Compressor in Fairlight

Fairlight places real-time dynamics on every mixer channel. The Dynamics window contains an expander/gate, compressor and limiter. This guide focuses on the compressor as a dynamic-range tool: when it is useful for dialogue, what it should not be asked to fix, and how to judge the result by listening rather than copying a universal voice preset.

1. What compression is for

Control movement, not repair the recording

Blackmagic's current Fairlight documentation confirms a dedicated compressor in the Dynamics window on every track. In practical terms, a compressor is useful when the performance has more dynamic movement than the mix can comfortably accommodate.

It is not a substitute for selecting the correct microphone channel, fixing clipping, removing hum, reducing room noise or correcting harsh sibilance. Those problems belong to other stages of the dialogue chain.

2. Read the Dynamics window correctly

Expander/gate, compressor and limiter are related — not interchangeable

Expander / Gate

Use when low-level material needs reduction or separation. Aggressive gating on dialogue can cut breaths, word tails and room continuity.

Compressor

Use when louder parts need controlled reduction so the performance sits more consistently. The goal is usually intelligibility and stability, not eliminating all movement.

Limiter

Treat it as a separate peak-control stage. Do not use a limiter to compensate for bad gain staging or to force dialogue loudness by itself.

3. Dialogue workflow

Compress only after the source is clean enough to judge dynamics

A dialogue track with large clip-to-clip mismatches can make the compressor react to editing problems instead of performance dynamics. Balance obvious outliers first, then decide whether Dialogue Leveler, compression or manual automation is actually the smallest correct tool.

There is no single correct order for every production. A useful rule is to diagnose the audible problem at each stage and avoid stacking processors whose jobs overlap without a reason.

4. What to listen for

Bad compression announces itself in the spaces between words

Pumping

If room tone or music seems to breathe with every phrase, the dynamics are calling attention to themselves.

Raised noise floor

Heavy gain recovery can make background noise more obvious between phrases even when the voice itself sounds controlled.

Lost attacks

Consonants and word attacks can lose clarity when transient movement is over-controlled. Listen to articulation, not only meters.

Flat performance

Dialogue needs intentional movement. A whisper and a shout carrying exactly the same weight can damage the dramatic perspective.

Dialogue Leveler or compressor?

Start from the symptom, not the processor

If the distracting problem is dialogue level inconsistency across speakers or microphone perspective, review Dialogue Leveler first. If the problem is dynamic-range control inside an otherwise coherent performance, compression may be the better layer.
