Clip Gain, Fades and Waveform Editing in Fairlight
This stage stays at clip level: how to shape the start and end of a clip, build crossfades, adjust clip volume directly on the waveform, normalize material and understand when the Inspector is still the right tool.
1. Clip-level mindset
Fix the specific clip before you reach for broader processing
A lot of Fairlight work becomes simpler when obvious local problems are corrected at clip level first. A single rough entry, a clipped exit, a weak phrase or a mismatched edit point often do not need track-wide processing at all.
Precise and local
Clip edits solve one place in the timeline without changing the whole track or bus.
Visible on the waveform
Fairlight exposes fades, overlap and clip-volume changes directly on the clip, which makes quick decisions easier.
2. Edge fades
Fade handles are the fastest way to soften clip entries and exits
Grab the upper corner
Fairlight exposes fade handles directly on the clip edge. Dragging them creates a quick fade without opening another tool.
Use short fades for edit hygiene
A very short fade often removes clicks and unnaturally hard entrances or exits in dialogue and effects.
Make longer fades when perspective changes
Longer fades help when a phrase has to emerge gently or a background element should dissolve rather than stop abruptly.
3. Crossfades
A crossfade joins two clips more naturally than a hard cut
When two clips meet on the same track, a crossfade can smooth room-tone differences, hide a tiny mismatch and stop the edit from sounding mechanical.
Overlap matters
Crossfades need overlapping material or a generated overlap area that lets the first clip fade out while the second fades in.
Listen for ambience
The goal is not simply a prettier shape. The goal is a more believable transition in the sound field.
4. Clip gain
You can adjust clip volume directly on the waveform
Fairlight does not force every gain decision through a separate inspector panel. The clip itself can expose a volume line, making fast corrections possible without leaving the timeline.
Good for obvious mismatches
If one phrase is simply too quiet or too loud, clip gain is often a cleaner first correction than any automatic processor.
Still listen in context
A numerical gain move only matters if it improves the transition against the surrounding clips, ambience and music.
5. Normalize
Normalize Audio Levels is for bringing a clip to a chosen target quickly
Normalization is useful when a clip clearly arrives at the wrong level and you need a repeatable target before you continue editing or balancing.
Good for technical correction
Normalization is effective when the clip is globally too low or too high, and the problem is not its internal dynamics.
Not a substitute for mixing
Normalizing a clip does not remove the need to balance it against neighbouring speech, music or effects.
Check after applying
A target can be mathematically correct but still musically or editorially wrong in context. Always listen again.
6. Inspector
The Inspector is still useful, but it solves a different part of the problem
Timeline editing and Inspector editing are complementary. Fades, crossfades and clip gain often start on the timeline; broader clip treatment such as pan, pitch or clip EQ often continues in the Inspector.
Timeline first
Use the clip itself for fast local edits you can read visually on the waveform.
Inspector second
Use the Inspector when you need parameter control beyond edge fades and direct gain moves.
