RESOLVE FX · TARGETED AI SKIN CLEANUP
AI Blemish
Removal.
Remove the distraction.
Keep the character.
AI Blemish Removal is deliberately narrow: Blackmagic gives you one dedicated Strength control for superficial skin imperfections, then the normal Global Blend. The craft is therefore not parameter hunting — it is defining intent, applying the minimum useful dose, protecting deliberate facial detail, and checking the whole shot in motion.
Intent · Target
Strength · QC
Motion · Blend
The lab is intentionally adversarial: try Acne, then switch to Soot or Freckles. A useful AI-retouch workflow must survive the cases where “imperfection” and “intentional detail” look visually similar.
Independent deterministic teaching proxy. It does not reproduce Blackmagic’s proprietary AI, training data, detection thresholds or exact Strength scale. The candidate map intentionally demonstrates one production truth: a model can confuse blemish-like visual cues with intentional detail, so human review remains mandatory.
Three native Resolve 21 Inspector captures plus an independent blemish-detection teaching proxy.
INTENT · STRENGTH · HUMAN QC01TARGETED, NOT GENERAL
The effect works best when you decide what counts as a blemish before the model does.
Blackmagic describes the tool as AI-powered removal of superficial facial and skin blemishes while preserving natural texture, and explicitly warns that intentionally dirty faces can confuse it. That warning is the key to the whole workflow.
It is targeted AI cleanup, not a Beauty filter
Blackmagic positions Blemish Removal for reducing superficial skin imperfections such as acne, discoloration, spots, pores and similar blemishes while retaining natural texture. The job is narrower than Beauty: remove distracting local problems rather than smooth the entire face.
Strength is dosage, not AI quality
Raising Strength does not make the analysis smarter; it increases the amount of blemish removal. The useful setting is therefore the minimum that makes the target imperfection stop distracting while pores, moles, fine folds and characteristic texture remain believable.
The AI does not know artistic intent
Blackmagic explicitly warns about intentionally dirty faces such as soot because the algorithm can interpret production makeup or dirt as blemishes. The same decision applies to freckles, scars and character features: define what should disappear and what belongs to the person before processing.

02REAL RESOLVE 21 CONTROLS
A tiny Inspector shifts responsibility from parameter tuning to judgment.
The three native captures confirm the control set. Strength changes the amount of blemish removal; Global Blend meters the finished node result. The 0.500 and 1.000 values visible in captures are project states, not universal recipes.
01 / AI CORRECTION
Dedicated control
- Strength
Adjusts the amount of Blemish Removal. Start low and raise it only until the target imperfection stops distracting.
CHECKInspect pores, freckles, moles, lip/eye edges and fine hair. If they disappear together with the blemish, Strength is already too high.
02 / FINAL MIX
Standard final control
- Global Blend · Blend
Mixes the processed result with the source. Use it after Strength already solves the task without obviously damaging texture.
CHECKIf the result only looks acceptable at a very low Blend, reduce Strength or localize the node first; Blend should not become an emergency patch.
03THE CLEANUP PATH
Intent comes before Strength, and human QC comes before Blend.
A reliable production sequence is define → optionally isolate → set minimum useful Strength → check motion → finish with Blend. External windows, keys and tracking are node-level tools, not hidden controls inside Blemish Removal.
Define the target before AI touches the face
Decide whether the visible detail is acne, a temporary spot, makeup, soot, freckles, a scar or a character feature. The model cannot infer production intent for you.
Teaching workflow, not a literal Resolve node graph. The native effect exposes Strength and Global Blend; windows, keys and tracking are separate Color-page tools used to limit where the node contributes.
04PRODUCTION PRACTICE
Three stress tests teach more than a list of preset values.
Face scale, codec, lighting, makeup, sharpening and motion all change what the model sees. Treat the recipes as decision frameworks and verify the actual clip.
Talking head: one or two obvious blemishes
Localize the node to the face if needed, raise Strength from a low value, and stop as soon as the blemish no longer pulls attention. Compare bypass at 100%, then check several seconds of motion.
Red spot or local discoloration
First confirm the problem is genuinely local. If AI cleanup starts altering normal skin tone around the spot, lower Strength and consider a tracked window or the more deterministic Patch Replacer.
Makeup, soot, freckles and character features
Treat this as a mandatory stress test. Verify that the algorithm is not reading deliberate character detail as a defect. If it is, localize the node, reduce Strength, or do not use the effect on that shot.
05CHOOSE THE RIGHT REPAIR
Use AI Blemish Removal for small superficial distractions, not every face-retouch problem.
| Tool | Best at | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| AI Blemish Removal | Fast AI reduction of small superficial skin imperfections. | Minimal controls and no understanding of artistic intent. |
| Beauty | Broader smoothing plus explicit detail/texture recovery. | Too broad when only one tiny blemish needs attention. |
| Patch Replacer / Paint | Deterministic repair of a specific larger or difficult defect. | More setup, masking and tracking work. |
| AI Face Refinement | Feature-aware facial refinement across skin, eyes, lips and more. | Much heavier than a simple local blemish cleanup. |
06TROUBLESHOOTING
The most dangerous failure is a technically clean result that changes the person.
When the tool removes the wrong thing, adding more processing is rarely the answer. Identify whether the failure is excessive Strength, wrong intent, poor spatial isolation, motion QC, or simply the wrong repair tool.
01Skin looks too clean and sterile+
Likely cause: Strength is higher than the target blemish needs, or the node covers too large an area.
Fix: Lower Strength, inspect bypass at 100%, and localize the node with a tracked window/key if necessary. Use Global Blend only after that.
02Freckles, makeup or soot disappear+
Likely cause: The AI is interpreting intentional detail as a blemish, a documented limitation of the tool.
Fix: Do not try to overpower the problem with more settings. Protect the area with a mask/key, lower Strength, or omit the effect on that shot.
03A still frame looks good but the retouch reads in motion+
Likely cause: The correction is too strong, source texture changes, motion blur varies, or an external mask is not following the face well.
Fix: Judge the clip in playback, track any external mask separately, and lower Strength to a level that survives the full shot.
04A large defect remains or turns into a strange patch+
Likely cause: Blemish Removal targets superficial local imperfections, while the repair needs a controlled source patch or manual retouch.
Fix: Move the difficult repair to Patch Replacer/Paint/Clone and keep AI Blemish Removal for smaller secondary imperfections.
07PRE-FLIGHT
The pass is finished when it survives intent, texture and motion checks.
08FAQ
Practical AI Blemish Removal questions.
How is AI Blemish Removal different from Beauty?+
Beauty is a broad skin-retouch effect with smoothing and recovery stages. AI Blemish Removal is a narrow AI tool aimed at superficial local imperfections with a dedicated Strength control.
Does the effect expose face tracking?+
The native Resolve FX Inspector captures do not expose separate face-detection or tracking controls. Do not attribute controls that are not there. If you localize the node with a window/key, track that external isolation with its own workflow.
Can it be combined with Beauty?+
Yes. A sensible order is to remove isolated distracting blemishes first, then add Beauty very gently if broader skin refinement is still needed. Check texture and bypass after each stage.
Why does Blackmagic warn about soot?+
Because the algorithm responds to visual blemish-like cues, not artistic intent. An intentionally dirty face can look like a collection of blemishes to the model. It is a useful reminder that AI retouch always requires human QC.
