Noise Reduction in DaVinci Resolve Fairlight
How Fairlight Noise Reduction fits into dialogue repair: what kind of noise it is meant for, how Blackmagic's current Detect/Learn workflow works, when to process one clip or an entire track, and how to avoid trading background noise for damaged speech.
Separate the useful signal from steady background noise
1. Current controls
Resolve 21 exposes detection, smoothing and output as separate decisions
The labels and visible ranges below come from the supplied live Resolve 21 interface. The screenshot values are one working state, not a universal preset. Blackmagic's public Fairlight documentation confirms the Detect/Learn concept; the current UI lets us document the controls without borrowing names from older versions.
Auto Speech Mode / Manual
Auto Speech Mode is the speech-oriented automatic path visible in the current UI; Manual exposes the Learn workflow. Choose the mode from the problem you actually have rather than assuming one is always superior.
Learn
In Manual mode, Learn teaches the plug-in from a representative noise-only region. Blackmagic explicitly documents selecting noise and clicking Learn so matching noise can be reduced elsewhere.
Listen to Noise Only
Lets you audition what the processor is removing. If consonants, breaths or clearly useful signal dominate this monitor, the detection is too broad or too aggressive.
Threshold · −80 to −3 dB
Sets the detection threshold visible in the current UI. Treat it as a sensitivity boundary, not a loudness target: lower and higher source recordings need different decisions.
Attack · 1–500 ms
Controls how quickly the detector reacts. Very fast behavior can catch more of short noise events but can also interact with consonant attacks; slower behavior may preserve transients while letting more noise through.
Sensitivity · 0.5–5.0
Adjusts how readily the detector identifies material as matching the unwanted noise. Use Noise Only monitoring to make sure useful speech is not becoming part of the removal target.
Ratio · 0.1–0.9
Controls the strength relationship of reduction once noise is detected. The visible range is taken from the current UI; judge the actual result by artifacts and speech continuity, not the number itself.
Smoothing · Time / Frequency
The current UI separates temporal smoothing from Frequency smoothing. These controls help keep the reduction from changing too abruptly across time or spectrum, which can otherwise sound watery or granular.
Dry/Wet · Output Level
Dry/Wet blends processed and original signal; Level compensates the output. Match loudness before A/B decisions so a louder result is not mistaken for a cleaner one.
2. What it is for
Noise Reduction is for a noise profile, not every unwanted sound
Blackmagic's current Fairlight documentation places Noise Reduction among the dedicated cleanup and repair Fairlight FX. It can automatically detect noise in a selected region, or you can select a region containing the unwanted noise and use Learn so the plug-in can identify matching noise elsewhere.
That makes it most useful when the defect has some continuity: steady room tone, fan noise, broadband hiss or another background that can be represented by a useful noise sample. A single click, a mains hum or aggressive sibilance is a different diagnosis and often deserves a different repair tool.
3. Detect and Learn
Give the plug-in a clean example of the problem before asking it to remove it
Blackmagic documents two practical paths: automatic noise detection inside a selection, or teaching the plug-in with a selected noise region and the Learn control. The quality of that example matters. A region dominated by useful dialogue is a poor description of what should be removed.
Find noise only
Choose a range where the unwanted background is exposed and useful speech is absent or minimal.
Detect or Learn
Blackmagic documents automatic detection in a selection, or a Learn workflow based on the selected noise.
Check dialogue
Audition consonants, breaths and room tone. The goal is less noise, not a sterilized voice.
Scale the scope
Use clip processing for an isolated problem; use a mixer channel when the same noise affects the whole track.
4. Clip or track
Apply repair only as broadly as the defect requires
Current Fairlight documentation allows the same repair FX to be dropped directly on a clip or on a Fairlight mixer channel. Use a clip when one recording, one sentence or one location has a different noise problem. Use track processing when the same recording chain and noise character remain consistent across the track.
Blackmagic also documents multiple plug-ins per clip and up to six realtime plug-in inserts per track. That does not mean a voice should automatically use six repair processors. Every additional stage is another opportunity to damage transients, consonants and room tone.
Clip FX
Best when the noise changes between takes, cameras, locations or individual clips. Local processing keeps one bad clip from forcing the whole dialogue track through the same profile.
Track FX
Useful for a consistent recording chain and stable background. One track insert can keep processing coherent across all clips routed through that channel.
5. What to listen for
A quieter file is not automatically a better file
Consonants
Check S, F, T and breathy consonants. If articulation becomes watery, hollow or blurred, reduction has gone too far.
Room tone
A perfectly dead gap can sound less natural than a low, stable room tone. Preserve continuity between phrases and edits.
Transitions
Listen around edits and the beginnings of words. Noise that opens and closes abruptly can draw more attention than the original steady background.
Full mix
Do not judge repair only in solo. Music, ambience and the final mix can mask low-level noise that sounded dramatic when the dialogue track was isolated.
6. Related repair tools
Noise Reduction is one member of the repair chain
Blackmagic currently lists De-Esser, De-Hummer and Noise Reduction side by side in the Fairlight repair section because they solve different defects. Use De-Esser for excessive sibilance, De-Hummer for power-line hum and Noise Reduction for the broader steady noise that remains. Neural Engine voice tools in Resolve Studio solve yet another class of problems and should not be confused with traditional noise profiling.
