RESOLVE FX · SINGLE-FRAME RESCUE
Frame Replacer.
One broken frame.
Rebuild only that moment.
Frame Replacer is the whole-frame rescue tool inside Revival. Mark the exact corrupt frame, compare the two neighboring sources, escalate to blending or Optical Flow only when motion requires it, and judge the repair as a temporal transition rather than a pretty still.
Replace This Frame
Prev / Next / Blend / Flow
N-1 → N → N+1
In the lab, choose Linear motion and compare From Previous, From Next, Blend Prev/Next and Optical Flow. Then switch to Occlusion: the most sophisticated method can become the wrong method when motion estimation loses a clean correspondence.

Target: N / single frame
Independent animated teaching proxy, not Resolve rendering. It illustrates the causal difference between one-sided duplication, two-frame blending, motion-aware interpolation, a frame-specific target and final wet/dry mix. It does not reproduce Blackmagic optical-flow estimation, keyframe behavior, interpolation quality, renderer precision or exact parameter mapping.
Five native Resolve 21 captures + an explicitly labeled temporal proxy
5 captures · 4 methods · 4 exercises01WHAT FRAME REPLACER ACTUALLY SOLVES
The unit of repair is one complete frame.
This is not a detector and not a local patch tool. It is a deliberately small temporal decision: identify one bad frame, mark that time position, and decide how neighboring clean information should replace it.
Frame Replacer replaces the whole frame, not the defect inside it.
This Resolve FX is designed for a corrupt frame or artifact that lasts only one frame. If the problem is local—dust, a dead pixel, or a small scratch—whole-frame replacement changes far more than necessary. Classify the defect scale first: local repair and whole-frame replacement solve different problems.
Replace This Frame is a point in time, not a generic enable switch.
According to the manual, enabling Replace This Frame selects the specific frame to replace and automatically applies a keyframe at the appropriate clip location. Production workflow therefore begins with exact frame identification and frame-by-frame review. Multiple damaged frames need separate marking and separate QC rather than one broad setting across the shot.
Replacement Method chooses the temporal reconstruction model.
From Previous and From Next literally duplicate one neighboring frame. Blend Prev/Next mixes both adjacent frames. Optical Flow constructs the replacement using optical-flow technology and information from before and after. No method is always superior: motion, occlusion, motion blur, grain, and lighting changes determine which source looks natural.
A single still can hide duplicated motion, a one-frame pause, a ghosted edge, or flow warping. Review frame N-1 → repaired N → N+1 both in playback and frame by frame. Global Blend only makes sense after selecting the best reconstruction method: it is a final mix, not a way to hide bad geometry.
02THE ACTUAL PANEL
Only three decisions — but each one has a different job.
Five native captures anchor the full panel, the main controls, the method dropdown/focus and Global Blend. The captured Blend Prev/Next state is reference evidence, not a recommended default.
01 · TARGET FRAME
Mark only the frame that is actually broken.
- Replace This Frame
Enables replacement at the current playhead position. The official manual states that Resolve automatically applies a keyframe at the appropriate clip location, making it practical to target isolated bad frames without changing neighboring healthy frames.
CheckBefore enabling it, confirm that the playhead is on the exact corrupt frame. Then inspect that keyframed frame together with neighboring N-1/N+1 frames.
02 · REPLACEMENT METHOD
Choose how the new full frame is constructed.
- From Previous
Replaces the selected frame with the immediately preceding frame, effectively creating a temporal duplicate of the previous state. It is maximally predictable and often effective on static or very slow motion.
CheckLook for a one-frame hold: a moving subject or camera may appear to freeze briefly, and the grain pattern can repeat.
- From Next
Substitutes the immediately following frame. It is the same class of solution as From Previous but biased forward in time. It may match better when the previous frame already contains the beginning of corruption or when the next frame better matches motion or exposure.
CheckCheck whether the subject appears one frame too far ahead and whether motion cadence becomes uneven.
- Blend Prev/Next
Blends the frames immediately before and after the damaged frame. With limited motion it can be gentler than a hard one-sided duplicate, but two different subject positions can turn into ghosting or a double edge.
CheckInspect high-contrast moving edges, faces, hands, and small text. If two temporal states are visible simultaneously, switch to a one-sided source or Optical Flow.
- Optical Flow
Uses Resolve optical-flow technology to construct the replacement from the frames before and after. This is the motion-aware option: instead of a simple duplicate or alpha blend it attempts to interpolate an intermediate motion state.
