A dedicated guide to the current six-band Fairlight Equalizer: what each control layer does, how Track EQ differs from Clip EQ, how to read the graph, and how to make tonal decisions without copying a generic voice preset.
Think in jobs, not magic frequencies
The illustration shows roles, not recommended boosts. In the real Resolve 21 panel, bands 2–5 expose Frequency, Gain and Q while the edge filters expose frequency and selectable slope values.
1. Interface anatomy
Six bands, but not six identical jobs
Bands 1 and 6
The live Resolve 21 UI presents the edge bands as filtering bands with frequency plus selectable 6/12/18/24 slope values. Use them to remove material outside the useful tonal range, not to make a voice 'better' by default.
Bands 2–5
The four middle bands expose Frequency, Gain and Q. That is the core parametric-EQ workflow: choose an area, decide whether to cut or boost it, then choose how broad the move should be.
Q Factor
Higher Q narrows the affected range; lower Q broadens it. A narrow correction can target a resonance, while a broad move changes overall tonal character more gently.
Response graph
The graph is feedback, not the goal. A visually elegant curve can still sound wrong; make the smallest move that solves the audible problem and compare bypass often.
2. Track EQ vs Clip EQ
Choose the scope before shaping the tone
Blackmagic documents a six-band parametric EQ on every Fairlight mixer channel. Resolve 21 also upgrades Clip EQ to six bands so it matches the mixer Track EQ more closely.
Use Clip EQ when one take, one microphone angle or one imported sound needs a local correction. Use Track EQ when the same tonal treatment should follow everything routed through that channel. Resolve 21 also allows EQ settings to be copied between Clip, Track and the EQ plug-in.
Clip EQ
Local correction. Useful when the rest of the track already sounds right and only one clip needs help.
Track EQ
Consistent channel processing. Useful for one dialogue mic, a music stem or any track with a stable tonal role.
Copy / paste in Resolve 21
Blackmagic explicitly added the ability to copy EQ settings between Clip, Track and EQ plug-in contexts.
Do not chase presets
Frequency problems depend on source, microphone, room, actor and context. A preset can be a starting point, never a diagnosis.
3. Practical workflow
Describe the problem before touching a band
Listen in context
Solo can help locate a problem, but final EQ choices must work with picture, dialogue, music and SFX.
Find the area
Sweep only when necessary, then stop once the offending or missing tonal area becomes clear.
Make the smallest move
Prefer a controlled correction over several large boosts that create a new tonal problem.
Bypass and level-check
Compare processed and unprocessed sound at comparable loudness so louder does not masquerade as better.
4. Common mistakes
EQ can only solve tonal problems
A frequency curve cannot repair a wrong microphone channel, remove unstable location noise or replace level automation. Use EQ only when the problem is actually tonal.
Huge boosts
Large boosts can reveal noise, harshness and microphone artifacts. Recheck the source before compensating aggressively.
Too many narrow cuts
Not every visual bump is a resonance. Over-notching can make speech hollow and unstable across different words.
EQ before repair
If hum or steady noise is the real problem, targeted repair can be cleaner than trying to carve it out with broad EQ moves.
Judging by graph only
The curve is not a score. Close your eyes, bypass, and decide whether the mix actually improved.
