Channel Mapping in DaVinci Resolve Fairlight

Before EQ, dynamics or restoration, make sure Resolve is reading the correct channels. This guide separates three things that users often mix together: Clip Attributes, source channels and track type.

1. Why it matters

The wrong channel map can make every later decision look wrong

If Resolve reads the wrong microphone, folds stereo unexpectedly or sends a multichannel source to the wrong destination, all later EQ, dialogue processing and loudness work becomes less reliable.

Clip first

Clip Attributes define how the embedded channels inside the source file are interpreted.

Track second

Track type defines the channel layout of the Fairlight track that will receive or play the clip.

Inspector third

The Inspector changes level, pan, EQ and clip processing after the clip already exists on the timeline.

Typical real case

A camera file contains four embedded channels. You may need only one lavalier mic, not the whole stereo or all four channels together.

2. Open the dialog

Clip Attributes is the place to remap the source

Right-click the audio clip

Open the clip context menu from the timeline or Media Pool and choose Clip Attributes.

Switch to the Audio tab

The Audio tab shows the format of each clip track and the exact embedded source channel feeding it.

Confirm before processing

It is much safer to confirm the channel architecture before adding Dialogue Leveler, De-Esser, EQ or restoration tools.

3. Format and source

Resolve separates the clip format from the embedded source channel

These two controls answer different questions: what kind of clip track do you want, and which physical source channel should feed it?

Stereo example

A standard stereo mapping assigns Embedded Channel 1 to Left and Embedded Channel 2 to Right.

Mono example

When only one microphone is useful, switch the clip format to Mono and point it to the specific embedded channel you need.

Adaptive when necessary

Adaptive is useful for non-standard or delivery-driven layouts, but most editing tasks are solved by clear Mono or Stereo decisions.

4. Track type

Change Track Type To sets the destination layout of the Fairlight track

Clip Attributes and track type are related, but they are not the same control. The clip describes the source; the track describes the channel structure of the place where the clip will live in the timeline.

Mono tracks

Useful for dialogue, single microphones and many voice-over situations where one channel per track is clearer.

Stereo and beyond

Stereo, 3.0, 4.0, 5.x, 7.x and Adaptive formats are available directly from the current Fairlight track menu.

5. Inspector vs Clip Attributes

The Inspector changes the selected clip after the channel structure is already decided

Volume, pan, AI Voice Isolation, AI Dialogue Leveler, AI Music Remixer, pitch and clip EQ belong to clip processing. They do not replace the source-mapping job of Clip Attributes.

Clip Attributes answers “what is this source?”

Use it when Resolve is reading the wrong embedded channel or when the clip needs to become Mono, Stereo or another channel layout.

Inspector answers “how should this chosen clip behave?”

Use it for level, pan, tonal shaping and AI tools once the correct source channels are already in place.

6. Practical rules

Three habits prevent most channel-mapping mistakes

Inspect before processing

Open Clip Attributes before you start dialogue repair. A wrong source channel can make a plugin look worse than it really is.

Match clip intent and track intent

A clip may need to be Mono even when the original file contains several channels. The track should then be chosen for the editing or delivery purpose.

Be careful with stereo on mono

If a stereo source lands on a mono track without a deliberate remap, you may not hear the result you expect. Check the mapping, then continue.
