Dialogue editing and voice cleanup in Fairlight
A practical workflow for speech inside DaVinci Resolve: choose the right source, balance levels, repair only the problems you can hear, then move into EQ, dynamics and the final mix. We also separate conventional Fairlight FX from Studio-only AI tools so the workflow stays clear.
Start with the recording, not with a plug-in
Choose the right mic/channel and remove obvious edit problems.
Balance clip level before asking processors to fix huge differences.

Place dialogue against music and effects, then automate the result.
This is a diagnostic workflow, not a mandatory fixed insert order. Different recordings need different processing.
1. Before processing
Clean dialogue starts before the first plug-in
Fairlight gives you repair plug-ins, track processing and AI tools, but the first question is still whether the clip contains the correct microphone and channel. Blackmagic's channel-mapping workflow exists precisely because multi-mic and multichannel recordings often contain several possible sources.
Next, get the clip level into a sensible range. If one line is dramatically quieter than the next, do not immediately stack EQ, compression and noise reduction on top of the mismatch. Resolve already provides clip gain, normalization, track level controls and Dialogue Leveler for different kinds of level work.
Choose the source
If the wrong lav, boom or multichannel source is active, no cleanup chain can restore information that was never captured cleanly.
Balance before polishing
Use clip-level controls for local differences and track-level tools when the whole dialogue track needs consistent behavior.
Repair the actual defect
Sibilance, mains hum and broadband noise are different problems. Fairlight has separate tools for them; one aggressive processor should not be asked to solve everything.
Keep perspective
Dialogue should remain believable in the scene. Heavy cleanup that removes every trace of the acoustic space can sound less natural than the original recording.
2. Clip or track
Decide how wide the correction should apply
Blackmagic lets Fairlight FX be applied to individual clips or to a mixer channel for the whole track. This is not just a technical distinction: one damaged sentence is usually a clip problem, while a consistent lav microphone sound across a scene is often better handled at track level.
Clip and track are different control levels
Best when one specific clip needs correction without changing the rest of the track.
Track processing affects the material flowing through that track and is managed from the mixer.
3. Cleanup tools
Do not confuse level control, repair and AI separation
Blackmagic's current Fairlight documentation lists dedicated repair tools such as De-Esser, De-Hummer and Noise Reduction. Dialogue Leveler is used for smoothing inconsistent dialogue levels, while the Studio edition adds Neural Engine voice tools including Voice Isolation and Dialogue Separator.
The important point is that these are not interchangeable. A de-esser should not be your noise reducer, and Voice Isolation is not an equalizer. Diagnose the problem first, then choose the smallest tool that fixes it.

Teach Fairlight what the unwanted noise sounds like
Blackmagic documents both automatic noise detection and a Learn workflow based on a selected noise sample. Do not teach the plug-in with speech mixed into the sample if you want it to identify the background itself.

4. Dialogue Leveler
Leveler solves level movement — not every dialogue problem
Good use
Lines recorded at noticeably different levels, partially off-mic dialogue or multiple speakers whose level differences are distracting.
What it does not replace
It does not remove mains hum, tame sibilance, fix tonal balance or separate voice from a noisy environment. Those are separate tasks.
Track-level logic
When the same kind of dialogue continues across a track, track-level processing gives consistent behavior and avoids duplicating the same setup on every clip.
5. Common mistakes
The cleanest waveform is not always the most natural dialogue
Dialogue cleanup is easy to overdo because every processor can sound impressive in isolation. Judge the result against picture, music and ambience, and bypass processors regularly. Blackmagic's Fairlight tools make A/B listening and bypass practical — use that advantage.
Too much Voice Isolation
Metallic or unstable speech can appear when separation is pushed beyond what the recording needs.
Gate too aggressive
Word endings, breaths and quiet syllables can disappear together with the noise.
Noise sample contains speech
A learned noise profile should represent the unwanted background, not useful dialogue.
Everything on every clip
Repeated identical processing is better handled at track level when the source is consistent.
