Amount/Rate. Gate Weave emulates the small X/Y shifts created as film is mechanically pulled through the gate. Film Gate adds blanking/aspect-ratio framing, curvature and padding for a projection/telecine character. Global Blend is the final wet/dry control for the entire Resolve FX and should be the last overall trim after Color Blend and Effects Blend are set.

  • Always judge Flicker and Gate Weave in playback, not from a still frame
  • Film Gate is creative framing, not Deliver-page aspect-ratio metadata
  • Global Blend reduces everything at once; local problems are better fixed inside the relevant module

Scene-referred by design

Use timeline is powerful only when the timeline actually describes this node

Blackmagic designed Film Look Creator for scene-referred workflows. RCM and ACES can make the default signal contract almost invisible because the effect follows the timeline state. In manual YRGB, or after an upstream CST/DCTL/LUT that changes the encoding, the same defaults may become wrong. Film Look Creator is creative — but its input/output contract is technical.

Important: manual Color Space Overrides do not add automatic tone mapping. If a wide-dynamic-range source must be compressed to a display range, that remains a separate pipeline decision.

Production workflow

Six passes from signal contract to a controlled film look

Lock the signal contract first

In RCM/ACES, Use timeline is normally the natural starting point. In manual YRGB, define input/output colour space, gamma and white point deliberately before judging the look.

Choose the base look, not the effects

Start with Preset, Core Look and Film Look Blend. Keep spatial effects restrained or off until the underlying colour/tonal treatment is working.

Shape photometric response

Set Exposure, Contrast, Highlights/Rolloff, Fade/Rolloff, White Balance/Tint, Subtractive Sat and Richness. Use Color Blend only after the internal balance is coherent.

Add optical effects as separate layers

Enable Split Tone, Vignette, Halation and Bloom one at a time. If a module needs more precision, disable it here and use its dedicated Resolve FX on a separate node.

Build texture and motion in playback

Grain, Flicker and Gate Weave are temporal. Inspect grain at 100%, then play the scene to judge cadence; a still frame cannot reveal mechanical flicker or weave.

Trim Color, Effects, then Global Blend

Use Color Blend to trim the colour part, Effects Blend for the spatial/temporal effects, and Global Blend only as the final wet/dry control for the complete plug-in.

Common failures

Most Film Look Creator problems are signal-state or stacking problems

The image looks wrong as soon as FLC is enabled

Cause: The plug-in is interpreting the wrong input/output colour-space/gamma state, often because Use timeline no longer matches the node after an upstream transform.

Fix: Audit CST/RCM/ACES around the node and explicitly set the overrides if the signal no longer matches the timeline state.

The look is 'filmic' but obviously overprocessed

Cause: Core Look, contrast, split tone, halation, bloom, grain, flicker and weave are all strong at the same time.

Fix: Build in layers. Bypass each module and keep only the components that solve a specific visual task.

Skin collapses while the rest of the palette works

Cause: The chosen Core Look / tint / subtractive saturation combination pushes skin too far.

Fix: Try Skin Bias first; if the shot needs selective repair, use a dedicated skin node instead of compromising the whole look.

A LUT export does not match the Film Look Creator node

Cause: Spatial/temporal operations such as vignette, halation, bloom, grain, flicker or gate weave cannot be encoded in a conventional 3D LUT.

Fix: Enable 3D LUT Compatible before building the exportable version and treat the remaining spatial effects as separate downstream stages.

Film emulation as a pipeline, not a preset

Film Look Creator: the signal-level model

Film Look Creator combines two fundamentally different layers: a scene-referred Blackmagic colour/tonal model and a set of spatial/temporal film effects. It therefore should not be treated as one preset. First define the signal state, then choose the base film response and colour shaping, and only then add halation, bloom, grain, flicker, gate weave and film gate.

