Object Removal.

Do not hide the object.
Reconstruct what was behind it.

Object Removal is a reconstruction workflow, not a magic eraser. Give it a precise tracked matte, choose the scene model that matches motion, search only as far as useful background evidence exists, and escalate to a Clean Plate when the shot simply does not contain the missing pixels.

01WHAT OBJECT REMOVAL ACTUALLY DOES

The missing background must come from somewhere.

The effect succeeds when the matte is honest, the motion model matches the shot and enough clean background evidence exists in time or in a supplied plate. It fails when one of those assumptions is false.

First give the algorithm the right hole.

Object Removal does not identify the unwanted subject for you; it receives a removal region from the matte/mask. If the matte includes extra wall, ground, or a neighboring object, Resolve must reconstruct those areas too. If the edge is too tight, a halo or part of a shadow may remain. Show Mask Overlay is therefore the first test of the whole job, not a cosmetic overlay.

Reconstruction only works where evidence exists.

The effect's main strength is temporal evidence: background hidden by the subject in the current frame must become visible elsewhere or be represented by a clean plate. Search Range changes how far Resolve can look for that information. If camera/subject geometry changes too much or the background is never revealed, increasing range does not create missing pixels; use a different Scene Mode, an Internal/External plate, or a more manual repair.

Analysis and blending are different stages.

Scene Mode, Analysis Boundary, and Assume No Motion influence motion interpretation and the analysis region; Blend Mode acts later, after replacement information has been found. Gray or obviously wrong content inside the matte is therefore not a reason to immediately switch Linear/Adaptive. Fix analysis/search first. Blend Mode matters when the source is logically correct but the brightness, color, or edge transition still looks pasted in.

Object Removal can look convincing on one still and fall apart three frames later because of parallax, occlusion, texture crawl, or lighting changes. Check subject entry, the middle of the removal, intersections with other detail, and exit. Show Scene Mask Overlay and Show Clean Plate help isolate the stage that failed, but the final criterion is continuous playback and the delivery encode.

02THE ACTUAL PANEL

Separate mask, analysis, render, plate and final mix.

Eight native captures anchor every visible control family and all three key dropdowns. The values in the full-panel capture document one state of Resolve, not recommended starting values for every shot.

01 · MASK + ANALYSIS

Define the object and calculate the scene.

Show Mask Overlay

Displays the region Object Removal treats as the subject to remove. It is a Viewer diagnostic for checking the tracked matte, edge softness, and whether too much background has been included.

CheckCheck the whole shot, especially motion blur, shadows, and crossings with other detail. The matte must describe the real intervention region over time.

Scene Analysis

Runs the calculated analysis of temporal scene information used to reconstruct hidden background. The result depends on current Analysis settings, so after materially changing Assume No Motion, Scene Mode, or Analysis Boundary, reassess the calculation.

CheckDo not judge one frame: inspect the beginning, middle, occlusions, and end of the action. If the result fails only in certain temporal sections, that matters more than a pretty hero frame.

Assume No Motion

Simplifies the scene for a locked-off camera with static background where the unwanted subject provides most of the motion. It is a motion assumption, not a universal quality/performance switch.

CheckDo not enable it for pans, handheld drift, dolly moves, zooms, or meaningful parallax. A wrong motion assumption can produce a convincing still but unstable temporal fill.

02 · SCENE MODEL

Choose the motion model and local context width.

Scene Mode · Background / Boundary / Object

Background is the general starting model for a subject moving across background. Boundary concentrates analysis near the matte edge and can help when local surroundings are more coherent than the full scene. Object is intended for an unwanted feature moving with a surface/background, such as a mark on glass or a surface in a moving shot.

CheckIf Background is distracted by unrelated whole-frame motion, try Boundary. If the unwanted feature is effectively attached to a moving surface, test Object.

Analysis Boundary

Defines the width of the boundary analysis region around the removal area. It changes how much local surrounding context participates in motion/match estimation, especially in Scene Mode = Boundary.

CheckA region that is too narrow may lack structure; one that is too wide may include unrelated motion, parallax, or lighting. Tune to observed scene geometry rather than to a habitual number.

Show Scene Mask Overlay

Displays the diagnostic scene mask/analysis region so you can understand what part of the image Resolve is using for the selected Scene Mode and Analysis Boundary.

CheckUse the overlay before changing Search Range. If the analysis region itself does not match the task, increasing temporal distance usually expands the search under the wrong model.

03 · RENDER

Find usable source first, then blend it.

Search Range

Defines the temporal distance in frames over which Resolve searches for background information for reconstruction. A larger range provides more candidates but also reaches frames with greater differences in perspective, lighting, focus, and occlusion.

CheckStart with the smallest range that reaches the moment the background is revealed. If the background is never visible, endlessly increasing range does not replace a Clean Plate.

Blend Mode · Linear / Adaptive Blend

Linear performs direct integration of the replacement patch. Adaptive Blend attempts to adapt the seam to surrounding image characteristics and can better hide brightness/color discontinuity. It is an integration strategy, not an alternate background search.

