Surface Tracker.
Define the surface.
Solve the deformation. Choose the result.
Surface Tracker is a Studio-only mesh tracker for flexible or deformable surfaces. Its logic is explicitly staged: Bounds defines one physical patch, Mesh decides how that patch is sampled, Track solves motion through time, and Result turns the solve into an insert, matte, stabilized cleanup space, rewarp or composite. The expensive mistake is to treat those tabs as independent controls; the useful mental model is a causal pipeline.
Bounds · holes · range
Mesh · Motion · Rigidity
Warp · Matte · Stabilize · Rewarp
Fastest debugging rule: if the mesh itself is wrong, stay in Bounds/Mesh/Track. If the mesh is right but the insert is wrong, move to Result. Do not hide solve errors under Softness, Positioning or Composite Type.
What to check: Review difficult frames and folds: this demo cannot score an actual Resolve track.
This animated mesh illustrates geometric motion and possible failure modes. It does NOT track a real clip, predict Resolve solve quality, reproduce proprietary warp math, or expose Resolve slider ranges. A tracking key excludes regions during analysis; it does not automatically hide the occluder in the final composite.
12 native Resolve captures + an explicitly labeled mesh-solve teaching proxy
12 native views · 24 parameter explanations · 4 exercises01A FOUR-STAGE CAUSAL SOLVE
Bounds define the problem. Mesh describes it. Track solves it. Result only consumes that solve.
That separation is why Surface Tracker can follow cloth and skin better than a rigid planar transform — and why upstream mistakes survive all the way to the final composite.
Define the surface before solving it
Surface Tracker is built left to right: Bounds defines what counts as one surface; Mesh defines how that surface is sampled. Errors here propagate into Track and later appear as drift, fold error, or a floating insert.
Mesh Rigidity is a deformation model, not a quality slider
A rigid mesh holds shape well on a comparatively firm surface but resists real folds. An overly flexible mesh follows cloth or skin more freely but can start treating noise and local tracking errors as genuine deformation.
Result selects the job, not a “better output”
Warp, matte generation, stabilization and rewarp reuse the same solve for different purposes. After a good track, choose Output for the actual job, then tune placement/compositing instead of cycling Output as if it were a quality preset.
Blackmagic recommends using Surface Tracker as a separate FX Node, especially when the overlay contains built-in transparency, because the extra inputs — including alpha routing — are then available. This is composite architecture, not an Inspector cosmetic.
02TWELVE NATIVE VIEWS · ACTUAL UI SEMANTICS
Read Surface Tracker in the same order Resolve asks you to work.
The supplied native captures illustrate all four main stages and their important menus; additional controls hidden in the captures are explained from the Resolve 21 manual. Two old filenames do not reflect the UI shown, so captions follow the visible panel.
01 / Bounds
Describe one surface and exclude everything that does not belong to it.
- Boundary
Reports the state of the current boundary. A too-few-points warning means the outline is not ready for a stable mesh.
CheckDo not move to Mesh until the outline describes the surface sensibly.
- + Bound · + Hole · Delete · Clear All
+ Bound adds another outer region, + Hole excludes an inner region; Delete and Clear All maintain the markup.
CheckDo not cross unrelated objects or background just to capture more texture.
- Tracked Range In / Out
Shows the clip range that already contains tracking data. Changing bounds or mesh can require a new solve.
CheckAfter structural changes, make sure old tracking data is not mistaken for the current solve.
02 / Mesh
Make the mesh dense enough for deformation without making it gratuitously heavy.
- Point Locations
Automatic distributes points adaptively; Uniform Grid creates a regular mesh.
Automatic · Uniform Grid
CheckOn weak or repetitive texture, compare both on real motion rather than judging the still mesh.
- Point Number Limit
Caps the number of mesh points and therefore the upper complexity of the solve.
CheckMore points do not guarantee a better track; weak extra points can make the solve harder.
- Minimum Point Spacing
Prevents neighboring points from being packed too tightly.
CheckKeep enough density for meaningful folds and curves without turning the mesh into noise.
- Regenerate Mesh
Rebuilds the mesh after point-distribution rules change.
CheckAfter regeneration, judge the track again — not merely whether the mesh looks tidy.
- Horizontal Spacing
Sets horizontal spacing of regular mesh points in Uniform Grid. It is distinct from Automatic’s Minimum Point Spacing.
