Directional Blur

Directional Blur stretches image detail along a controlled angle instead of blurring equally in every direction. It is useful for directional motion-like smears, transitions, stylised streaks and local effects where the direction itself is part of the visual idea.

Build the direction first, then shape the character

The key idea is simple: Strength defines how far the image is smeared, Angle defines where it travels, and the remaining controls decide how natural, stylised and technically clean that smear becomes.

Blur Strength, Blur Angle and Symmetric Blur

Directional Blur differs from a uniform blur because it stretches detail along a chosen direction. Blur Strength controls the length and visibility of the smear, Blur Angle rotates that direction, and Symmetric Blur distributes the effect symmetrically around the original detail.

Blur Type: Realistic or Stylized

Blur Type changes the visual character rather than the direction. Realistic is useful when the result should feel more natural and stay visually restrained. Stylized makes more sense when the directional smear is intentionally used as a visible graphic treatment.

Channel Adjustment

Channel Adjustment controls the Red, Green, Blue and Alpha contribution independently. Equal values keep the effect neutral. Unequal values can create a more stylised channel-split character, but for ordinary grading they should be changed deliberately.

Border Type, Blur Alpha and Global Blend

Advanced Controls define how the directional blur behaves at frame edges and when alpha is involved. Border Type determines how missing edge information is handled, Blur Alpha includes the alpha channel, and Global Blend controls the final amount of the complete effect.

Realistic vs Stylized

The same angle can produce two very different visual intentions

Keep Realistic when the directional blur should support the shot without looking like a graphic effect. Switch to Stylized when the smear itself is part of the design.

Use Realistic when the directional smear should feel integrated with the shot and the viewer should notice the motion or softness before noticing the effect itself.

Stylized is appropriate when the blur is meant to read as a deliberate graphic treatment: transitions, energetic promos, music visuals or other expressive edits.

A controlled angle can reinforce the perceived direction of fast movement without applying a uniform blur to the entire frame.

Put the FX on a dedicated node and restrict it with a Power Window, Qualifier, Magic Mask or another key source.

Using Strength before choosing the direction

A strong blur at the wrong angle feels random. Find the motion or compositional direction first.

Treating Stylized as a quality upgrade

Realistic and Stylized are different visual intentions. Stylized is not simply a better rendering mode.

Changing RGB channels without a reason

Per-channel adjustment becomes visible very quickly and can turn a clean blur into a colour-fringing effect.

Ignoring frame edges

Directional smears can reach the border more aggressively than a short uniform blur, so Border Type deserves a quick check.

Directional Blur: how the effect behaves in a real node tree

Directional Blur builds blur along a chosen Angle, so it is no longer just softening: direction becomes part of the composition and should relate to real or stylised motion in the shot.

A useful mental model is sampling along a line/vector. Strength determines visible smear length, Angle defines orientation, Symmetric Blur changes the balance around the source and Realistic/Stylized changes the profile. Blackmagic does not disclose the exact sampling algorithm.
If Angle does not support subject or camera motion, the viewer reads the effect as a filter rather than a motion cue.

  • pans, whip-like smears and directional transitions
  • light streaks along a chosen vector
  • speed stylisation without a depth map

Choose another tool when

  • motion is radial/centred — Zoom/Radial fit better
  • you need physically faithful shutter motion — this remains a post-process approximation

Diagnostics: symptom → cause → fix

Smear points the wrong way

Likely cause: Angle does not match motion/perspective.

Fix: Follow the subject trajectory rather than a convenient degree value.

Subject looks doubled

Likely cause: Strength/Symmetry are too aggressive.

Fix: Reduce smear and compare blur types.

Frame edge breaks

Likely cause: A long streak runs beyond available frame data.

Fix: Change Border Type or reduce the effect near the edge with a mask.

Performance

Strong streaks and higher quality cost more, especially at 4K/8K. For animated transitions, establish geometry first, then judge final quality settings.

Animation & keyframes

Angle and Strength can be keyframed. If blur follows acceleration, the Strength curve should generally follow motion speed; Resolve 20+ exposes FX keyframes and curves directly.

Node placement

Keep the effect on its own node. For a motion accent, establish the signal/grade first, add the streak, then leave final grain/sharpening after it.