CheckIf content inside the matte is wrong, return to analysis/search. If the content is correct but the edge looks pasted, compare Linear and Adaptive Blend in motion.

04 · CLEAN PLATE

When temporal evidence is insufficient, build or supply a plate.

Clean Plate Source · Gray Image / Internal / External

Gray Image represents the absence of usable clean-plate texture and is useful as a diagnostic baseline. Internal uses available scene information to construct a plate inside the effect. External accepts a prepared clean background through the OFX input, giving the most control when the needed background is never revealed in the source shot.

CheckDo not choose Internal automatically. If the shot contains no clean information behind the subject, an External plate is often more honest and stable than forcing temporal analysis to invent missing content.

Build Clean Plate

Builds the clean plate according to the selected source/workflow. It is a separate calculated stage, so after changing the source or meaningful analysis logic, reassess the plate rather than assuming the previous result is still valid.

CheckAfter building, first enable Show Clean Plate and inspect the reconstruction itself without the distraction of the final composite. Only then judge blending with the original image.

Show Clean Plate

Displays the clean plate directly, separating two possible failure sources: the plate itself is bad, or the plate is good but its final integration/edge is poor.

CheckLook for repeated texture, smearing, incorrect perspective, and missing structural edges. If those problems already exist in the plate, Global Blend and Adaptive Blend cannot fix the foundation.

05 · FINAL MIX

Mix only an already-correct reconstruction.

Global Blend

Controls the overall contribution of the calculated Object Removal result to the final image. Full effect is useful for honest diagnosis, while a lower Blend can soften the intervention when original content remains partly useful.

CheckIf Blend must be reduced substantially because of wrong texture, seams, or temporal instability, return to the matte, Scene Mode, Search Range, or Clean Plate. Final mix should not become a hidden repair stage.

The most important distinction is causal: Scene Analysis/Search Range determines whether usable replacement information exists; Blend Mode and Global Blend only decide how an already-calculated result is integrated. If the content is wrong, blending is the wrong stage to fix first.

03EVIDENCE-FIRST WORKFLOW

Do not turn Search Range into a substitute for missing information.

The efficient path is matte → scene model → Scene Analysis → smallest useful Search Range → blend → Clean Plate only when necessary → playback/delivery QC.

Track the smallest honest matte

The matte tells Object Removal what must disappear. Include the subject and necessary shadow/motion-blur footprint, but avoid unrelated background. Verify it through the whole shot with Show Mask Overlay.

Teaching workflow, not a literal Resolve node graph. The causal order matters: define the removal region → choose the scene model → calculate evidence → find usable background → build/supply a plate when necessary → approve motion and delivery.

04BUILD IT IN RESOLVE

Four exercises that force different reconstruction decisions.

Use your own footage and treat these as diagnostic procedures around the documented controls, not as magic presets. The acceptance test is temporal stability in motion.

01

Pedestrian in a locked-off shot

Remove a moving subject over static background with the simplest useful analysis.

PrepareUse a locked-off shot where a pedestrian crosses a wall/road and the background is fully revealed before or after.

  1. 01

Draw a tight tracked matte and check Show Mask Overlay through the whole pass.

  2. 02

Enable Assume No Motion only after confirming that the camera/background are actually static.

  3. 03

Run Scene Analysis and keep Search Range minimal once the required background is found.

  4. 04

Check Linear, then Adaptive Blend only if a seam is visible; approve the result in playback.

Acceptance check

The subject disappears without texture crawl, halo, or brightness jumps, while the background remains stationary and plausible through the whole range.

02

Small object with a moving camera

Preserve parallax and choose an analysis model that does not confuse local background with whole-frame motion.

PrepareUse a handheld/pan shot with a small unwanted object surrounded by readable local geometry.

  1. 01

Leave Assume No Motion off and start with Background.

  2. 02

If whole-frame motion interferes, switch to Boundary and tune Analysis Boundary to the surrounding structure.

  3. 03

Inspect Show Scene Mask Overlay, then run Scene Analysis with a modest Search Range.

  4. 04

Look for edge swim and perspective mismatch in playback; do not hide them with Global Blend before fixing analysis.

Acceptance check

The replacement follows local background motion and perspective without visible slipping relative to the shot.

03

Sticker or mark on a moving surface

Use Scene Mode = Object when the unwanted feature moves together with the background surface itself.

PrepareUse a mark/sticker on glass, a vehicle, or another surface that changes position with the camera/scene.

  1. 01

Track the matte with the mark and inspect its edge/occlusions.

  2. 02

Compare Background and Object while judging the scene mask and reconstructed texture stability.

  3. 03

Tune Search Range to moments where the surface texture is actually available without the mark.

  4. 04

Check texture continuity frame-by-frame and at playback speed.

Acceptance check

Surface texture remains attached to the surface without a floating clone, double edge, or repeating pattern.

04

Background never reveals: External Clean Plate

Avoid forcing temporal analysis to invent missing background by supplying a controlled plate.