CheckChange independently from Vertical Spacing and inspect coverage across folds.
- Vertical Spacing
Sets vertical spacing of the Uniform Grid points.
CheckVerify the grid still represents elongated deformations.
03 / Track
The solve should follow the surface without hiding a wrong motion model.
- Interaction Overlays
Show / Hide On Drag / Hide control the interaction overlays in the Viewer.
Show · Hide On Drag · Hide
CheckHide overlays for visual inspection only; a clean Viewer does not prove the solve is good.
- Motion Range
Sets the expected movement range the tracker should search between frames.
CheckToo little can lose fast motion; too much makes the search less focused.
- Mesh Rigidity
Controls how strongly the mesh should preserve its shape instead of deforming locally.
CheckMatch the physical surface: cloth, skin and rigid material need different freedom.
- Quality
Faster speeds iteration; Better performs a more thorough solve at higher cost.
Faster · Better
CheckDo not try to cure bad Bounds/Mesh by switching Faster → Better. Fix the model first.
- Tracking Keyframes
Provides keyframe control around the tracking behavior over time.
CheckInspect transitions around a problem frame, not only the frame where a correction was made.
- Track Direction / Stop
Controls track to start / end, tracking from the current frame and Stop.
CheckStart from a readable reference frame; check both directions and the tracked range.
- Key 1 — tracking exclusion
Temporary tracking mask: white is considered for analysis and black is excluded. Invert a foreground-object mask to hide the obstruction from the solve.
CheckAfter solving, disconnect the temporary tracking mask from the Key input before final alpha compositing.
04 / Result
Turn the solve into a specific warp, matte, stabilize/rewarp or composite operation.
- Output
Six distinct modes: Warp Input 2 Onto 1; Warp Input 2 Onto Blank; Warp Input 1’s Alpha; Create Mesh Alpha Mask; Stabilize-Warp Input 1; Rewarp Stabilized Clip. Their required inputs and outputs differ.
Warp Input 2 Onto 1 · Warp Input 2 Onto Blank · Warp Input 1's Alpha · Create Mesh Alpha Mask · Stabilize-Warp Input 1 · Rewarp Stabilized Clip
CheckDefine the job first. A wrong Output with a perfect track still looks like a broken Surface Tracker.
- Overlay / Alpha Source
First Frame, Reference Frame and Each Frame select the temporal source of overlay/alpha.
First Frame · Reference Frame · Each Frame
CheckFor a time-varying insert, do not keep a static source merely because the reference frame looks good.
- Contract / Expand · Softness
Refine the tracked surface/overlay edge: Contract/Expand moves the boundary; Softness feathers the transition.
CheckDo not use huge Softness to hide bad tracking; the edge may soften but drift remains.
- Motion Blur
Adds motion treatment to the warped result so the insert does not look unnaturally frozen against the moving surface.
CheckJudge it in playback and after render; a still frame can make intentional smear look like a defect.
- Go To Reference · Set To Current · Reference Frame
Reference Frame defines the frame used to align the overlay; the commands jump to it or set the current frame as reference.
CheckChoose a frame where the surface is readable and not heavily occluded.
- Positioning
Chooses how the overlay is placed: Sliders, Interactive - Canvas or Interactive - Pins.
Sliders · Interactive - Canvas · Interactive - Pins
CheckDo not compensate a bad solve with placement. First verify that the mesh itself follows the surface.
- Antialiasing
Controls antialiasing of the final warped edge/detail.
CheckInspect small text and fine overlay lines at 100% view.
- Composite Type · Opacity
Composite Type sets the blend operation; Opacity sets the final contribution of the composited result.
Normal · Add · Subtract · Difference · Multiply · Screen · Overlay · Hard Light · Softlight · Darken
CheckSolve geometry and edge treatment in Normal/100% first, then stylize the blend.
Studio licensing is not guessed from the Inspector: Blackmagic’s feature matrix lists Surface Tracker as a desktop Studio feature. The page also keeps the separate-FX-node recommendation visible because transparent overlays may require the additional alpha input.
03A REPEATABLE SURFACE-SOLVE WORKFLOW
Bounds → Mesh → Track → Output → Placement → Composite.
This order keeps tracking decisions separate from compositing decisions and makes failures much easier to localize.
