RESOLVE FX · TRACKED AI AGE TRANSFORM
AI Face Age
Transformer.
Track the person first.
Change the years second.
Face Age Transformer is a tracked face pipeline, not a magic age slider. Resolve first has to locate and follow the correct face; only then do Subject’s Age and Age Offset guide the neural transformation. A believable result depends as much on tracking, boundary control and artistic intent as on the age numbers themselves.
Face · Alpha
Detect · Manual
Age · Blend
Use the lab adversarially: reduce Track confidence or move Manual X/Y before touching Age Offset. It makes the central production rule obvious — spatial errors must be solved before aesthetic judgment.
Independent deterministic teaching proxy. It demonstrates the causality of localization → baseline → offset → blend, but does not reproduce Blackmagic’s neural model, face detector, tracking data, wrinkle synthesis or exact scales. Manual X/Y intentionally show why a spatial error should be repaired before judging age.
Five native Resolve 21 Inspector captures plus an independent localization-and-aging teaching proxy.
LOCATE · TRACK · AGE · QC01TWO-PART OPERATION
Aging starts only after Resolve knows which face it is following.
Blackmagic describes the effect as a two-part operation: identify and track the face, then adjust aging. The official limitations around dirty/shadowed faces and neighboring regions make that order a practical requirement, not just documentation wording.
Locate the face first
AI Face Age Transformer is not a conventional full-frame filter. Blackmagic describes it as a two-part process: first the face must be identified and tracked consistently through the clip, then the age transformation is applied. Face Location selects the localization source: Detected uses the internal face detector/tracker, while From Input Alpha accepts a prepared alpha region from another node. If that first stage is unstable, every downstream Age Shift adjustment can look like an AI-model failure even though the real problem is upstream localization.
Subject’s Age is the model baseline, not the target
Subject’s Age tells the model the perceived starting age of the person in the shot. Age Offset then adds or removes years relative to that baseline. Entering the desired final age into Subject’s Age is therefore a logic error: the same Age Offset is interpreted differently from different starting values. Blackmagic also notes a practical model range: when Subject’s Age is already low, a strongly negative Offset eventually stops producing further visible change.
Judge the boundary, not only the face
Official documentation states that the tool focuses on the face and does not guarantee matching changes to the neck, ears, or hair color; adjacent regions can occasionally be affected as well. Intentionally dirty or heavily shadowed faces can also confuse the AI analysis. Production QC therefore must ask more than “does the person look older or younger?”: inspect the face boundary, hairline and ears, head turns, and whether the result still matches the artistic intent of the scene.

02REAL RESOLVE 21 CONTROLS
The Inspector is a pipeline: localization, tracking, age baseline, age delta, blend.
The five native captures document the actual project UI. Values visible in those captures are states from one Resolve session, not recommended presets.
Stage 01 · Acquisition
Face Location and subject selection
- Face Location
Chooses where the effect obtains the face region: Detected uses the internal detector/tracker, while From Input Alpha uses the alpha input of another node. In an alpha workflow, that matte must be built and tracked separately.
CHECKDo not switch modes as a way to fix the wrong age. This is a localization control, not an appearance control.
- Detect Faces In Frame
Finds recognizable faces in the current frame and creates bounding boxes. If several faces are found, select the intended subject in the Viewer before committing to a long tracking pass.
CHECKRecheck the active face after a cut, shot change, or a new Find in Frame operation.
Stage 02 · Tracking
Stable face tracking
- Track Reverse / Track Forward / 1 Frame / Forward then Reverse
The transport-like controls build the track backward, forward, one frame at a time, or in both directions. Track Forward then Reverse is a useful first full pass, but difficult sections still require manual review.
CHECKInspect the bounding box through head turns, motion blur and brief occlusions.
- Find in Frame · Show Overlay · Manual Adjustments
Find in Frame re-acquires the face in the current frame, Show Overlay toggles the diagnostic overlay, and Manual Adjustments provides a keyframable local position override after drift or occlusion.
CHECKUse Manual Adjustments locally. If they are required throughout the clip, rebuild the track or the upstream alpha instead.
Stage 03 · Age Shift
Age as baseline plus delta
- Subject’s Age
Sets the perceived starting age of the subject in human years. It is the baseline used to interpret Age Offset, so it should describe the source image before transformation.
CHECKA wrong baseline encourages compensating with Offset and makes the result less predictable.
- Age Offset
The number of years to add or remove. Positive Offset ages the face, negative Offset de-ages it; Blackmagic describes changes to wrinkles, skin tautness and facial fullness as part of the AI transformation.
CHECKMove in moderate steps and compare with bypass. Extreme values reveal model limits and uncanny-valley artifacts sooner.