PrepareChoose a shot where the subject hides the same background region throughout the usable range, but a clean source can be built manually or from another take.

  1. 01

Prepare a clean source with matching perspective, exposure, and texture.

  2. 02

Choose Clean Plate Source = External and feed the source through the OFX input.

  3. 03

Use Show Clean Plate to inspect geometry/texture before final integration.

  4. 04

After the plate is correct, compare Linear/Adaptive and only then dose Global Blend.

Acceptance check

The removed region reads as a continuation of the real scene rather than a smeared or repeating temporal guess.

05CHOOSE THE RIGHT REPAIR MODEL

Automatic reconstruction is powerful — and not always the shortest path.

Choose by what is actually damaged: a scene region, a small blemish, a donor-patch opportunity or a whole corrupted frame. The right tool reduces ambiguity before any slider is touched.

Patch Replacer ↗Direct source-target patch with a controlled donor region.Nearby clean texture is easier to clone/track manually than reconstruct automatically.
Dead Pixel Fixer ↗Small local patch for sensor/dead-pixel/blemish defects. The defect is tiny and does not require scene-scale reconstruction.
Dust Buster ↗Local restoration patch with temporal/spatial source strategies.Dust, dirt, or local film damage where a small patch is more efficient than a large object matte.
Frame Replacer ↗Replacement of one complete frame from neighboring temporal states. The entire frame is damaged rather than a local object inside it.

06DIAGNOSE THE FAILED STAGE

Gray fill, seams and swimming texture are different failures.

Do not answer every artifact with more Search Range or less Global Blend. Identify whether the failure is the matte, motion model, temporal evidence, plate or final integration.

01Gray or empty fill appears inside the matte

Likely cause: The current Scene Mode/Search Range provides no usable background information, or the analysis region does not match the scene.
Fix: Inspect Show Scene Mask Overlay, Scene Mode, and Search Range; if the background is objectively never revealed, move to an Internal/External Clean Plate.

02Background is found but a seam remains around the object

Likely cause: The replacement source is logically correct, but edge/brightness/color integration is mismatched or the matte edge is poorly prepared.
Fix: Fix matte/edge softness first, then compare Linear and Adaptive Blend; do not increase Search Range when the source is already correct.

03Texture swims or changes frame to frame

Likely cause: Temporal candidates differ too much in perspective/motion, Scene Mode misrepresents motion, or Search Range is unnecessarily large.
Fix: Reduce Search Range, compare Background/Boundary/Object, and judge high-frequency texture in playback. Use a controlled External plate if needed.

04A locked-off shot becomes unstable after analysis

Likely cause: Resolve is modeling motion that the background does not actually contain, or the matte includes moving/shadow regions beyond the subject.
Fix: Inspect the matte, then test Assume No Motion only if the camera/background are genuinely static. Re-run analysis and compare temporal stability.

05The Clean Plate itself contains smearing or wrong geometry

Likely cause: The Internal plate was built from insufficient/unsuitable evidence, or the External source mismatches perspective/exposure.
Fix: Enable Show Clean Plate and fix the source before final blending. Prepare an External plate separately; for Internal, return to analysis/search and rebuild.

06The result looks good as a still but fails in the delivery encode

Likely cause: Temporal crawl, a fine edge halo, or moving texture was missed when judging a single frame or Viewer scale.
Fix: Check full-speed playback, a 100% crop of the problem area, and the final codec. Return to Scene Mode/Search Range if needed rather than merely reducing Global Blend.

07BEFORE DELIVERY

Approve reconstruction, motion and the final codec.

A clean still is not enough. The removal must remain geometrically, texturally and temporally plausible across the whole intervention and through the delivered encode.

08FAQ

Practical Object Removal questions.

When does Object Removal work best?

When the subject is relatively small, the matte can be tracked reliably, and the hidden background becomes visible in other frames or is available as a clean plate. Less unknown information and less severe parallax generally produce more predictable reconstruction.

What is Assume No Motion for?

It is an assumption for a locked-off camera with static background. It is useful when the unwanted subject moves, but it should not be treated as a general quality/performance toggle on a moving-camera shot.

What should I do if the matte fills with gray?

Check Scene Mode, Show Scene Mask Overlay, and Search Range first. Gray fill usually means suitable background information was not found. If it does not exist anywhere in the source shot, use a Clean Plate instead of endlessly increasing the range.

When is Adaptive Blend better than Linear?

When replacement content is correct but the direct seam is visible in brightness/color/edge. It is not universally better: compare both in playback and do not use Adaptive as a substitute for poor analysis.

When do I need an External Clean Plate?

When the required background is never revealed in usable frames, the Internal plate is unstable, or you have a better source from another take/manual reconstruction. External provides a controlled foundation instead of guessing missing scene content.

Object Removal or Patch Replacer?

Object Removal is useful when background can be reconstructed over time; Patch Replacer is better when a clean donor texture already exists nearby and you want direct source/target control. Strong parallax is often faster to solve with controlled repairs or an external plate.