Blackmagic describes Film Look Creator as a Studio-only effect designed for scene-referred workflows. In RCM/ACES, Input/Output Colour Space and Gamma default to the timeline state. Manual DaVinci YRGB workflows may require explicit overrides. Crucially, manual overrides inside Film Look Creator do not add tone mapping automatically. Color Blend controls the colour layer, Effects Blend the spatial effects, and Global Blend the complete FX.
3D LUT Compatible does not turn the full Film Look Creator into a LUT. It restricts the toolset to operations that can be represented by a pointwise 3D LUT. Halation, Bloom, Vignette, Grain, Flicker, Gate Weave and Film Gate are spatial/temporal operations and cannot be stored in a conventional 3D LUT. The exportable look and the full node look are two different deliverables.

Use it when

  • a fast integrated film-emulation look where colour response and physical film cues should live in one controllable FX
  • scene-referred RCM/ACES pipelines where the timeline state is correctly described
  • building a show look where Color Blend and Effects Blend can be trimmed independently

Choose another tool when

  • you need measured manufacturer-specific emulation of an exact stock — Film Look Creator uses Blackmagic's own film model
  • one module needs substantially finer control — disable it inside FLC and use the dedicated Resolve FX
  • the signal state at the node is unknown while Colour Space Overrides are left at Use timeline by habit

Production workflow

Diagnostics: symptom → cause → fix

The look changes dramatically when FLC moves before/after a CST

Likely cause: The film-response model is receiving a different input encoding/domain.

Fix: Define the intended scene-referred state and keep FLC at a stable pipeline point; do not move it without updating overrides.

Highlights become coloured or dirty

Likely cause: Strong Halation/Bloom, Subtractive Sat/Richness or Bleach Bypass are stacking.

Fix: Bypass modules one by one; fix colour response first, then restore spatial glow at lower intensity.

Skin drifts too far from the overall look

Likely cause: Core Look/Tint/Subtractive Sat create the desired overall palette but skin needs a different compromise.

Fix: Use Skin Bias conservatively; move complex selective skin repair to a dedicated node.

A LUT exported from FLC looks cleaner and poorer than the node

Likely cause: Spatial/temporal modules are not part of a pointwise 3D LUT.

Fix: Compare the LUT only against the 3D LUT Compatible version and keep halation/bloom/grain/flicker/weave as separate downstream effects.

Node placement

In a scene-referred pipeline, Film Look Creator usually belongs after technical normalisation/input transforms but before the final output/display stage — provided that this is the state described by its Input/Output Overrides. Denoise normally belongs before the built-in grain, while spatial effects placed after FLC will also act on its grain/halation. Node placement is therefore part of the look design, not merely organisation.

Scopes / validation

Waveform helps with the S-curve, Highlights/Fade and Bleach Bypass; Vectorscope with Subtractive Sat/Richness/Split Tone and skin hue; RGB Parade with White Balance/Tint. Halation, Bloom, Grain, Flicker, Gate Weave and Film Gate require a 100% Viewer and playback. Add the real delivery encode when judging grain.

Managed-pipeline warning

Film Look Creator is an unusual creative FX with an explicit colour-space contract. In RCM/ACES, Use timeline normally works because the timeline state is already defined. In manual YRGB it should not hide a missing pipeline: define source/working/output states first, then decide whether FLC should own the internal transform or an external CST should. Avoid double transforms and do not treat Output White Point as a substitute for complete colour management.

Practical Film Look Creator questions

Is Film Look Creator a film-stock emulation?

Not in the manufacturer-specific sense. Blackmagic describes it as its own underlying film look with treatment variants and a broad set of film-emulation controls, rather than an exact named-stock recreation.

Why are there Input/Output Colour Space controls inside a creative effect?

Because the film-response model is designed around a defined signal state. In managed scene-referred projects Use timeline can supply that state; in manual display-referred pipelines you may need to describe it explicitly.

Should I use the built-in grain or the separate Film Grain FX?

Use the built-in section when you need a fast integrated film look. Use dedicated Film Grain when grain itself is a critical finishing task and you need full structure, compositing, tonal and RGB controls.

What does 3D LUT Compatible really do?

It restricts the Film Look Creator to operations that can be represented in a pointwise 3D LUT. Spatial and temporal modules are removed from the exportable subset.
