RESOLVE FX · TRACKED FACIAL GEOMETRY

AI Face
Reshaper.

Track the performance.
Change the minimum geometry.

AI Face Reshaper changes the size, placement and shape of facial features on a moving subject. Its real dependency is temporal: the face must be detected and tracked correctly before any deformation can look stable. From there, global Face Shape establishes the basis and local Eyes/Nose/Mouth/Eyebrows controls should solve only specific problems. The finish line is not “more attractive”; it is a correction that survives motion, boundaries and a bypass comparison without changing identity.

Try the Glasses / edges scene, push Face Width, then open Warp field. The boundary moves before the center feels dramatically different — a useful reminder that aggressive facial geometry has costs outside the feature you are watching.

Independent deterministic teaching proxy. Slider names mirror selected visible controls, but numeric ranges and the warp math are intentionally illustrative. The model exists to show causality: tracking error moves the entire deformation, global shape affects boundaries, and multiple local changes accumulate. It does not reproduce Blackmagic’s AI, landmarks, temporal solver or exact deformation field.

THE WARP MODEL

A believable reshape is a temporal geometry problem.

Read the effect as a dependency chain: locate → track → global shape → local features → motion/boundary QC. Every downstream control inherits tracking errors and every deformation adds stress to nearby texture.

TRACK

Track first, deform second

Blackmagic describes Face Reshaper as a two-stage process: first locate and stably track the face across the clip, then reshape it. Any spatial tracking error becomes a drifting deformation. Show Overlay validates the bounding box, Find in Frame reacquires a lost face, and Manual Adjustments plus Interpolate (Keyframed) repair local tracking failures.

IDENTITY

Face Shape changes identity the fastest

Size, Width, Length, Chin, Jaw and Forehead act on the overall geometry, so even small values alter the proportions viewers use to recognize a person. In production, solve one real problem first, then compare against bypass. Face Shape is not a collection of independent “beautifiers”: several moderate changes accumulate into one strong deformation.

FEATURES

Local features must be judged in motion

Eyes, Nose, Mouth and Eyebrows depend on facial landmarks. A still frame can look convincing while a head turn, blink, smile or partial occlusion immediately exposes warping errors. Smile, Eyebag, Nose and independently adjusted Eyes/Eyebrows deserve extra care because they directly affect expression and symmetry.

SUBTLE

Subtle is a technical constraint, not just an aesthetic preference

Blackmagic explicitly warns that aggressive values reach the uncanny valley quickly. The reason is not purely aesthetic: the farther geometry moves from the source anatomy, the more texture and nearby background around the hairline, ears and glasses are stretched, and temporal consistency becomes harder to maintain. The best result often sits earlier than a single still suggests.

REAL RESOLVE 21 CONTROLS

Five captures reveal six distinct stages of facial geometry.

The screenshots are the evidence for current control names. The map to the right explains intent and failure modes without pretending that the numeric scale is a physical unit.

STAGE 01 · TRACK

Face detection, tracking and Face Location

Detect Faces In Frame

Finds recognizable faces in the current frame; if several are present, the intended bounding box is selected.

CHECKTrack the entire clip, not just the easy section.

Track Reverse / Forward · Find in Frame

The standard tracking controls: reverse/forward, single-frame steps and reacquiring the face in the current frame.

CHECKFind in Frame repairs reacquisition, but the surrounding motion still needs review.

Show Overlay

Shows the tracking overlay for spatial diagnostics.

CHECKUse the overlay for tracking QC; judge naturalness without diagnostic graphics.

Manual Adjustments · Interpolate (Keyframed)

Manual Adjustments overrides face position with keyframes; Interpolate builds the in-between motion between manually defined start/end points when the automatic track fails.

CHECKRepair the track before judging geometry; otherwise shape sliders are being used to compensate for a spatial error.

STAGE 02 · GLOBAL SHAPE

Face Shape: overall silhouette and proportions

Adjust Face

Enables or disables the entire Face Shape section.

CHECKUseful for A/B of the global shape without disabling local feature sections.

Size · Width · Length

Size scales the face overall; Width changes horizontal width; Length changes vertical length.

CHECKDo not use one control to compensate for a different problem: a wide-lens portrait does not automatically mean reducing Width.

Cheek Position · Chin · Jaw · Forehead

Cheek Position moves the cheekbones vertically; Chin/Jaw/Forehead change the size of those regions.

CHECKJaw, Chin and Forehead strongly affect identity and the boundary near the hairline/background.

STAGE 03 · EYES

Eyes: symmetry, placement and opening

Adjust Eyes · Adjust Eyes Separately

Adjust Eyes enables the section; Separate splits left and right eye controls for independent adjustment.

CHECKSeparate helps with perspective or real asymmetry, but can easily create an artificial mismatch.

Size · Height · Separation · Position · Angle

Control eye size, opening, separation, vertical placement and tilt.

CHECKCheck blinks and fast turns; local warping is easiest to spot there.

Eyebag

Adjusts the position of the under-eye bag region; it is not conventional skin smoothing.

CHECKDo not use it as a substitute for Beauty/Face Refinement skin treatment.

STAGE 04 · NOSE

Nose: local geometry without protrusion control

Adjust Nose · Size · Width · Height

Enables the section and changes overall size, width and vertical height. The official guide describes Height as vertical height in the face, not how far the nose protrudes.

