Dialogue Processor in Fairlight

A focused guide to the current Dialogue Processor interface: De-Rumble, De-Pop, De-Ess, Compressor, Expander and Excite in one Fairlight insert. The goal is to understand what each stage is for, not to copy the values shown in a screenshot.

1. Six processing stages

Treat each module as a separate decision

De-Rumble

Targets low-frequency rumble. The current UI exposes a Frequency control, so the practical job is to focus the low-end cleanup on the problem actually present in the recording rather than automatically cutting body from every voice.

De-Pop

Designed for plosive-style pops. Resolve 21 exposes Frequency and Amount plus a reduction meter. Increase processing only until the pop is controlled; aggressive settings can thin the start of words.

De-Ess

A dedicated sibilance stage. The live UI exposes Frequency and Amount with its own activity meter. Find the region where the harsh 's' energy actually lives, then use only enough amount to keep diction natural.

Compressor

The Dialogue Processor version uses Threshold, Amount and a Fast/Slow response selector. It is a compact voice-control stage, not a replacement for fixing wildly different clip levels before processing.

Expander

Exposes Threshold, Range and Fast/Slow. Use it to control what happens below a chosen level and to reduce unwanted low-level material conservatively; too much range can make ambience and word tails breathe unnaturally.

Excite

A final voice-shaping stage with Amount plus Female/Male profile buttons in the current UI. Treat those labels as profiles offered by the plug-in, not as a rule about which setting must be used for a particular speaker.

2. Live parameter map

What Resolve 21 actually exposes in each module

The ranges below are read from the supplied current interface. They document the plug-in, not a recommended voice preset: the correct value depends on the recording.

De-Rumble

Frequency: 40–235 Hz. One focused control plus the module enable switch.

De-Pop

Frequency: 50–250 Hz. Amount: 0.00–1.00. A vertical activity/reduction meter is shown beside Amount.

De-Ess

Frequency: 700 Hz–9 kHz. Amount: 0.00–1.00. The module also exposes its own activity/reduction meter.

Compressor

Threshold: −40 to −8 dB. Amount: 0.00–1.00. Response selector: Fast / Slow. A meter shows processing activity.

Expander

Threshold: −70 to −30 dB. Range: 0–30 dB. Response selector: Fast / Slow. Its meter makes low-level action visible.

Excite

Amount: 0.00–1.00. The current UI offers Female / Male profile buttons. Treat them as plug-in profile choices, not mandatory speaker labels.

3. Signal strategy

Do not switch on all six stages just because they are available

Dialogue Processor is useful because several common speech problems live in one compact insert, but that convenience can tempt you to over-process. Start by naming the audible defect: rumble, plosive, sibilance, uneven dynamics, low-level spill or a need for tonal excitement.

If a stage does not solve a problem you can hear, leave it off. That keeps the chain easier to diagnose and preserves the natural room, consonants and dynamics of the performance.

Repair first

Rumble, pops and sibilance are narrow defects. Fix only what is present before asking compressor/expander stages to shape the overall performance.

Dynamics second

Once the source is clean enough, use compact dynamics control only if the dialogue still needs it.

Excite last

Excitement is tone shaping, not restoration. Do not use it to hide rumble, pops or harsh sibilance.

A/B

Use the plug-in bypass and individual stage switches. Level-matched comparison is more useful than staring at knob positions.

4. Practical workflow

A conservative order for dialogue work

Fix source level

Choose the right mic/channel and bring extreme clip-level differences into a sensible range before the insert.

Enable only the repair you hear

Turn on De-Rumble, De-Pop or De-Ess one at a time and verify that each stage solves a real defect.

Shape dynamics if needed

Add Compressor and/or Expander only after the source is stable enough to judge their effect.

04

Finish, bypass, listen

Use Excite cautiously, compare the entire insert on/off and check the result inside the full mix.
