RESOLVE FX · TEMPORAL RESTORATION

Deflicker.

Repair the time axis.

Deflicker is a temporal restoration tool, not a brightness smoother. Choose the right flicker model, verify what the detector calls flicker, separate that instability from real motion, localize the repair when needed, then restore fine detail and judge the result in playback.

In the lab, deliberately choose the wrong preset, then switch Detected Flicker on. Compare it with Advanced and move Motion Threshold while the subject crosses the frame. On the Screen scene, Limit Analysis Area should protect the rest of the picture rather than act like a reference sample.

01WHAT DEFLICKER ACTUALLY SOLVES

The defect lives between frames.

Deflicker targets rapid temporal instability in lightness/color while trying to preserve genuine motion. That changes the whole tuning strategy: a still frame can show the UI, but not certify the repair.

Deflicker is temporal repair, not a local brightness key.

The effect looks for rapid unstable lightness changes across adjacent frames and tries to separate them from genuine motion. A single still cannot validate the result; diagnostic output and playback are required.

Start with a preset; use Advanced only when the preset fails.

Timelapse and Fluoro Light cover two common flicker classes. Advanced Controls is useful when you need to tune the temporal window, motion estimation and thresholds manually. It adds freedom, but also increases the risk of confusing real motion with flicker.

Read the detector before Detail Restore and Blend.

Detected Flicker and Magnified Flicker reveal where the correction is actually aimed. If the diagnostic map reacts to hair, fabric or subject motion instead of unwanted light instability, Detail to Restore and Global Blend only hide the cause.

Blackmagic describes this control as a way to restrict deflickering to a specific region. Use it when only part of the frame flickers or another area is being over-smoothed. Do not choose a “calm area” expecting it to become a global reference sample.

02THE ACTUAL PANEL

Five layers, not one strength slider.

Six native Resolve captures anchor the visible interface: mode selection, conditional temporal controls, speed/localization, detail protection, diagnostic Output and Global Blend.

01 · MODE

Choose the flicker class first.

Deflicker Settings

Timelapse and Fluoro Light are task presets. Advanced Controls reveals the manual Isolate Flicker / Temporal NR logic.

CheckTry the relevant presets before Advanced. Use Advanced for a specific failure mode, not simply because it exposes more controls.

02 · ADVANCED TEMPORAL

Separate flicker from motion.

Frames Either Side

Number of neighboring frames on either side of the current frame used for temporal analysis. More is not automatically better; a wider window can make moving shots harder to match.

CheckIncrease only when the shorter temporal window is insufficient, then re-check moving edges in playback.

Mo.Est. Type

Faster, Better or None choose the motion-analysis strategy. Better is more accurate and expensive, but high-detail footage can sometimes behave better with Faster; None is only sensible when the scene has no motion.

CheckA/B Faster and Better with the other settings held constant. The labels do not guarantee a visually better result.

Motion Range

Small / Medium / Large describe the expected speed range of movement for motion analysis.

CheckUse the smallest range that reliably covers real motion; an unnecessarily broad range increases the space for bad matches.

Gang Luma Chroma

Links Luma Threshold and Chroma Threshold for joint adjustment. Ungang them when brightness and color flicker need different thresholds.

CheckDo not separate Luma/Chroma without a reason; diagnose which component is actually failing first.

Luma Threshold

Threshold for luma changes. Documentation states that 0 deflickers nothing and 100 applies deflickering to everything; it is not a simple “flicker protection” scale.

CheckTune against Detected/Magnified Flicker rather than a single final still.

Chroma Threshold

The corresponding threshold for chroma changes. Useful when color pulsing behaves differently from luma.

CheckWhen tuned separately, make sure chroma correction is not reacting to normal motion of saturated objects.

Motion Threshold

Threshold above which change is treated as motion rather than flicker. It protects genuinely moving regions from temporal correction.

CheckIf the detector lights up motion boundaries, fix this layer before touching Detail Restore or Blend.

03 · SPEED / REGION

Speed the analysis and localize the repair.

Reduced-Detail Motion

Reduces motion-analysis detail and usually improves processing speed. On fine-detail footage it can smooth texture too aggressively.

CheckDisable and compare hair, foliage, fabric, grain and thin edges.

