RESOLVE 21 · TRANSFORM · GEOMETRY / EDGE / COMPOSITE

Transform.

Choose the control model.
Build geometry. Then solve the edges.

Resolve FX Transform is broader than a basic clip transform: it offers Sliders, Interactive - Canvas, and Interactive - Pins, plus independent Width/Height, Pitch/Yaw, crop and edge shaping, Motion Blur, Edge Behaviour, Composite Type, alpha preview, and a final Global Blend. The key is order. Pick the interaction model before animation, establish geometry before edge filling, and composite only after the transformed image is already correct.

01 / MODE

Sliders · Canvas · Pins

02 / SHAPE

Position · Zoom · Pitch/Yaw

03 / FINISH

Edge · Alpha · Composite · Blend

Fastest debugging rule: set Composite Type to Normal, Global Blend to full, and Edge Behaviour to Transparent. If the image is still wrong, fix geometry. If geometry is right, restore edge handling, then compositing, then blend.

Crop, edges and motion

Crop and perspective are pedagogical approximations, not Resolve slider ranges or pixel math. Motion Blur is only applied to animated motion.

Teaching visualization: interpolation, alpha, perspective, compositing and motion blur illustrate relationships but do not reproduce the exact OFX. Slider numbers are not Resolve presets. The Inspector captures below are original screenshots.

01MODE → GEOMETRY → EDGE → COMPOSITE

Transform is predictable when each layer solves only its own problem.

The most expensive mistakes come from compensating a geometry problem with edge fill or a composite problem with reduced Blend.

Control Mode is a workflow choice, not merely a UI view

Sliders, Interactive - Canvas, and Interactive - Pins solve the same broad problem through different interaction models. Sliders is best for precise repeatable values, Canvas for direct frame/corner manipulation in the Viewer, and Pins for point-based distortion. Blackmagic explicitly warns against treating the modes as seamless views of the same state; switching control methods can reset numeric adjustments, so choose the Control Mode before building the animation.

Geometry and edge handling are separate stages

Position X/Y, Zoom, Rotate, Width/Height, and Pitch/Yaw determine where the image plane sits and how it is shaped. Crop / Uncrop, Edge Softness, Edge Rounding, and Edge Behaviour then decide what its boundary looks like and how exposed areas are handled. If bad geometry is hidden first with Reflect or Replicate, later edge repeats and stretching become much harder to diagnose.

Motion Blur only makes sense relative to motion over time

Motion Blur does not repair static geometry and should not be the first step. Judge it after Position/Zoom/Rotate/Pitch/Yaw animation already reads cleanly without blur. Adding blur too early can hide keyframe jumps, a poor motion path, or abrupt perspective changes. Validate during playback and at the delivery frame rate rather than from a single still.

Composite Type changes how the result is mathematically combined, Preview Alpha helps diagnose transparency, and Global Blend doses the finished FX. None of them should compensate for incorrect Position, Width/Height, or Edge Behaviour. Establish geometry and edges first, choose compositing next, and set Blend only at the end.

02NINE NATIVE VIEWS · EXACT UI TERMS

Read Transform from Control Mode through Global Blend.

The supplied screenshots cover every Sliders-mode block and both key dropdowns. Interactive-only Canvas Keyframe and Reset Canvas are documented from Blackmagic’s official Control Mode description and clearly marked as manual-derived.

01 / Control Mode

Choose the interaction model first and avoid changing it mid-animation.

Control Mode

Selects Sliders, Interactive - Canvas, or Interactive - Pins. Sliders exposes numeric geometry while the interactive modes move manipulation into the Viewer.

Sliders · Interactive - Canvas · Interactive - Pins

CheckChoose the mode BEFORE keyframing: Blackmagic notes that switching from Sliders to Canvas/Pins resets numeric adjustments. To combine methods, stack two Transform effects.

Canvas Keyframe · Reset Canvas

Interactive modes only: Canvas Keyframe records Viewer geometry; Reset Canvas clears both interactive adjustments and the keyframes made there. These controls are not present in the original captures and are documented from the Resolve 21 manual.

CheckIf Canvas/Pins behaves unexpectedly, first confirm the intended Control Mode and whether old interactive keyframes remain.

02 / Position Controls

Build Sliders-mode geometry from placement to scale and perspective.

