RESOLVE 21 · SELECTIVE AI SHARPENING
AI UltraSharpen.
One control.
The hard part is knowing when to stop.
AI UltraSharpen is Blackmagic’s selective AI sharpening tool for moving images. It is aimed at slightly soft or mildly out-of-focus footage and low-resolution/upscaled sources. The interface is intentionally minimal — Sharpen Amount is the only effect-specific control — so the real craft is source diagnosis, final-scale viewing, temporal QC, and refusing to turn missing detail into artificial crispness.
Selective, not blanket
Sharpen Amount
100% · playback · encode
Use the lab to compare a slight focus miss, an upscaled source, and a motion stress case. Push Amount past the useful zone on purpose: the goal is to see why “more sharpness” is not the same thing as more trustworthy detail. The proxy is educational and does not imitate Blackmagic AI pixels.

Selective rescue is useful precisely because it is not a blanket edge boost.
Blackmagic’s documented model is simple: AI decides where sharpening is useful, Sharpen Amount sets the strength, and the operator decides whether the result remains believable over time.
Selective AI instead of blanket sharpening
Blackmagic describes UltraSharpen as an AI tool that analyzes the image and attempts to sharpen only where it considers that useful instead of applying the same high-frequency boost everywhere. A useful mental model is: the AI first decides where recoverable readability exists, then Sharpen Amount doses the strength of that processing. A naturally soft background can therefore stay calmer than a slightly soft foreground subject.
A rescue tool for slight focus misses, not true refocusing
UltraSharpen works best when source information is still present but reads soft: a small focus miss, soft optics, lost acutance after processing, or an upscale. If detail is physically absent because of heavy defocus, the slider does not turn the shot into a genuinely refocused source. The harder Amount is pushed, the greater the risk of artificial micro-contrast, halos, ringing, and unnatural skin or hair texture.
Upscale establishes size; UltraSharpen restores readability
For low-resolution footage, establish the target output size and scaling method first, then judge UltraSharpen at that scale. Blackmagic specifically positions the tool for improving upscaled video. That does not make sharpening and upscaling the same operation: scaling establishes geometry/resolution, while UltraSharpen attempts to improve perceived detail in the resulting image.
Blackmagic explicitly frames UltraSharpen around moving video images, so a still frame is only the beginning of QC. Hair, foliage, fabric, fine text, and small high-contrast edges must be watched in playback: an Amount that looks stable on a still can produce crawling, shimmer, or nervous digital crispness over time. Approve on a representative clip and a short delivery encode.
02ONE REAL EFFECT-SPECIFIC CONTROL
Do not invent complexity the plug-in does not expose.
The project contains one native Resolve 21 Fusion Inspector capture of AIUltraSharpen. The second view below is an exact crop of that same screenshot. It proves the real parameter name and the captured 0.300000 state without pretending we have a Color Inspector capture that is not present in the archive.
01 · EFFECT-SPECIFIC CONTROL
One slider, but the decision is judged across several image regions.
- Sharpen Amount
The single effect-specific AI UltraSharpen control. It sets the amount of AI sharpening applied to the image. The captured native Inspector shows 0.300000; use that only as a convenient A/B reference point while learning the effect, not as a preset. Increase it only until the intended subject becomes clearly more readable, then stop before the image starts to look visibly “sharpened.”
CheckWatch foreground detail, skin/hair, naturally soft background, noise/grain, and high-contrast edges at the same time. If useful detail improves while the background stays calm, selective behavior is helping. If halos, noise, or crunchiness rise, Amount is already too high for that source.
Blackmagic’s Resolve 21 New Features Guide explicitly calls UltraSharpen “a very simple tool, with only one control.” That simplicity is a design constraint worth preserving in the guide: every extra decision belongs to source preparation, node isolation, viewing scale, playback, or delivery QC — not to imaginary UltraSharpen sliders.
03A REPEATABLE AI-RESCUE PATH
Diagnose → clean → scale → amount → playback → delivery.
The order matters because Sharpen Amount should never become a substitute for fixing noise, choosing the correct upscale, or solving the wrong blur problem.
Diagnose the source problem
Decide whether the shot has slight focus softness, lost acutance after processing, an upscale, or a problem UltraSharpen cannot solve such as severe defocus or motion blur.
This is a teaching decision path, not a published Blackmagic processing graph. It separates source diagnosis, cleanup, output scale, the single Sharpen Amount decision, temporal QC, and delivery QC so a stronger Amount does not become the answer to every problem.