Limit Analysis Area

Reveals a box that restricts deflickering to a specific image region. It does not select a reference sample for the whole frame.

CheckBox the actual flickering screen, light or region and verify that clean neighboring areas are no longer being changed.

04 · DETAIL RESTORE

Restore only the texture that was lost.

Detail to Restore

Isolates grain, fine detail and sharp edges that should not be affected by deflicker and preserves them over the corrected result.

CheckRaise it only after the detector map is clean. Too much can visually reintroduce source instability together with texture.

Show Detail Restored

Diagnostic view of the edges/detail that Detail to Restore is about to preserve.

CheckConfirm the view contains texture/edges rather than broad flickering regions.

05 · OUTPUT / MIX

Diagnostics first, final mix last.

Output

Deflickered Result is the final repair; Detected Flicker shows detected instability; Magnified Flicker exaggerates the diagnostic map so subtle flicker is easier to read.

CheckDiagnostic modes are image output views. Return to Deflickered Result before delivery.

Global Blend

Final mix between the input and the already-computed Deflicker result. It does not change detector, motion classification or detail restore.

CheckIf Blend must be reduced heavily to make the result acceptable, return to the upstream settings.

Two controls are easy to misread. Luma/Chroma Threshold are documented so that 0 deflickers nothing and 100 applies deflickering to everything. Limit Analysis Area restricts the region being deflickered; it is not a calm reference box for estimating the full frame.

03READ OUTPUT BEFORE TRUSTING THE RESULT

A useful detector follows instability, not motion.

Detected Flicker can be subtle; Magnified Flicker deliberately exaggerates the diagnostic view. Use them to separate three states before restoring detail or touching Blend.

01 / MISSED FLICKER

The pulse is visible, the detector is quiet

The preset or thresholds are not admitting enough of the unstable change. In Advanced, remember that raising Luma/Chroma Threshold admits more deflickering, not less.

Re-check the preset, then thresholds in Magnified Flicker.

02 / USEFUL DETECTION

The unstable region reads; motion stays quiet

Exposure/light pulsing appears in the diagnostic view while faces, hair, moving edges and stable background regions remain comparatively quiet. This is the state in which Detail to Restore becomes meaningful.

Return to Deflickered Result and inspect playback.

03 / MOTION LEAK

Moving structure lights up

Motion classification is failing. A wide Frames Either Side window, unsuitable estimation mode/range or Motion Threshold can push real motion into the repair.

Fix Advanced motion logic before hiding the symptom with detail restore or Blend.

Identify the temporal failure first

Decide whether the shot behaves like irregular exposure pulsing, periodic artificial-light flicker, or a case that genuinely needs Advanced Controls.

Teaching workflow, not a literal Resolve node graph. The order matters: classify and validate detection before restoring detail or hiding a bad detector with Global Blend.

05BUILD IT IN RESOLVE

Four temporal failures. Four different boundaries.

Use your own moving footage. These are diagnostic workflows rather than universal values; cadence, shutter, motion complexity, source texture and scan characteristics all affect the correct settings.

01

Timelapse exposure breathing

Remove frame-to-frame brightness jumps while preserving texture.

PrepareA clip with visible exposure pulsing and moderate motion.

  1. 01

Start with Timelapse and immediately inspect Detected Flicker.

  2. 02

If the preset is stable, do not move to Advanced without a reason.

  3. 03

If grain/fine texture is reduced, use Detail to Restore after detector QC.

  4. 04

Compare bypass in real-time playback across one continuous shot.

Acceptance check

Brightness pulsing disappears without swimming moving edges or texture.

02

Fluorescent / LED pulsing

Stabilize periodic artificial-light flicker.

PrepareAn interior or screen with regular light-frequency/shutter pulsing.

  1. 01

Try Fluoro Light before Advanced Controls.

  2. 02

Use Magnified Flicker to confirm the detector is targeting the pulsing region.

  3. 03

If only part of the frame flickers, enable Limit Analysis Area around that region.

  4. 04

Return to Deflickered Result and inspect several flicker cycles in playback.

Acceptance check

Periodic pulsing is reduced without unnecessary smoothing of neighboring areas.

03

Complex motion in Advanced

Separate genuine motion from flicker when a preset misclassifies it.

PrepareA shot with hair, fabric, foliage, handheld motion or fast subject movement.

