Zoom Blur

Zoom Blur creates streaking blur that radiates from a chosen centre point. It is useful when the frame needs speed, a punch-in sensation, tunnel-like energy or a stylised rush that feels different from both directional and rotational blur.

The effect becomes convincing only when the zoom amount, the centre point and the center exclusion are working together. Quality and Blend then decide whether the result feels rough, polished or deliberately stylised.

Zoom Blur is defined by the amount of blur, the processing character and what happens in the center. Zoom Amount sets the strength, Blur Type switches between Stylized and Realistic behaviour, and Center Exclusion protects the middle from blur so it can stay more readable.

Channel Adjustment and Center Position

Red, Green, Blue and Alpha let you weight the blur per channel for stylised or technical channel behaviour. Center Position X/Y sets the point from which the blur appears to radiate or converge. This centre placement is what makes the effect feel like a focused rush toward a subject rather than a random smear.

Quality, Move With Sizing and Blur Alpha

Quality changes the processing mode between Faster, Better and Enhanced. Move With Sizing helps the effect stay aligned after sizing operations, and Blur Alpha matters when transparency should be included. In practice these controls are what make the effect integrate cleanly into a node tree.

Global Blend

Global Blend reduces the configured Zoom Blur without rebuilding the key controls. It is the best finishing adjustment when the zoom effect is conceptually right but still too aggressive in the shot.

Blur Type changes whether Zoom Blur feels graphic or more natural

Stylized usually feels more design-driven and explicit, while Realistic tends to sit more naturally inside live footage. The choice depends on whether Zoom Blur is serving motion graphics, a transition or a subtle sense of speed.

Where Zoom Blur is genuinely useful

Speed and impact shots

Zoom Blur works well when a moment should feel like a rush toward a subject, a dramatic reveal or an energetic transition into a key frame.

UI and promo graphics

On graphic elements, text or interface layers, Zoom Blur can create a controlled digital push without needing full 3D animation.

Subject emphasis

Center Exclusion makes it possible to keep a subject more readable while the surrounding image acquires motion energy.

Separate-node stylisation

A dedicated node lets you animate Zoom Amount or Blend and compare versions quickly, which is especially useful for transitions and teaser-style edits.

Typical mistakes

The effect quickly looks cheap if the center is random or the amount is excessive

The centre does not match the composition

If Center Position is arbitrary, the blur feels fake and directionless. The centre should usually support the subject, the vanishing point or the movement emphasis in the shot.

Too much Zoom Amount

Heavy values destroy structure very quickly. What looks impressive on a still frame may become unreadable once the shot is part of a real edit.

Ignoring Center Exclusion

Without Center Exclusion the main subject can lose clarity immediately. Even a small protected centre often keeps the effect much more usable.

Choosing Zoom Blur instead of Radial Blur

If the motion should rotate around a point, Radial Blur is usually the cleaner choice. Zoom Blur is for movement that radiates toward or away from a centre.

Zoom Blur: how the effect behaves in a real node tree

Zoom Blur stretches the image along rays toward or away from a chosen Center Position, so it reads as depth acceleration, punch-in/out or tunnel-like motion.

A useful mental model is radial sampling along rays. Zoom Amount sets streak length, Center Exclusion protects the central region, Center Position defines convergence and Quality trades speed for detail. Resolve does not document the exact internal formula.
If Center Position does not match the subject the eye is supposed to rush toward, the effect loses direction and becomes decorative noise.

Fix: Reposition the centre and increase Exclusion.

Rays drift after zoom/crop

Likely cause: Centre is not following sizing.

Fix: Check Move With Sizing and transform order.

Transition looks cheap

Likely cause: Amount is simply switched on/off with no acceleration curve.

Fix: Shape the keyframe curve around motion/edit impact.

Performance

Enhanced/higher quality and strong streaks increase processing cost. Build the motion in a faster mode, then validate final quality on a short representative section.

Animation & keyframes

Zoom Blur benefits strongly from keyframes. Resolve 20+ can expose Zoom Amount and other FX controls in the Keyframe/Curve Editor for easing and speed-ramp synchronisation.

Node placement

For transitions, place it after the base grade and before final texture effects. If Sizing is animated too, establish the coordinate logic and verify Move With Sizing so the visual centre does not drift.
