Vocal Channel in Fairlight

A current-interface guide to Fairlight's compact Vocal Channel plug-in: High Pass, three-band Equalizer and Compressor in one insert, with response graphs and gain-reduction monitoring.

1. Interface anatomy

Three familiar jobs inside one fast channel strip

High Pass

The current UI exposes a Frequency control from 20 to 300 Hz. Its job is to remove low-frequency content below the useful range when that content is actually unwanted — not to thin every voice by default.

Equalizer

Three tonal bands — Low, Mid and Hi — each expose a frequency target and gain. The UI also shows selectable filter-shape buttons for the bands, so use the shape that matches the tonal task instead of forcing every move into the same curve.

Compressor

The compact compressor exposes Threshold, Ratio, Reaction and makeup Gain plus a Gain Reduction meter. It is designed for fast channel control; the dedicated Compressor page remains the better place for a deeper dynamics workflow.

2. Live parameter map

These ranges come from the live plug-in screenshot. The displayed example values are not presets and should not be copied blindly.

High Pass

Frequency: 20–300 Hz. The section has its own enable switch.

Low EQ

Low Freq: 35–330 Hz. Low Gain: −18 to +18 dB. Selectable filter-shape buttons are visible above the control pair.

Mid EQ

Mid Freq: 250 Hz–8.2 kHz. Mid Gain: −16 to +16 dB. The current UI offers alternate mid-band shapes.

Hi EQ

Hi Freq: 5–17 kHz. Hi Gain: −18 to +18 dB. Selectable shape buttons mirror the compact channel-strip approach.

Compressor · Threshold

Threshold: −40 to 0 dB. This determines the level region where compression begins to act.

Compressor · Ratio

Ratio: 1.1–7.0. Higher values increase the amount of level control above the threshold region.

Reaction

Continuous Fast ↔ Slow reaction control. Use it by listening to word attacks, consonants and overall movement rather than chasing one universal value.

Gain + Reduction

Makeup Gain: 0–20 dB. A dedicated Gain Reduction meter shows how deeply the compressor is acting.

3. Graphs and meters

The UI tells you what the channel is doing

The left graph visualizes the combined tonal response of the Vocal Channel EQ section. The right graph compares the linear input/output relationship with the active compression transfer curve, making threshold and ratio easier to understand visually.

The Gain Reduction meter is the fastest reality check: if the compressor is reducing continuously or much harder than intended, solve the level problem before assuming more compression is the answer.

Use it to see the combined direction of your tonal moves, but judge the result by ear in context.

The bend away from the straight reference line shows how level growth is being reduced above the compression region.

Gain Reduction

Watch how much the compressor is actually working instead of relying only on the Threshold and Ratio numbers.

Output

Final output metering helps you catch level changes after the combined channel processing.

4. Practical workflow

Use Vocal Channel when speed and a compact chain matter

Start with the source

Choose the correct mic/channel and balance obvious clip-level mismatches before the plug-in.

High-pass only what is unwanted

Move the filter until rumble or unusable low end is controlled without thinning the voice.

Shape tone with a few moves

Use Low, Mid and Hi bands for clear tonal goals instead of creating a complicated curve inside a compact strip.

Compress only as needed

Set Threshold/Ratio/Reaction while watching Gain Reduction, then compare bypass at similar loudness.

5. Vocal Channel vs separate processors

Compact does not mean universally better

Vocal Channel is excellent when one insert can solve basic filtering, tonal shaping and dynamic control. Use the dedicated Equalizer or Compressor when you need deeper control, and use Dialogue Processor or restoration tools when the real problem is rumble, pops, sibilance or noise rather than tone and dynamics.