  1. 01

Switch to Advanced Controls and start with a short Frames Either Side window.

  2. 02

    A/B Faster/Better with identical thresholds.

  3. 03

Tune Motion Range and Motion Threshold against diagnostic output.

  4. 04

Restore fine detail only after motion classification is clean.

Acceptance check

Flicker is reduced without turning motion boundaries into smearing or ghosting.

04

Flickering screen inside a stable frame

Repair only the local problem without touching the rest of the image.

PrepareA shot with a monitor/sign/light where flicker is limited to one region.

  1. 01

Enable Limit Analysis Area and place the box over the flickering object.

  2. 02

Choose the appropriate preset or tune Advanced within that region.

  3. 03

Check neighboring clean areas with bypass; they should remain unchanged.

  4. 04

Finally inspect the object’s hard edges and Global Blend.

Acceptance check

The repair stays local and the stable part of the frame remains visually unchanged.

06CHOOSE THE TEMPORAL FAILURE, THEN THE TOOL

Not every “digital” defect is flicker.

Stable banding, random noise and deliberately added flicker can look related at a glance but live in different causal layers. Pick the tool by failure type.

07DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE, NOT THE MIX

Motion leak, softness and local flicker need different fixes.

Do not reach for Global Blend first. The symptom usually points to a specific upstream layer: temporal window, motion analysis, working region or detail restoration.

01The detector lights up the moving subject instead of flicker.

Likely cause: Incorrect motion classification: an overly wide temporal window, unsuitable Mo.Est. Type/Range or Motion Threshold.
Fix: Shorten Frames Either Side, A/B Faster/Better and tune motion controls against Magnified Flicker.

02Fine detail has become too smooth.

Likely cause: Reduced-Detail Motion or the temporal correction itself is too aggressive for a texture-heavy shot.
Fix: Disable Reduced-Detail Motion, stabilize the detector first, then raise Detail to Restore carefully.

03Only one screen flickers, but the whole frame changes.

Likely cause: Deflicker is operating globally even though the defect is local.
Fix: Enable Limit Analysis Area and box only the problem region.

04Flicker partially returns after Detail to Restore.

Likely cause: The restore pass is bringing back temporal instability together with texture.
Fix: Enable Show Detail Restored and reduce Detail to Restore until edges/grain return without the pulsing.

05The Viewer looks fine, but a cut produces a strange transition.

Likely cause: Temporal analysis is reaching across a shot boundary or the effect is applied in a context with unintended neighboring frames.
Fix: Check hard-cut boundaries and keep Deflicker evaluation/application within one continuous shot.

08BEFORE DELIVERY

Approve Deflicker across time, not at one frame.

The final QC is a continuous-shot playback test. Motion boundaries, grain/fine detail and cut edges can all reveal failures that a still hides.

09FAQ

Practical Deflicker questions.

When is Timelapse better than Fluoro Light?

When the problem looks like irregular frame-to-frame exposure instability. Fluoro Light is aimed at more periodic pulsing from artificial lighting.

Are Advanced Controls always higher quality than a preset?

No. Advanced simply exposes the manual temporal logic. If a preset already solves the shot cleanly, Advanced adds no automatic quality advantage and introduces more ways to mis-tune the effect.

Why can Better look worse than Faster?

Blackmagic notes that Better tries harder to match fine detail; on very detailed footage that can sometimes hurt, while Faster may produce a cleaner motion classification.

Is Limit Analysis Area a reference sample?

No. The box limits the region to which deflickering is applied. It is especially useful for locally flickering screens/lights or for protecting neighboring areas from unnecessary smoothing.

Can I approve the result from a single frame?

No. Flicker and motion-compensation errors are temporal by definition. Review continuous playback, bypass and diagnostic outputs.

The page separates current captured UI evidence from documented behavior and from the animated teaching model. Six native Resolve 21 captures anchor the visible labels and sections. Blackmagic documentation anchors the Deflicker behavior and important edge cases. The hero animation is intentionally synthetic and does not reproduce internal motion vectors, temporal sampling, masks or numeric parameter mapping.

Resolve 21 is the current product context for this page. The detailed Deflicker control reference originated in earlier official Blackmagic documentation, while the same control family is independently anchored here by Resolve 21 UI captures.