CHECKThe nose sits at the visual center of the face; even a small tracking/warp error is obvious during turns.

STAGE 05 · MOUTH

Mouth: geometry and expression

Adjust Mouth · Size · Position · Width · Smile

Size/Width change mouth dimensions, Position moves it vertically, and Smile changes the corner angle toward a smile or frown.

CHECKSmile changes expression, not just proportions. Check speech and lip closure in motion.

STAGE 06 · EYEBROWS

Eyebrows: placement, separation and tilt

Adjust Eyebrows · Adjust Eyebrows Separately

Enables brow reshaping and optionally splits left/right controls.

CHECKSeparate mode helps with asymmetry, but verify that the expression has not changed unintentionally.

Position · Separation · Thickness · Tilt

Change vertical position, brow separation, thickness and angle.

CHECKTilt and Position quickly change the emotional read of a face; use minimal values.

03

THE RESHAPE PATH

Fix spatial truth before changing facial truth.

This order makes diagnosis cheap: drift belongs to tracking, identity changes belong to global shape, expression problems belong to local features, and edge stretching belongs to deformation strength/boundary conditions.

Select the correct face

Run Detect Faces In Frame, select the intended subject if several faces are present, and verify the bounding box before shaping anything.

Teaching workflow, not a literal Resolve node graph. External masks, cleanup nodes or compositing repairs may still be required when a shot exceeds what a facial warp can safely handle.

04

PRODUCTION PRACTICE

Four production patterns cover most responsible uses.

These are decision frameworks, not presets. Focal length, head angle, expression, makeup, glasses and background geometry all change the safe range.

01

Correct a wide-angle close-up

Start with Face Shape Width/Length and only then make tiny Nose Width or Eyes Separation changes if needed. The goal is to reduce the feel of optical exaggeration, not create a different face. Compare against a 100% bypass every one or two changes.

02

Mild asymmetry in a three-quarter angle

If perspective makes the eyes or brows read differently, enable Separate only for the necessary group. Validate tracking through the turn first, then move one side very slightly. Do not erase natural asymmetry in pursuit of mathematical symmetry.

03

Subtle jaw/chin correction without uncanny valley

Use either Chin or Jaw as the primary control and the other only as a minimal supporting adjustment. Watch the neck line, ears, hairline and background: local stretching often appears there before it becomes obvious inside the face.

04

Dialogue and changing expression

For a speaking subject, judge Mouth/Smile only in real time. Review lip opening/closure, smiles, consonants and extreme mouth shapes. If the adjustment works only on a still frame, reduce it or remove that local correction.

05

Face Reshaper is for geometry, not texture or age.

06

TROUBLESHOOTING

Most failures belong to tracking, identity, expression or boundaries.

Classify the failure before changing sliders. A drifting warp is not fixed by more Face Shape; a changed expression is not fixed by tracking; background stretching is not a reason to increase a local control.

01The reshaping swims during a head turn+

Likely cause: A tracking/Face Location error rather than insufficient reshaping.
Fix: Enable Show Overlay, find the failure, use Find in Frame or Manual Adjustments plus Interpolate, then re-evaluate the shape.

02Hair, ears, glasses or background stretch+

Likely cause: Too much deformation near facial boundaries or a difficult angle/occlusion.
Fix: Reduce the global Face Shape, inspect local sections and, if needed, isolate the shot externally with tracking/nodes rather than pushing the effect harder.

03The subject looks like a different person+

Likely cause: Several moderate global/local reshapes accumulated and changed identity-defining proportions.
Fix: Return to bypass, keep only one or two changes with a clear purpose, and reduce them toward the threshold of visibility.

04Eyes or brows look mismatched after Separate+

Likely cause: Independent left/right values over-corrected perspective or began compensating for a tracking error.
Fix: Validate the track first, then compare linked mode against Separate. Separate should be a minimal correction to one side only.

05Smile changes the personality of the expression+

Likely cause: Smile is an expression control and has moved too far from the source performance.
Fix: Reduce Smile, review the full dialogue range, and do not use it for a problem better solved with Position/Width or editorial choices.

FAQ

Practical AI Face Reshaper questions.

How is AI Face Reshaper different from AI Face Refinement?+

Reshaper changes the geometry and position of facial features. Face Refinement focuses on skin isolation, texture/grading, relighting and feature-aware cosmetic corrections rather than changing facial shape.

Can it correct wide-angle distortion?+

Yes, small Width/Length/Nose/Eyes adjustments can reduce the feel of close-up distortion. The tool does not know the physical lens model and is not a lens-correction effect.

What is Interpolate (Keyframed) for?+

Blackmagic describes it as a repair mechanism for a tracking-error section: define the start, then the corrected end face position, and let the tool interpolate the frames between them.

Why does Blackmagic recommend small values?+

People are exceptionally sensitive to faces; large proportional changes quickly look artificial. Stronger deformation also raises the risk of boundary warping and temporal artifacts.

Sources and boundaries

The page separates evidence from demonstration: control names and semantics are grounded in native Resolve 21 captures and Blackmagic’s current guide; the interactive portrait warp is an independent deterministic teaching proxy.
