EQ and Dynamics in Fairlight

How Fairlight's six-band parametric EQ, expander/gate, compressor and limiter fit into a practical mix. The emphasis here is on choosing the processor by the problem you hear — not memorizing one 'perfect voice' preset.

Six bands let you shape tonal balance on a track

Track EQ

Blackmagic describes the track EQ as a six-band parametric equalizer with a graphical display. The goal is not to memorize one voice preset, but to identify which tonal range actually needs adjustment.

1. Equalization

EQ changes tonal balance, not the overall performance

Blackmagic documents a real-time six-band parametric EQ on every Fairlight mixer channel. It gives you a graphical curve and controls for equalizing or filtering different tonal ranges. The important distinction is that EQ changes the balance of frequencies; it is not a substitute for level correction or dynamics control.

Use EQ after you can describe the tonal problem in words: too much low-frequency rumble, excessive boxiness, a harsh range, insufficient presence, or a recording that does not match the rest of the scene. If you cannot hear the problem clearly, moving six bands at once usually makes the decision harder.

Frequency

Choose which tonal area a band affects. The exact frequency depends on the recording; avoid copying numbers blindly from another voice.

Gain

Boosts or attenuates the selected area. Large boosts can exaggerate noise and microphone problems, so compare before and after.

Q / bandwidth

Controls how narrow or broad the adjustment is. Narrow moves are useful for targeted tonal problems; broad moves change the character more generally.

Filter shape

Parametric EQ bands can serve different tonal/filtering jobs. Judge the curve together with what you hear rather than treating the graph as the goal.

Use when the same tonal character should apply consistently to everything flowing through that mixer channel.

2. Dynamics

Dynamics controls how level changes over time

Blackmagic's current Fairlight documentation describes the Dynamics window as a combination of expander/gate, compressor and limiter processing. These three sections are related, but they do different jobs and should not all be enabled simply because they are available.

For dialogue, dynamics is usually about making the performance sit more predictably in the mix without destroying its natural movement. For music and effects, the same processors can be used for very different creative or technical reasons.

Expander / Gate

Reduce or close low-level signal below the chosen behavior threshold.

Compressor

Control excessive dynamic range by reducing louder parts according to its settings.

Limiter

Keep peaks from exceeding the maximum level you set for the processor.

3. Choose the processor

Start from the symptom, not from the name of the tool

4. Practical order

A useful sequence for dialogue without turning it into a rigid recipe

Fix the source first

Correct channel mapping, clip level and obvious repair problems before tonal shaping.

Use EQ for tone

Make the minimum tonal move that solves the problem you can hear.

Use dynamics for movement

Control dynamic range only as much as the mix requires.

Recheck in context

Listen with music and SFX, compare bypass, and make sure words still sound natural.

5. Common mistakes

Most EQ and dynamics problems come from solving the wrong problem

A compressor cannot repair a bad microphone channel, EQ cannot remove room noise, and a limiter cannot replace proper gain staging. Fairlight gives you several control layers, so use the simplest one that matches the actual issue.

Boosting everything

If several bands all need large boosts, reassess the source, monitoring and the actual problem before continuing.

Compressing before balancing

Huge clip-to-clip level differences are often easier to correct before the compressor has to react to them.

Gate chopping speech

Aggressive gating can remove quiet syllables, breaths and natural word endings.

Limiter as a volume knob

A limiter is peak control, not a substitute for a well-balanced mix.