CheckOn occlusions, crossing edges, deformation, fast motion, and heavy motion blur, inspect for warping, tearing, and invented detail. A more complex method is not guaranteed to be better.
03 · FINAL MIX
Dose only an already-correct replacement.
- Global Blend
Mixes the computed Frame Replacer result with the original frame. Full effect is useful for honestly comparing methods; a lower Blend can soften the intervention when the original frame is partially usable and the replacement feels too strong.
CheckIf Blend must be reduced heavily because of ghosting or warping, the problem is usually the Replacement Method. Change the temporal strategy first, then return to the mix.
Manual detail worth remembering: checking Replace This Frame automatically applies a keyframe at the appropriate clip location. That makes the UI compact because frame targeting is part of the control behavior itself.
03SIMPLEST-SOURCE-FIRST
Do not jump to Optical Flow before proving you need it.
The efficient path is exact frame → automatic keyframe → Previous/Next A/B → Blend/Flow only if needed → N-1/N/N+1 playback QC. Complexity is a fallback, not a badge of quality.
Find the single damaged frame
Step frame by frame and identify the exact corrupt image. Frame Replacer is strongest when the problem is truly isolated to one frame.
Teaching workflow, not a literal Resolve graph. The important order is target frame → simplest temporal source → motion-aware alternatives → playback QC → final blend.

04BUILD IT IN RESOLVE
Four exercises that expose the real boundaries of the effect.
Use your own footage and judge transitions in motion. These are diagnostic procedures around documented controls, not magic presets.
One frame of digital breakup
Replace a completely corrupted frame without touching healthy neighbors.
PrepareUse a clip with a single blocky/pixelated frame and stable motion around it.
- 01
Place the playhead exactly on the corrupt frame and enable Replace This Frame.
- 02
Compare From Previous and From Next at 100% Global Blend.
- 03
If motion reads as a hold or jump, try Blend Prev/Next and then Optical Flow.
- 04
Play at least N-2…N+2 and choose the least noticeable temporal transition.
The corrupt frame disappears while motion speed and trajectory across N-1→N→N+1 remain plausible.
Damaged film frame in an almost static shot
Use the simplest source without introducing unnecessary interpolation.
PrepareChoose a locked-off or very slow shot with one scratch/flash/damage frame where replacing the whole image is simpler than local repair.
- 01
Mark only the damaged frame with Replace This Frame.
- 02
Start with From Previous, then check From Next.
- 03
Compare texture/grain and exposure in adjacent frames and choose the side with less temporal mismatch.
- 04
Keep Global Blend at 100% if the full replacement is already invisible.
The repair reads like a normal neighboring frame without unnecessary ghosting or flow artifacts.
Moderate motion through a bad frame
Preserve motion cadence without a duplicate or double edge.
PrepareUse a shot where the subject moves visibly between N-1 and N+1 but motion remains smooth enough to interpolate.
- 01
First observe the hold from From Previous and the early jump from From Next.
- 02
Switch to Blend Prev/Next and look for ghosting or a double edge.
- 03
Switch to Optical Flow and inspect the moving subject shape and background edges.
- 04
Choose the most stable result in playback, not the most sophisticated method.
There is no visible stop, double silhouette, or obvious flow deformation between neighboring frames.
When only a local area is damaged
Recognize the boundary of Frame Replacer and switch to patch-based repair when appropriate.
PrepareUse a frame with a small dust spot or blemish while the rest of the image is healthy and contains useful motion.
- 01
Temporarily try Frame Replacer and note how much healthy image it must replace.
- 02
Compare against Dust Buster or Dead Pixel Fixer based on the defect type.
- 03
Keep whole-frame replacement only if local repair is objectively worse or more complex.
- 04
Review the final shot in motion after choosing the tool.
The tool matches the problem scale: a local defect does not force an unnecessary reconstruction of the whole frame.
05CHOOSE THE RIGHT REPAIR SCALE
Whole frame, local patch, detector or temporal stabilization?