Position X · Position Y

Move the image horizontally and vertically within the output frame. This is the basic placement stage to settle before Width/Height or Pitch/Yaw.

CheckDo not solve framing with Edge Behaviour while the underlying Position is still wrong.

Zoom · Rotate

Zoom changes overall scale and Rotate spins the image in the frame plane. In animation these controls strongly affect the perceived motion path and pivot behavior.

CheckCheck the path without Motion Blur and add blur only after the motion itself is clean.

Width · Height

Scale the image independently by X/Y and intentionally alter proportions. They are not a replacement for Zoom; unequal values create anisotropic stretch.

CheckFor normal resizing keep Width/Height coordinated. Separate them only when stretch is intentional.

Pitch · Yaw

Create perspective-like rotation of the image plane around two axes. Large values quickly increase perspective distortion and expose source edges.

CheckAfter Pitch/Yaw immediately inspect edges, antialiasing, and fine-detail readability, especially on text and UI.

Flip Horizontal · Flip Vertical

Mirror the image along the corresponding axis inside the same Transform FX.

CheckAfter a flip, check text, logos, and directional cues: a technically correct mirror can still be editorially wrong.

03 / Image Adjustment + Animation

Shape the boundary first, then add temporal polish.

Crop / Uncrop

The supplied Inspector shows a Crop / Uncrop checkbox. The Resolve 21 manual describes Crop as exposing edge-cropping controls. Verify the implementation in your build: crop is not the same as Edge Behaviour, which fills regions beyond the original image.

CheckInspect the real alpha boundary using Preview Alpha. Crop Left/Right/Top/Bottom in the lab are a teaching mask, not claimed Inspector ranges.

Edge Softness · Edge Rounding

Edge Softness feathers the boundary and Edge Rounding rounds it. They shape the edge itself; filling exposed areas is the job of Edge Behaviour.

CheckOn small cards and after resize, excessive softness can consume a large fraction of the useful image.

Motion Blur

Adds blur to animated transformation. It is a temporal finishing control that must be judged in motion.

CheckDo not use blur to hide jerk, poor easing, or a jump between keyframes.

04 / Advanced Options

Decide what happens beyond the edges and how the result composites.

Edge Behaviour

Transparent leaves exposed areas transparent; Reflect, Wrap-Around, and Replicate fill them through different source continuation/repetition strategies.

Transparent · Reflect · Wrap-Around · Replicate

CheckLook for seams and repeated structures first: edge fill can look convincing on one frame and reveal itself in motion.

Composite Type

Chooses the blend operation for the Transform result. The native dropdown visibly includes Normal, Add, Subtract, Difference, Multiply, Screen, Overlay, Hard Light, Softlight, and Darken.

Normal · Add · Subtract · Difference · Multiply · Screen · Overlay · Hard Light · Softlight · Darken

CheckFor clean repositioning start with Normal. Choose other modes as deliberate compositing decisions, not as a way to repair brightness after incorrect geometry.

Antialiasing

Controls smoothing quality on transformed edges and fine diagonals. It matters most with Rotate, Pitch/Yaw, and strong resizing.

CheckInspect fine lines and text at 100% after final resize; Viewer fit can hide aliasing.

Preview Alpha

Displays the alpha result and helps separate transparency problems from RGB/composite problems.

CheckIf an edge looks wrong, inspect alpha by itself before returning to Composite Type.

05 / Global Blend

Dose the finished Transform only after all upstream decisions are correct.

Global Blend · Blend

Finally mixes the source state with the Transform result. It is an output mix, not a replacement for geometry, edge, or composite controls.

CheckIf Blend < 1 is being used to hide an artifact, return to the stage that creates the artifact.

A naming detail matters: the project capture uses the British UI spelling “Edge Behaviour,” while some editorial references use “Edge Behavior.” They refer to the same Resolve control; this page keeps the native Inspector spelling in the control table and accepts the US spelling only in explanatory copy/search terms.

03A REPEATABLE TRANSFORM WORKFLOW

Choose the interaction model first

Use Sliders for repeatable numeric geometry, Canvas for direct viewer manipulation, or Pins for point-based distortion. Make this decision before keyframing because changing modes is not a harmless UI switch.

