RESOLVE FX · EDGE-SELECTIVE SHARPENING
Sharpen Edges.
Build the edge matte first.
Sharpen only what survives it.
Resolve FX Sharpen Edges separates selection from enhancement. Edge Detection Controls decide which structural boundaries enter the matte; only then do Sharpen Amount and Sharpen Radius shape those selected contours. That makes the effect useful when flat regions and random texture should stay calmer than the edges that define the subject.

Toggle Display Edges in the lab and deliberately compare Portrait, High ISO and Graphics. Lower Threshold on noisy footage to make the matte fail, then clean it with Pre Denoise before changing Amount. The proxy is designed to teach cause and effect, not to imitate Blackmagic pixels.

Noise leaking into matte: 39%
Halo risk: 11%
Selection selectivity: 18%
These numbers are synthetic teaching indicators, not Resolve measurements.
Independent teaching simulation, not Blackmagic rendering and not a verified mapping of Resolve detector or sharpening transfer functions. It illustrates only the causal split between edge selection, matte weighting, sharpening width/strength and final integration. Use the four native screenshots below for the actual UI.

Selection and sharpening are two different stages.
The useful mental model is detector → edge matte → edge weighting → sharpening → final mix. Most artifacts become easier to diagnose once those stages are not collapsed into one idea of “more sharpness.”
Sharpen Edges is mask-driven sharpening
Unlike the regular Sharpen effect, this FX does not need to enhance texture across the whole frame. It first builds an internal edge matte from contrast boundaries, then applies sharpening only where that matte permits. Result quality therefore depends more on detector cleanliness than on maximum Amount.
Display Edges turns guessing into diagnosis
A final sharpened image does not clearly explain why noise, hair, pores, or compression blocks became too crisp. Display Edges exposes the intermediate matte directly. If unwanted structure is already bright in the matte, solve it with Pre Denoise and Edge Detect Thr before touching Amount.
Radius and Edge Blur solve different problems
Sharpen Radius changes the width of local-contrast enhancement around a selected boundary; Edge Blur changes the softness and spread of the edge matte through which that enhancement is applied. Both can visually broaden treatment, but for different reasons: one shapes sharpening, the other shapes selection.
Fit-to-view can hide fine halos and a noisy matte. Inspect the edge matte and result at 100%, then play the shot and check a short delivery encode. Edge-selective sharpening may look clean on one frame yet shimmer unpleasantly on noise, hair detail, or compression edges in motion.
02REAL RESOLVE 21 CONTROLS
Tune the detector before you judge the sharpen.
The four native captures cover the full panel, main sharpening controls, Edge Detection Controls and Global Blend. Values visible in screenshots are evidence of one interface state, not universal settings.
02 · EDGE DETECTION
First decide what counts as an edge.
- Display Edges
A diagnostic switch that shows the internal grayscale edge matte. This is the primary detector-tuning view: bright regions receive more weight while dark regions should stay outside sharpening.
CheckLook for noisy snow, pores, grain, and codec blocks that should not become edges.
- Pre Denoise
Smooths the analysis image before edge detection. It is not the final denoiser for the shot; it prevents the detector from treating random fine structure as a real contour.
CheckToo much Pre Denoise can remove eyelashes, hair strands, and fine graphics from the matte.
- Edge Detect Thr
Detector sensitivity threshold. A lower threshold admits weaker contrast transitions; a higher threshold leaves only stronger boundaries. It changes matte membership, not the strength of already-selected edges.
CheckIf a weak desired edge is absent from Display Edges, Mask Strength cannot recover it; adjust the threshold first.
03 · MATTE WEIGHT
Control the weight and softness of detected boundaries.
- Edge Mask Strength
Strengthens or weakens the already detected edge matte. Unlike Edge Detect Thr, this control does not discover new edges; it changes the weight of existing ones.
CheckIf the matte is correct but the effect feels weak, a moderate Strength increase can be cleaner than a huge Amount jump.
- Edge Blur
Softens the edge matte and broadens the transition between selected boundaries and neighboring pixels. This can tame a ragged hard matte, but excessive blur makes treatment less selective.
CheckCheck whether sharpening starts leaking into flat areas next to the contour.
04 · FINAL MIX
Reduce a correct effect; do not hide a wrong one.
- Global Blend
Final master mix between the calculated Sharpen Edges result and the incoming node image. Use it after the matte, Amount, and Radius are correct to integrate the effect into the grade.
CheckIf Blend must be reduced aggressively, find the root problem in the detector, Radius, or Amount.
The screenshot state shows Amount 2.000, Radius 0.050, Edge Detect Thr 0.200, Edge Mask Strength 2.000 and Edge Blur 0.200. Treat those as captured UI values only. The reusable workflow is the order of decisions, not copying the numbers.
03A REPEATABLE EDGE-SHARPEN PATH
Detect → clean → select → sharpen → integrate.
This order keeps Threshold, Mask Strength, Radius and Blend from compensating for one another. Each control gets one job and one diagnostic question.
Judge the source at real pixel scale
Identify the contours that genuinely need more definition before touching the effect. Fit-to-view can hide halos and detector noise.
This is a teaching decision path, not a literal Resolve processing graph. Its purpose is to keep detector cleanup, edge membership, matte weighting, sharpening width and final mix as separate decisions.