Revival has several tools because “damage” is not one problem. Choose by spatial extent, persistence and temporal behavior before tuning controls.
| FX | What it changes | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Replacer | Whole-frame replacement for an isolated corrupt or damaged frame. | When the defect lasts one frame and replacing the whole image from neighboring temporal information is the sensible choice. |
| Dust Buster ↗ | Manual local patches with temporal, Spatial, and Clone sources. | When transient dirt or scratches are local and the healthy image should remain untouched. |
| Dead Pixel Fixer ↗ | Local repair for persistent fixed blemishes. | When the defect stays at the same image coordinate across many frames. |
| Automatic Dirt Removal ↗ | Automatic transient-dirt detection with optical-flow repair. | When many short dust or tape hits are scattered through the material and manual marking would be inefficient. |
| Deflicker ↗ | Temporal stabilization of brightness/chroma flicker rather than frame replacement. | When the problem is brightness or color variation over time while the frame structure itself remains intact. |
06DIAGNOSE THE TEMPORAL ARTIFACT
Hold, ghost and warp point to different reconstruction failures.
Do not solve every symptom with Global Blend. First identify which temporal model produced the artifact, then change that model.
01The repair looks like a brief pause in motion.+
Likely cause: From Previous or From Next duplicates a neighboring frame while inter-frame motion is clearly visible.
Fix: Try the opposite one-sided source, then Blend Prev/Next and Optical Flow. Judge the result in playback, not from a single repaired still.
02A double edge or translucent ghost appears.+
Likely cause: Blend Prev/Next is mixing two noticeably different subject positions.
Fix: Use From Previous/From Next if one neighbor is close enough, or test Optical Flow.
03Optical Flow bends a face, hand, or background edge.+
Likely cause: Motion estimation is ambiguous because of occlusion, crossing edges, deformation, or heavy blur.
Fix: Do not try to hide the warp with Global Blend. Return to Blend Prev/Next or a one-sided duplicate and compare temporal artifacts against geometric artifacts.
04The replacement is visible through grain, lighting, or exposure even though motion nearly matches.+
Likely cause: Neighboring frames differ not only in position but also in texture, noise, flicker, or exposure.
Fix: Check the other neighbor and wider temporal context. With obvious flicker, stabilize temporal brightness with an appropriate tool first, then revisit replacement.
05Global Blend has to be reduced almost to zero for the repair to stop drawing attention.+
Likely cause: The Replacement Method is producing a fundamentally poor frame; wet/dry merely reduces the visibility of the error along with the useful repair.
Fix: Return Blend to 100%, choose another method, confirm the target frame, and only then dose the mix again.
06The effect changes too much image content for a tiny defect.+
Likely cause: Frame Replacer is being used for a local problem even though its unit of repair is the whole frame.
Fix: Switch to Dust Buster, Dead Pixel Fixer, Automatic Dirt Removal, or Patch Replacer depending on defect persistence and type.
07BEFORE DELIVERY
Approve the transition, not just the repaired still.
The repair is successful only when the broken frame disappears without creating a new cadence, geometry, ghosting or texture problem.
08FAQ
Practical Frame Replacer questions.
Does Frame Replacer replace only one frame?
It is designed for frame-specific repair. Replace This Frame selects the current frame and automatically creates a keyframe at that position. With multiple bad frames, each one should be marked and reviewed separately.
Which Replacement Method should I try first?
Start with From Previous and From Next because they are easiest to interpret. If motion exposes the duplicate, compare Blend Prev/Next and Optical Flow. Make the final choice in playback and against neighboring frames.
Is Optical Flow always better than Blend Prev/Next?
No. Optical Flow can preserve moderate motion better, but occlusion, fast motion, deformation, and motion blur can produce warping. A simple blend or even a duplicate can sometimes look cleaner.
What is Global Blend for?
It is the final mix between the replacement and the original. Adjust it after choosing the correct reconstruction method. Heavy Blend reduction should not substitute for fixing ghosting or flow warping.
What is better for local dust—Frame Replacer or Dust Buster?
Usually Dust Buster because it changes only a small patch. Frame Replacer makes sense when the whole frame is damaged or a full-frame temporal replacement is simpler and more reliable than local repair.
Can it repair several consecutive corrupt frames?
You can mark separate frames, but the longer the damaged run, the less clean temporal context each repair has and the higher the risk of repeated or warped motion. For a longer gap, compare other retiming/interpolation or restoration workflows.
Sources and boundaries
The page separates native interface evidence from the teaching model. Control names and visible UI states come from five Resolve 21 captures in the project archive. The single-frame purpose, automatic keyframe behavior and four Replacement Method definitions were cross-checked against the current Resolve 21 Revival manual. The animated temporal lab is an independent deterministic proxy and does not claim Blackmagic optical-flow math or renderer equivalence.
Verify Studio availability and any UI differences in the Resolve build you actually use. The exercises are explicit training procedures around documented controls and captured states; they were not certified by a live Resolve render during this site-only update.