This is an editorial decision workflow, not Blackmagic’s internal processing graph. Its purpose is to isolate failures in interaction mode, geometry, edge handling, animation, compositing, and final delivery instead of compensating one stage with another.

04FOUR REAL TRANSFORM DECISIONS

Push-in, pseudo-3D, Canvas layout, and alpha compositing fail for different reasons.

These are procedures, not presets. The framing, motion path, edge state, and delivery resolution decide the numbers.

01

Clean animated push-in without Fusion

Create a scale/reposition move with natural motion and clean edges.

  1. 01

Choose Sliders before animation and set the starting Position/Zoom.

  2. 02

Set ending Position/Zoom/Rotate keyframes and validate the path without Motion Blur first.

  3. 03

If edges become exposed, solve with framing or deliberate Edge Behaviour; do not hide the issue with Global Blend.

  4. 04

Only after the path is clean add Motion Blur and validate at the final codec/frame rate.

02

Pseudo-3D turn of a card or screen

Create a perspective-like turn without moving into Fusion 3D.

  1. 01

Start with Position/Zoom and modest Pitch/Yaw.

  2. 02

Use Width/Height only for intentional shape correction; do not compensate excessive Pitch/Yaw with them.

  3. 03

Inspect Edge Behaviour and Antialiasing on diagonal edges.

  4. 04

If physically coherent 3D with a true camera/depth is required, stop and use Fusion instead.

03

Fast layout with Interactive - Canvas

Fit an image visually in the Viewer without entering many numeric values.

  1. 01

Choose Interactive - Canvas before building Slider adjustments.

  2. 02

Enable the Open FX overlay and set the overall frame/position before corner or shear-like geometry.

  3. 03

If the move must animate, use Canvas Keyframe instead of trying to transfer values from Sliders.

  4. 04

Before delivery, inspect corner geometry, antialiasing, and edge fill in motion.

04

Transform as a compositing tool

Move/rotate an overlay while controlling alpha/edge/composite without an unnecessary node graph.

  1. 01

First establish correct geometry with Composite Type = Normal.

  2. 02

Use Preview Alpha to inspect Crop / Uncrop, Edge Softness, and Edge Rounding.

  3. 03

Only then select the intended Composite Type and inspect RGB+alpha together.

  4. 04

If the transparent result must composite with Edit-page tracks, verify Add Alpha Output and route the blue key output to the Color-page Alpha Output. Preview Alpha alone does not export a transparency channel.

  5. 05

Leave Global Blend for the final result dosage.

05CHOOSE THE RIGHT TRANSFORM TOOL

Use Transform for general geometry; nearby tools specialize in inset design, tracking, or tiled layout.

Choose by the job before choosing by familiarity.

Transform-related Resolve FX
FXWhen it fits
TransformWhen you need a general 2D/pseudo-3D transform with three interaction modes, edge handling, Motion Blur, Composite Type, and alpha diagnostics.
Picture In Picture ↗When you need a designed inset with separate internal Content framing, card size, border/fill/shadow, and alpha-routing logic.
Surface Tracker ↗When content must follow a deforming surface over time; ordinary Transform does not solve mesh tracking.
Video Collage ↗When many tiles need automated grid layout with rows/columns, spacing, margins, stagger, and keyframe offsets.

06RESET DOWNSTREAM CONTROLS FIRST

Mode resets, repeated edges, aliasing, bad motion, and strange blends have different causes.

Debug by moving upstream: Blend/Composite → Edge → Motion → Geometry → Control Mode.

01Settings disappear or change after switching Control Mode

Likely cause: Sliders, Canvas, and Pins are different interaction methods; Blackmagic does not treat them as seamless views of one shared state.
Fix: Choose the intended Control Mode before animation. If you already switched, return to the intended mode and rebuild geometry rather than continuing to bounce between modes.

02Repeated image fragments appear at the frame edges

Likely cause: Reflect, Wrap-Around, or Replicate is filling exposed source areas instead of Transparent.
Fix: Temporarily switch to Transparent, verify the underlying geometry, then restore edge fill only if it is actually required.

03Text and diagonals alias after Rotate/Pitch/Yaw

Likely cause: Strong transformation combined with insufficient antialiasing or final-resize evaluation.
Fix: Inspect Antialiasing, reduce excessive transformation, and judge the image at 100% after the final resize.

