01FROM FOOTAGE TO GRAPHITE

An outline, a tonal drawing and a texture are not the same thing.

Pencil Sketch is not a generic blur or a one-click cartoon switch. Set which edges are drawn, shape the light and then decide how visible the paper-like marks should be.

Outlines start with choosing edges

The threshold chooses which contrast changes become outlines. Strength and length shape the marks. No single setting can replace the other two.

Tone preserves shape and volume

Five tone controls reshape shadows, mids and highlights. Protect facial and object readability before adding paper-like texture.

Texture and motion are not outlines

Animate varies texture over time. A still cannot reveal shimmer or boiling: judge motion and a final-resolution export.

02EVERY ACTUAL CONTROL

Fifteen controls. Five groups. No invented screenshots.

The six original PNGs show the exact labels, including the abbreviated “Stroke Detection Thr.”. Screenshot values are a captured state, not recommended values or complete parameter ranges.

01 · Base mode

Color is a creative choice, not a quality setting

Color Sketch

Switches between the monochrome pencil treatment (Off) and a colored drawing interpretation (On). Turning Color Sketch on is not a quality increase; it changes the visual language and use of source color.

On footageCompare both looks on one shot before tuning strokes and tones. The checkbox is off in the authentic screenshot.

02 · Stroke and outline

Three controls determine the character of the line

Stroke Strength

Controls the prominence of drawn lines, including perceived thickness and darkness. Excessive Stroke Strength can emphasize sensor noise and facial texture along with meaningful edges.

On footageInspect eyes, hair and facial outline; avoid increasing strength before selecting a suitable threshold.

Stroke Detection Thr.

Contrast threshold for edge detection: lower thresholds can include faint structure, while higher thresholds favor pronounced transitions. This chooses which changes are treated as edges, not the final opacity.

On footageUse detailed fabric or hair to spot where outlines turn into clutter, then refine Stroke Strength.

Stroke Length

Shapes the extent and appearance of drawn strokes. Shorter strokes preserve finer mark-making; longer strokes can read as looser graphic lines. It is neither motion blur nor animation.

On footageInspect a still outline and a moving shot; excessive stroke length can obscure small recognizable details.

03 · Tonal design

Retain volume while turning footage into a drawing

Tone Adjust Amount

Strength of the sketch tonal treatment. Useful for judging tonal redesign independently of already chosen strokes and texture.

On footageStart from a moderate tonal treatment and inspect smooth gradients across a face.

Shadow Level

Adjusts the sketch’s underlying shadow placement. Extreme settings may merge dark garments and background into one mass.

On footageInspect dark hair against a dark background: the silhouette should remain legible.

More Shadow

Weights the dark masses in the stylization. Useful for graphic pencil work, but excessive dark fill can erase midtone and texture.

On footageIf facial features disappear in the shadows, reduce this control before reaching for Global Blend.

More Midtone

Adjusts the role of midtones in the drawing: a key control for the volume of skin, walls, clothing and other mid-value subjects.

On footageCompare cheekbone volume and smooth background gradients in the same image.

More Highlight

Shapes how highlights contribute to the drawn result. It can preserve a paper-like lightness or flatten reflections if pushed too far.

On footageInspect a white shirt and strong highlights; their important structure should stay readable.

04 · Paper texture and hatching

Texture is a separate creative decision

Animate

Enables temporal variation in the sketch texture. This checkbox is not the same as keyframing other parameters or animating the Color node position.

On footageLoop two or three seconds and check for distracting texture boil on a static background.

Texture Amount

Amount of textural mark-making over the drawing. Unlike Stroke Strength, this can clutter a well-shaped line drawing without adding meaningful edges.

On footageToggle texture off for A/B. If the subject reads more clearly without it, restore a lower amount.

Texture Direction

Orientation of hatch-like texture (a numeric control in Resolve). Judge it against the shape of your subject rather than chasing a pleasing number.

On footageOn a diagonal shape, compare perpendicular directions to see which orientation supports the form.

Texture Length

Sets the span of the texture marks. Short marks can resemble grain; longer ones read as intentional hatching.