Stage 04 · Finish
Global Blend as the final dosage
- Global Blend · Blend
Mixes the entire calculated effect output with the original signal. It is the right final control when the direction and character of aging/de-aging are already correct.
CHECKIf a low Blend is required to hide bad tracking, a wrong Subject’s Age or contamination of neighboring regions, fix the upstream cause instead.
03THE AGE PATH
Repair localization before you judge the AI transformation.
A production-safe sequence is locate → track → set baseline → shift age → inspect boundaries → blend. External masks and alpha routing are separate node-level tools even though they may be essential to the shot.
Choose how the face is found
Use Detected for the built-in workflow or From Input Alpha when a prepared tracked matte should define the face region.
Teaching workflow, not a literal Resolve node graph. External masks, alpha routing and additional VFX passes live outside the Face Age effect even though they may be essential to a production-safe result.
04PRODUCTION PRACTICE
Flashbacks, flash-forwards and difficult tracks fail for different reasons.
Use these as diagnostic frameworks rather than numeric presets. The same Offset behaves differently when the baseline, lighting, face scale or tracking quality changes.
Flashback: moderate de-aging
Start from the subject’s true perceived age, then lower Age Offset in modest steps. Check eyes, nasolabial folds, jawline and the hair boundary; once tracking is solid, use Blend only for the final believable amount.
Flash-forward: aging without an old-age mask
Confirm Subject’s Age first, then add years gradually. Jumping straight to a large Offset is more likely to create a stylized or synthetic result. Inspect facial fullness, wrinkles, and consistency with the neck and ears, which the effect is not guaranteed to age.
Head turn or partial occlusion
Stabilize the tracking pass first. Around the difficult range, use Find in Frame and local Manual Adjustments, or switch to From Input Alpha with your own tracked isolation if needed. Judge Age Shift only after the face geometry has stopped drifting.
05CHOOSE THE RIGHT FACE TOOL
Age, cleanup, beauty and reshaping solve different portrait problems.
| Tool | Best at | Main boundary |
|---|---|---|
| AI Face Age Transformer | Temporally consistent aging/de-aging of a tracked face. | Face-focused; neck, ears and hair are not guaranteed to follow. |
| AI Blemish Removal | Targeted removal of superficial skin blemishes. | Does not change age structure or facial geometry. |
| Beauty | Broad smoothing with detail and texture recovery. | Retouching, not an age model. |
| AI Face Reshaper / Face Refinement | Facial feature shape or detailed portrait refinement. | Different intent: structure/refinement rather than years. |
06TROUBLESHOOTING
Do not use Age Offset to fix a tracking problem.
Most failures belong to one of four layers: localization, tracking, model range, or boundary contamination. Diagnose the layer first; only then change the relevant control.
01The perceived age pulses through the clip+
Likely cause: The face track drifts, re-acquisition jumps, or the face becomes hard to read intermittently.
Fix: Enable Show Overlay, isolate the problematic frame range, repair the track with Find in Frame/Manual Adjustments or use an external alpha. Do not treat temporal instability by changing Age Offset.
02De-aging stops becoming stronger+
Likely cause: You reached the practical model range at a low Subject’s Age; Blackmagic explicitly documents this saturation limit.
Fix: Verify that Subject’s Age matches the source. If the baseline is correct, accept the model limit rather than forcing a more extreme Offset.
03Ears, hairline or adjacent background are affected+
Likely cause: The AI spills beyond the intended area; Face Age Transformer does not guarantee perfect isolation of neighboring regions.
Fix: Restrict the node with a tracked mask or use Face Location = From Input Alpha. Inspect the boundary during head motion.
04Dirt or makeup disappears as an age-related feature+
Likely cause: An intentionally dirty or shadowed face confuses the AI analysis, an officially documented limitation of the tool.
Fix: Re-evaluate artistic intent, isolate the effect more tightly, or skip Face Age Transformer for that shot. The AI does not know that the dirt was intentional.
07PRE-FLIGHT
The shot is finished when the track, age logic and face boundary all survive motion.
08FAQ
Practical AI Face Age Transformer questions.
What comes first, Age Offset or tracking?+
Tracking. Blackmagic describes Face Age Transformer as a two-part operation: first identify/track the face, then apply the age transformation. Tuning Age Shift on an unstable face box is meaningless.
How is Detected different from From Input Alpha?+
Detected uses the effect’s internal detection and tracking. From Input Alpha takes the face region from another node’s alpha input, which is useful for difficult isolation, multiple faces or an existing tracked matte.
Is Subject’s Age the age after processing?+
No. It is the perceived starting age. The final direction is set by Age Offset: positive ages, negative de-ages.
Do the neck and hair need separate work?+
Often yes. Blackmagic explicitly says the effect does not guarantee changes to the neck, ears or hair color. A close flash-forward may require a separate grade or VFX pass.