Define one physical surface
Draw the tracked region inside the surface you actually want to solve. Add holes or additional bounds when occlusions or excluded regions demand them. If the boundary itself is wrong, every later stage inherits that mistake.
This is an editorial decision workflow, not Blackmagic’s internal tracking graph. It deliberately separates surface definition, mesh sampling, motion solving, output selection, overlay placement and final compositing so a failure can be localized before another stage is used to hide it.

04SIGNALS, ALPHA AND THE SIX OUTPUTS
One tracker. Six genuinely different results.
Switch Result Output to see what enters and leaves the Color FX node. For a transparent logo, connect RGB 2 and Key 2. For cleanup, stabilize first, retouch, then rewarp with the original tracking data.
RESULT OUTPUT / SIGNAL ROUTING
Where each signal actually goes
Warps the RGB 2 overlay along the mesh and composites it over the original RGB 1 footage.
RGB 1 is the footage, RGB 2 the logo/graphic, Key 2 its transparency.
The insert must adhere to folds; if a PNG has alpha, inspect the second Key input.
This is an educational routing diagram for the Color page, not a screenshot or a complete listing of Fusion-node ports. For the live node choose a separate FX Node, especially when the overlay uses transparency. The final appearance and routing should be verified in your installed Resolve version.
Workflow verified against the DaVinci Resolve 21 Surface Tracker manual. See the original Inspector controls above; the routing graphic is intentionally instructional, not an app screenshot.
05FOUR REAL SURFACE-TRACKING DECISIONS
Cloth inserts, deforming screens, cleanup/rewarp and tracked mattes fail in different places.
These are procedures, not presets. Surface texture, occlusion, motion speed and the final output decide the useful settings.
Logo on deforming clothing
Make an insert follow cloth folds instead of floating like a planar card.
- 01
In Bounds, isolate one surface; exclude arms, straps and background with additional Bound/Hole regions when needed.
- 02
Build the Mesh with enough density for the important folds. On weak texture, compare Automatic with Uniform Grid.
- 03
In Track, start with Faster, tune Motion Range and Mesh Rigidity, then re-check difficult frames in Better.
- 04
In Result, choose Warp Input 2 Onto 1, align the overlay on a reference frame, and only after the warp is stable tune Softness, Motion Blur and Compositing.
Replacing a deforming display or package
Keep graphics attached to a surface that changes perspective and shape at the same time.
- 01
Do not include two independent planes in one Bound; Surface Tracker expects one connected surface.
- 02
Make the mesh regular enough that edge bending does not depend on a couple of accidental high-contrast points.
- 03
Inspect the solve around occlusion entry/exit and do not switch to Better until the basic model works.
- 04
In Result, validate geometry in Normal at Opacity 1.0 first, then add the intended Composite Type.
Stabilize → cleanup → rewarp
Temporarily flatten/stabilize the surface, perform paint or retouch, then restore the original deformation.
- 01
Get a stable surface solve before building the cleanup branch.
- 02
Use Stabilize-Warp Input 1 in Result to create a convenient space for cleanup.
- 03
Perform retouch in the stabilized space without changing the reference geometry unnecessarily.
- 04
Restore the original motion with Rewarp Stabilized Clip and inspect edges and texture in full playback.
- 05
Use Gallery Still → Append Node Graph to duplicate the tracker with its solve. Set the copy to Rewarp Stabilized Clip; original footage goes to RGB 1, retouched stabilized content to RGB 2.
Mesh Alpha Mask for a surface-aware matte
Use the mesh not for an insert but as a deforming tracked mask.
- 01
Bounds should describe the intended matte region, not merely outline the whole object aesthetically.
- 02
Tune Mesh and Track as rigorously as for an insert; a drifting matte is just as visible as drifting graphics.
- 03
Choose Create Mesh Alpha Mask and judge Contract/Expand plus Softness against the real background.
- 04
QC in motion and on difficult edges; hair, folds and occlusions reveal errors fastest.
06CHOOSE THE RIGHT TRANSFORM / TRACKING TOOL
Use Surface Tracker when the surface itself deforms — not merely because something moves.
