Audio Waveforms in DaVinci Resolve: Fix Flat, Missing or Hard-to-Read Displays

Separate real audio problems from display settings and make dialogue waveforms useful again.

This lesson starts by confirming that the clip actually contains audio, then fixes waveform display, track height and view modes so pauses and transients are easy to read while editing.

1. Confirm that the audio is actually present

A flat-looking track does not automatically mean the audio file is empty or damaged. Play the clip, watch the meters and confirm that the expected audio channel is connected. If you can hear the signal, the issue is usually display scale or waveform view settings.

  • Audio plays but the waveform is missing → check display and cache.
  • No audio and no waveform → inspect Clip Attributes, channels and the source file.

2. Timeline View Options and audio track height

On the Edit page, open Timeline View Options. Make sure audio waveforms are enabled and give the audio track enough vertical height. A perfectly normal waveform can look like a thin line when the track is compressed.

3. Rectified, Non-Rectified and Full Waveform views

Resolve can draw amplitude in different ways. Non-Rectified shows positive and negative signal around a center line, while Full Waveform uses more of the track height. Use the view that makes speech, breaths, pauses and peaks easiest for you to identify.

  • For dialogue editing, readability matters more than choosing a theoretically “correct” waveform style.

4. If the waveform still does not appear

Long or demanding media may take time to generate a visible waveform. Give Resolve a moment, change timeline zoom slightly or reopen the project. If only one file is affected, inspect its Clip Attributes and audio channel mapping.

Important

Do not transcode or replace source media just because the waveform has not been drawn yet. First confirm that the signal itself is actually missing.

5. Use the waveform as an editing aid, not an oracle

A readable waveform helps you locate pauses, breaths, claps and sharp transients quickly. But do not edit dialogue with your eyes alone: a visually short pause may be important for meaning and delivery.