04FOUR REAL EDGE-SELECTION DECISIONS
Portrait, High ISO, graphics and mild softness fail in different ways.
Use these as diagnostic procedures, not presets. The important skill is recognizing whether the detector or the sharpening stage is currently limiting the result.
Portrait: eyes and lips without crunchy skin
Add contour clarity to eyes, lashes, lips, and hairline without turning pores and skin noise into a grid.
- 01
Enable Display Edges and raise Pre Denoise until pores/noise stop dominating the matte.
- 02
Adjust Edge Detect Thr so eyes/lips remain while weak skin texture falls away.
- 03
Return to normal view and add Amount with a small Radius; use Edge Blur only if the matte is too hard.
High ISO: sharpening after cleanup
Reinforce real object edges after noise reduction without reviving residual noise.
- 01
Judge the cleaned shot at 100%; do not begin with high Amount.
- 02
Display Edges + Pre Denoise should remove most random speckle from the matte.
- 03
Check playback: a shimmering edge matte is worse than slightly conservative sharpening.
Graphics and UI: clean contours
Strengthen lettering and geometric boundaries without wide ringing.
- 01
Clean graphics usually need little Pre Denoise because the detector already sees clean transitions.
- 02
Use Threshold to exclude weak texture and keep Radius narrow.
- 03
Check the export for rescaling and codec edge ringing.
Mildly soft shot: perceptual rescue
Make existing boundaries more convincing without pretending edge enhancement reconstructs lost focus.
- 01
Confirm that real edges still exist; strong defocus cannot be reconstructed by this FX.
- 02
Build a clean matte on the main contours first.
- 03
Raise Amount only to perceptual improvement, then stop before halos appear.
05CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHARPEN TOOL
Use Sharpen Edges when contours — not texture bands — are the selection mechanism.
The Sharpen family overlaps in purpose but not in selectivity. Choose the tool whose selection model matches the actual problem.
| FX | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Sharpen Edges | When sharpness is needed mainly on detected contours while flat regions should stay cleaner. |
| Sharpen ↗ | When fine, medium, and large detail need independent enhancement across the full image. |
| Soften and Sharpen ↗ | When a texture-EQ approach is needed: separate spatial bands can be enhanced or softened. |
| AI UltraSharpen ↗ | When AI-selective recovery is preferred for mildly soft, moving, or upscaled footage in a Resolve 21 Studio workflow. |
06DIAGNOSE THE STAGE THAT FAILED
A noisy matte, missing edge and halo are three different problems.
Start in Display Edges whenever the artifact could originate in selection. Only troubleshoot Amount/Radius after the matte itself is credible.
01Display Edges is filled with noisy snow+
Likely cause: The detector is treating grain, sensor noise, or compression texture as edges.
Fix: Raise Pre Denoise and/or Edge Detect Thr; judge Amount only afterwards.
02Desired lashes or fine graphics disappeared from the matte+
Likely cause: Pre Denoise or Threshold has become too aggressive.
Fix: Reduce Pre Denoise slightly first; if the edge is still absent, lower Threshold carefully.
03Bright/dark halos appeared around edges+
Likely cause: Sharpen Radius and/or Amount is too large for the scale of the contour.
Fix: Reduce Radius first, then Amount; do not treat a wide halo with Global Blend alone.
04Sharpening is useful but feels too hard+
Likely cause: The edge matte is too narrow/hard or Edge Mask Strength is too high.
Fix: Inspect the matte; add a little Edge Blur or reduce Mask Strength instead of widening Radius without reason.
05Flat areas also start looking sharpened+
Likely cause: Threshold is too low, Edge Blur is too broad, or noise has already entered the matte.
Fix: Return to Display Edges, clean the selection, and only then tune the final sharpening.
06Still frame looks good but edges shimmer in motion+
Likely cause: The detector is unstable on noise/hair/compression or the effect is too aggressive for moving structure.
Fix: Check 100% playback, stabilize the matte with Pre Denoise/Threshold, and reduce Amount/Strength.
07BEFORE DELIVERY
The detector must survive pixels, motion and compression.
The final QC checks both the selection matte and the visible sharpen because edge-selective artifacts often begin before the final image stage.
08FAQ
Practical Sharpen Edges questions.
How is Sharpen Edges different from regular Sharpen?
Sharpen works across multiple detail scales throughout the image, while Sharpen Edges first builds an edge matte and limits sharpening to selected contours.
What is Display Edges for?
It shows the internal grayscale edge matte so Pre Denoise, Threshold, Mask Strength, and Edge Blur can be tuned independently of the final look.
Is Pre Denoise a full noise-reduction stage?
No. Here it is used to clean the analysis image before edge detection so random noise is less likely to enter the matte.
What should I reduce first when halos appear: Radius or Amount?
Usually Radius first because it controls the width of enhancement around the boundary; then reduce Amount if necessary.
Can it recover missed focus?
It can only improve the perception of existing edges. Detail genuinely lost to strong defocus is not reconstructed by ordinary edge sharpening.
Why use Edge Mask Strength if Sharpen Amount exists?
Amount controls sharpening strength, while Mask Strength controls the weight of the detected selection. They act at different stages of the chain.
When should I use Global Blend?
After the matte, Radius, and Amount are already correct. Blend is final integration, not a way to hide a bad detector.