04FOUR REAL RESCUE DECISIONS
A slight focus miss, an upscale, post-denoise softness, and local detail are not the same job.
Use these as diagnostic procedures, not presets. The same Amount can be useful on one source and visibly artificial on another because the source detail/noise balance is different.
A slight focus miss on a face
Recover readability in eyes, hair, and fine facial detail without turning skin and bokeh into crunchy texture.
- 01
Choose several representative frames: a neutral face position, motion, and the hardest hair/skin region.
- 02
Create a bypass reference and start with a restrained Amount; the captured 0.3 can be used as a learning A/B point, not as a ready-made preset.
- 03
Raise Amount only until eyes/hair become readable again. If pores and lip/nose contours become digitally harsh, back off.
- 04
Play several seconds and inspect the bokeh/background: it should not suddenly start boiling with high-frequency detail.
Low-resolution source after an upscale
Add perceived detail after resolution enlargement without confusing image size with genuine information recovery.
- 01
First lock the target resolution and scaling/Super Scale strategy.
- 02
Judge UltraSharpen at the final scale, preferably 100%/1:1 or the actual delivery display size.
- 03
Look for real edges and readable texture, not a false sense of “more detail” caused by amplified noise or compression blocks.
- 04
Make a short encode: the codec can make oversharpening/ringing more obvious than the timeline Viewer.
After noise reduction
Restore controlled acutance after cleanup without bringing residual noise and plastic edges back with it.
- 01
Compare three states: original, denoise only, and denoise + UltraSharpen.
- 02
If denoise destroyed important texture, fix the denoise first; UltraSharpen should not compensate for excessive smoothing.
- 03
Increase Amount until the subject reads again while residual noise is still not becoming its own visible texture.
- 04
Check grain/noise consistency in motion and after the downstream grade.
Local product or logo detail
Enhance only the product/logo without increasing high-frequency energy across the whole frame.
- 01
First find a natural Amount on the object itself.
- 02
Constrain the node with a Power Window/Key/matte if the background should not participate in sharpening.
- 03
If the object moves, track the isolation separately from Sharpen Amount and inspect feathering over motion blur.
- 04
Compare against regular Sharpen if deterministic full-object edge enhancement is more useful than AI selection.
05CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHARPEN TOOL
Choose by selection model and failure mode, not by which name sounds stronger.
AI UltraSharpen is the selective one-control rescue tool. The other Sharpen-family effects expose more deterministic ways to decide which spatial structure or edges should change.
| FX | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Sharpen ↗ | Choose it for predictable multi-scale sharpening with direct Fine / Medium / Large and Chroma control. |
| Sharpen Edges ↗ | Choose it when contours should be selected by an edge detector while flatter regions stay calmer. |
| Soften and Sharpen ↗ | Choose it when spatial texture bands must be softened or enhanced manually in both directions, especially for beauty/texture balancing. |

06DIAGNOSE WHY “MORE SHARP” FAILED
No improvement, halos, noise lift and shimmer are different problems.
Do not solve every symptom with the same slider direction. The most important diagnostic question is whether the source still contains trustworthy detail that the AI can enhance.
01Increasing Amount produces almost no useful improvement+
Likely cause: The source is already sharp enough, or the missing detail is physically absent because of severe defocus.
Fix: Compare bypass at 100% and test another representative frame. Do not keep raising Amount merely because the slider still has room.
02Skin looks crunchy, or halos/ringing appear+
Likely cause: Sharpen Amount is too high for the real detail/noise structure of the shot.
Fix: Reduce Amount until the visible “sharpen look” disappears. If you need more controllable edge behavior, compare against regular Sharpen or Sharpen Edges.
03Noise/grain becomes more visible after UltraSharpen+
Likely cause: AI enhancement is increasing high-frequency structure where the source already contains noise or compression defects.
Fix: Perform cleanup/denoise earlier, without overdoing it, then re-tune the minimum useful Amount.
04The still looks good but playback shows shimmer/crawling+
Likely cause: High-frequency detail changes frame to frame and oversharpening makes that temporal variation visible.
Fix: Reduce Amount and inspect hair/foliage/fabric at real playback speed. Finish with a delivery encode test.
05After upscale the image looks “AI-crispy” rather than genuinely more detailed+
Likely cause: Scaling/reconstruction and UltraSharpen are both generating too much synthetic acutance.
Fix: Approve the upscale by itself first, then add less UltraSharpen. Inspect text, eyelashes, hair, and diagonal edges at 100%.
06The background becomes too harsh even though only the subject needed rescue+
Likely cause: On this shot, selective behavior is not separating regions enough, or full-frame processing is unnecessary.
Fix: Constrain the node with a Power Window/Key/matte or use a more deterministic local sharpen. Do not compensate by pushing Amount harder.
07BEFORE DELIVERY
Approve detail, background, motion and codec — not just one impressive still.
UltraSharpen can look excellent on a hero frame and still fail in hair, foliage, grain, or final compression. The checklist keeps the approval tied to the moving deliverable.
08FAQ
Practical AI UltraSharpen questions.
How many effect-specific controls does AI UltraSharpen have?
One: Sharpen Amount. That is how Blackmagic describes the tool in the Resolve 21 New Features Guide. Common node/OFX host controls do not change that fact: UltraSharpen itself is intentionally minimal.
Does AI UltraSharpen sharpen the whole frame uniformly?
No. Blackmagic emphasizes selective AI behavior: the algorithm attempts to increase sharpness where it considers it useful instead of applying a blanket sharpen over the whole image.
Can it rescue a heavily defocused shot?
Do not rely on it for that. The official positioning is slight softness/focus errors. The less real information remains, the faster additional Amount turns into artificial edge enhancement.
Why should 0.3 not be treated as a recommended value?
0.300000 is simply the value visible in the native screenshot stored in this project. It is useful as a learning A/B reference point, but the correct Amount depends on the source, framing, noise, scale, and delivery.
When is regular Sharpen a better choice?
When you need deterministic Fine/Medium/Large control, separate Chroma handling, or predictable manual tuning rather than AI selection.
What order should Denoise and UltraSharpen use?
Usually unwanted noise/artifacts are handled first, then restrained readability is restored. But denoise should not be excessive: UltraSharpen should not be used to compensate for destroyed texture.
Does the effect need motion QC?
Yes. Blackmagic positions UltraSharpen for moving images. Hair, foliage, fabric, and fine edges can look acceptable on a still while shimmer/crawling only becomes obvious in playback and after compression.