Choosing by motion type before opening the Inspector saves more time than rescuing the wrong tracker later.
| FX | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Surface Tracker | Deforming surfaces: cloth, skin, flexible packaging, surface-aware inserts, mattes and stabilize/rewarp. |
| Match Move ↗ | When point/feature tracking is enough and you need transform/compositing motion without mesh deformation. |
| Transform ↗ | When no tracking is needed at all: ordinary position/scale/rotation/perspective-style geometry. |
| Picture In Picture ↗ | When you need a designed inset card rather than a surface solve. |
07FIND THE STAGE THAT FAILED
Drift, over-rigid deformation, swimming texture and bad edges require different fixes.
Debug upstream first. A clean Result cannot compensate for a bad surface model, and a perfect mesh does not need to be re-tracked because Composite Type is wrong.
01The mesh drifts after only a few frames+
Likely cause: Bounds include unrelated motion, the mesh is too weak/noisy, or Motion Range does not match the real movement.
Fix: Return to Bounds/Mesh, exclude unrelated regions, then tune Motion Range. Use Better only after the model itself is fixed.
02The insert looks too rigid and ignores folds+
Likely cause: Mesh Rigidity is too high or the mesh does not describe local deformation well enough.
Fix: Reduce Rigidity gradually and rebuild the mesh if needed; make sure added flexibility does not introduce local jitter.
03The mesh swims across texture even though the object is nearly rigid+
Likely cause: Rigidity is too low, too many points sit on weak texture, or the motion search is too permissive.
Fix: Increase Rigidity, simplify the mesh and narrow Motion Range to a plausible value.
04Geometry is good but the insert edge looks dirty+
Likely cause: The problem is now in Result: Contract/Expand, Softness, Antialiasing or alpha source does not fit the material.
Fix: Do not re-track the shot. Inspect edge controls, Overlay / Alpha Source and alpha routing separately from the solve.
05Stabilize/rewarp returns a double edge or jump+
Likely cause: The cleanup branch changed reference geometry, a poor Reference Frame was chosen, or the original solve is unstable.
Fix: Check the reference frame, compare stabilized and rewarped branches, and return to tracking only if the error already exists before cleanup.
06Composite Type seems to do nothing+
Likely cause: The overlay barely differs from the base, Opacity is low, or Output is not producing the intended insert/composite.
Fix: Return to Normal + Opacity 1.0, verify Output and inputs, then re-enable the blend mode.
08BEFORE DELIVERY
Approve the solve before the composite, and the composite before the encode.
A tracked insert can look convincing on one reference frame and still reveal drift, edge shimmer or a rewarp discontinuity in motion.
09FAQ
Practical Surface Tracker questions.
How is Surface Tracker different from a planar tracker?
Planar tracking primarily assumes a rigid plane. Surface Tracker uses a mesh and is designed for surfaces that actually change shape: cloth, skin, flexible packaging and folds.
Automatic or Uniform Grid — which is better?
There is no universal winner. Automatic is a good start; Uniform Grid can be more predictable on weak or uniform texture. Decide from the actual track, not the still mesh.
Should I start with Quality = Better?
Usually not. Faster lets you debug Bounds, Mesh, Motion Range and Rigidity quickly. Better is most useful after the solve structure is already correct.
Why use a separate FX Node?
Blackmagic recommends it for Surface Tracker, especially when the overlay has transparency, because a separate FX Node exposes the additional inputs including alpha.
Can Surface Tracker be used only as a mask?
Yes. Output = Create Mesh Alpha Mask turns the tracked mesh into a deforming alpha mask, after which Contract/Expand and Softness refine the edge.
How do I feed a transparent PNG overlay?
Use a separate FX Node: footage into RGB 1, the logo into RGB 2 and its alpha into Key 2. Validate the geometry in Normal/Opacity 1 before changing the blend mode.
Why does a tracking exclusion mask not remove the occluder?
The black areas are excluded from motion analysis only: this does not automatically roto the foreground object in the final composite. Use a separate matte/composite for the occluder and disconnect the temporary key after tracking.
How do I restore motion after stabilized cleanup?
Use Surface Tracker Stabilize-Warp Input 1 → cleanup → a copy of the same tracker set to Rewarp Stabilized Clip. Route the original to RGB 1 and cleaned stabilized image to RGB 2. The manual documents Gallery Still → Append Node Graph for preserving tracking data.
Why did tracking data disappear after editing Bounds or Mesh?
Changing Bounds or Mesh layout invalidates the previous solve. Re-track the new structure instead of trusting the previous mesh data.