04Animated motion feels jerky but Motion Blur hides the problem

Likely cause: An uneven path/easing or poor keyframe placement was covered by blur too early.
Fix: Set Motion Blur to zero, fix the motion itself, then reintroduce blur as finishing.

05Overlay blends strangely in brightness or color

Likely cause: An unsuitable Composite Type or an attempt to use a blend mode to compensate for another stage.
Fix: Return to Normal, confirm geometry and alpha, then choose the blend mode as a separate creative decision.

06Global Blend only helps by slightly hiding an artifact

Likely cause: The artifact is upstream in geometry, edge fill, alpha, or compositing. Blend merely mixes the finished defect back with the source.
Fix: Return Blend to 1.000, locate and fix the specific upstream control, and use Blend only at the end.

07Canvas/Pins displays handles without changing the image

Likely cause: In Resolve the Open FX overlay and the correct Control Mode must be active. Older teaching demos sometimes displayed decorative handles.
Fix: Enable Open FX controls in the Viewer and drag inside the canvas, a corner or edge. In Pins, add points progressively: one translates; two give scale/rotation; three create affine shear in this teaching lab; four allow perspective corner pinning. Actual Resolve supports perspective effects with three pins.

08Alpha looks right in Color, but lower Edit tracks do not show through

Likely cause: Preview Alpha is only a diagnostic display; outputting alpha from the Color graph may require explicit signal routing.
Fix: In the Color Node Editor, verify Add Alpha Output and connect the appropriate blue key output. Do not confuse this routing with the effect’s Composite Type.

07BEFORE DELIVERY

Approve mode, geometry, boundaries, motion and compositing in that order.

A Transform can look clean at Viewer Fit and still fail at 100%, in motion, or after delivery resize.

08FAQ

Practical Transform questions.

How is Resolve FX Transform different from the normal Inspector Transform?

It adds multiple interaction modes (Sliders/Canvas/Pins), Width/Height, Pitch/Yaw, crop/edge controls, Motion Blur, Edge Behaviour, Composite Type, Preview Alpha, and Global Blend. It is a separate OFX workflow rather than a duplicate of basic clip geometry.

Can I set Sliders first and then switch to Interactive - Canvas?

Do not build a workflow around that switch. Blackmagic describes the modes as separate interaction methods and warns that changing methods can reset adjustments. Choose Control Mode up front.

How is Zoom different from Width/Height?

Zoom changes overall scale proportionally. Width and Height control axes independently and can intentionally stretch the image.

When should I use Transparent, Reflect, Wrap-Around, or Replicate?

Transparent is appropriate when exposed source areas should remain transparent. The other modes fill those areas and can help when zoom/rotation cannot leave empty edges, but they must be checked for repeated patterns.

Should Motion Blur always be enabled?

No. It is only useful when motion benefits from temporal blur. It adds nothing to a static transform and can merely hide a bad animation.

Can I actually drag the corners in the lab?

Yes. Choose Interactive · Canvas to drag corners, sides and center. Interactive · Pins adds up to four point controls progressively. This is an educational projective model, not a pixel-identical OFX implementation.

How do Reflect, Wrap-Around and Replicate differ?

Reflect mirrors the source across its borders, Wrap-Around repeats content from the opposite side, and Replicate extends the last edge pixel. Compare them using footage with text and hard lines.

Why does Preview Alpha not automatically reveal the track below on Edit?

Preview Alpha visualizes the effect alpha. To expose Color-page alpha to the rest of the timeline, add an Alpha Output in the Color Node Editor when needed and wire the relevant blue key output.

Sources and boundaries

Visible Inspector labels are anchored by nine native Resolve captures stored in the project. Current Resolve version context is cross-checked against Blackmagic’s support material; the interaction semantics of Sliders, Interactive - Canvas, Interactive - Pins, Canvas Keyframe, Reset Canvas, and the mode-switching limitation are anchored by Blackmagic’s official Resolve FX Transform documentation. The live hero now renders distinct edge-sampling, projective geometry, alpha and blend operations with draggable Canvas/Pins. It remains a teaching proxy: none of its slider ranges or renderer math should be treated as native Blackmagic OFX controls.

UI and behavior can vary slightly between Resolve 21.x builds and page contexts. Verify the exact production build, especially interactive overlays, keyframe behavior, and delivery scaling.
