Radial Blur

Radial Blur creates rotational softening around a chosen centre point. It is useful when the image needs circular motion energy, spinning transitions or an intentional stylised sweep that cannot be described by a single straight blur direction.

Radial Blur depends on rotational direction, centre placement and edge handling

The effect becomes readable only when these three things work together: how strong the blur is, where the centre sits, and how the frame edges are handled. Quality and Blend then determine whether it feels rough, clean or deliberately stylised.

Core blur behaviour

Smooth Strength, Blur Type and Blur Symmetry

Radial Blur is defined by blur amount, processing style and rotational direction. Smooth Strength controls intensity, Blur Type changes the feel between Stylized and Realistic, and Blur Symmetry decides whether the blur is symmetric or biased clockwise or anticlockwise.

Channel Adjustment and Center Position

Per-channel Red, Green, Blue and Alpha controls let you scale each channel independently. Center Position sets the X/Y point around which the radial blur is calculated. This centre placement is often the biggest factor in whether the effect feels natural or deliberately graphic.

Quality, Border Type, Move With Sizing and Blur Alpha

Quality sets the processing mode between Faster, Better and Enhanced. Border Type defines how the edges behave: Black, Replicate, Reflect or Wrap-Around. Move With Sizing helps the blur track sizing operations correctly, and Blur Alpha matters when transparency should be part of the effect.

Global Blend

Global Blend reduces or restores the configured Radial Blur without rebuilding the other settings. It is a practical finishing control when the blur structure is right but the overall intensity is still too strong for the shot.

Blur behaviour

Blur Type and Blur Symmetry define the personality of the spin

Realistic tends to feel more natural, Stylized looks more graphic, and Blur Symmetry decides whether the blur spreads evenly or drifts in one direction. These are the controls that make Radial Blur either subtle motion energy or a clear visual effect.

Symmetric

Spreads the blur evenly around the centre and usually feels the most balanced.

Clockwise

Biases the blur in the clockwise direction and adds a sense of rotational push.

Anticlockwise

Mirrors that bias in the opposite direction and is useful when motion should unwind the other way.

Where Radial Blur is actually useful

Spin transitions

Animate Smooth Strength or Blend for stylised transitions that feel like a rotational sweep rather than a simple directional smear.

Energy around a subject

A carefully placed centre can make lights, graphics or UI elements feel energized without blurring the whole frame in one flat direction.

Stylised motion graphics

Stylized mode and asymmetric blur work well on titles, logos and design elements when the goal is graphic movement rather than optical realism.

Local effects on a separate node

Use a dedicated node with a window or key when only a selected region should receive the rotational blur and the rest of the shot must remain stable.

Typical mistakes

The effect falls apart when the centre or borders are ignored

The centre is left at default

If the blur centre does not belong to the composition, the motion can look arbitrary. Small X/Y changes often make a large difference.

Border Type is ignored

Radial Blur can expose the frame edges quickly. Replicate, Reflect and Wrap-Around all behave differently, so the edge strategy should be chosen deliberately.

Using too much Smooth Strength

Heavy rotational blur destroys structure fast. What feels exciting in isolation can become unreadable once the shot must still communicate information.

Choosing Radial Blur instead of Directional Blur

If the movement in the shot is clearly linear, Directional Blur is usually the cleaner choice. Radial Blur works best when the motion should wrap or orbit around a point.

Radial Blur: how the effect behaves in a real node tree

Radial Blur creates the impression of rotation around a chosen centre. The key control is not only Strength but the centre itself, because it defines the compositional meaning of the effect.

A useful mental model is tangential smear around Center Position: for the same angular blur, details farther from the centre describe longer visible arcs. Smooth Strength and Blur Symmetry shape the distribution. Blackmagic does not publish the exact sampling formula.
A wrong centre breaks the sense of physical motion more than a slightly wrong Strength.

Production workflow

  4. 04If the object and centre move, animate/track the position.
  5. 05Check frame edges, then finish with Global Blend.

Diagnostics: symptom → cause → fix

Frame seems to spin around a random point

Likely cause: Center Position is unrelated to subject/camera motion.

Fix: Tie the centre to a real axis or deliberate design anchor.

Periphery turns to mush

Likely cause: Strength is too high for the frame radius.

Fix: Reduce Strength or limit the effect with a mask.

Centre drifts during motion

Likely cause: Center Position is static while the anchor moves.

Fix: Animate/track the centre.

Performance

Strong full-frame rotational blur can be expensive. Use the minimum sufficient strength and cache long 4K/8K sections when needed.

Animation & keyframes

Center Position and Strength are particularly useful to keyframe. For a spin transition, sync the Strength curve with actual rotational speed/edit rhythm rather than simply turning the FX on for a few frames.

Node placement

For a stylised transition, keep Radial Blur on a dedicated node/clip after the base grade. Final grain and light sharpening usually make more sense after the rotational smear.