On footageInspect at 100% and after downsizing to final publication resolution.

Random Seed

Chooses another pseudo-random texture pattern without changing Amount, Direction or Length. The number identifies a pattern; it is not an intensity setting.

On footageRecord the seed for repeatability; with Animate, review its actual temporal behavior in playback.

05 · Final mixing

Blend cannot repair incorrect strokes

Global Blend · Blend

Mixes the fully processed image with the original frame. Reducing it weakens ALL parts of the effect together, rather than selectively fixing overdone texture or strokes.

On footageIf the picture is dirty, repair Stroke/Texture first; only then set the final Blend.

03CHOOSE THE INTENT

Three styles. Three different priorities.

No numeric preset works on every source. Choose whether you prioritize clean edges, preserved color or animated texture. Use the lab to compare the decisions, then tune the actual Resolve controls.

01

Graphite portrait

Outlines before texture

Monochrome pencil: Color Sketch Off, selectively detected edges, carefully balanced tone.

Ensure eyes and face remain readable with Texture Amount off.

02

Colored illustration

Preserve color masses

Color Sketch On and restrained outlines. Tone holds volume and Texture Amount does not overwhelm the colors.

Check color recognition at small viewing size.

03

Animated sketchbook

Moving hatching

Establish a stable look, then enable Animate for texture only. Animation does not repair noisy footage.

Review two to three seconds of motion and a compressed short export.

Do not confuse “Animate” under Sketch Texture Controls with frame interpolation or motion blur. Turn it on only if its temporal variation genuinely helps the scene.

04FROM SOURCE TO DRAWING

Give the pencil look its own Color node.

Select a Color node, open Effects, find Pencil Sketch under Resolve FX Stylize, and apply it to the node. Keep the base balance separate; Power Windows are optional.

The stylization stage

Tune Color Sketch, Stroke, Tone and Texture in that order. Use Global Blend after the drawing reads well at full strength.

Green lines are RGB connections. A window is a mask on the FX node, not an external image feed. This diagram is educational, not a screenshot of Resolve.

05REPRODUCE THE RESULT

Four exercises with acceptance criteria.

Work on your own clips; inspect both the full frame and fine details. These are workflows, not promises of exact slider values.

01

Graphite portrait

Recognizable facial features without noisy pores

SourceA softly lit close-up; include a short head movement.

  1. 01

Use a separate serial node with Pencil Sketch from Resolve FX Stylize; turn Color Sketch off.

  2. 02

Adjust Stroke Detection Thr. until eyes and silhouette read without turning skin into a mesh.

  3. 03

Increase Stroke Strength and Length gently; inspect hair and lashes.

  4. 04

Shape volume with Tone Adjust and shadow/midtone/highlight controls, then add restrained Texture Amount.

Acceptance check

The face stays recognizable and the paper texture reads without dominating.

02

Colored graphic illustration

A bold graphic frame without dense crosshatching

SourceProduct footage with a few strong, separated color shapes.

  1. 01

Enable Color Sketch and check that the key brand colors remain recognizable.

  2. 02

Use Threshold and Strength to retain key outlines without tracing every pixel.

  3. 03

Adjust midtone and shadow moderately without flattening the object.

  4. 04

Reduce Texture Amount if hatching competes with the color design.

Acceptance check

Silhouette and color remain clear at mobile viewing size.

03

Animated sketchbook

Living hatching without unwanted flicker

SourceA three-to-five-second camera or subject move.

  1. 01

Establish a stable Pencil Sketch with Animate off, then tune Texture Direction/Length.

  2. 02

Turn Animate on and inspect motion in static regions.

  3. 03

Lower Texture Amount if the paper starts boiling; inspect a compressed export.

  4. 04

Record Random Seed and all controls for repeatable adjustments on the next shot.

Acceptance check

Animation feels intentional and avoids shimmer after delivery encoding.

04

Live-action to sketch transition

A gradual artistic reveal rather than a contrast jump

SourceA shot with controlled motion and a clear edit point.

  1. 01

Build the finished sketch look at full Global Blend.

  2. 02

Keyframe Blend from original footage to the chosen treatment; do not animate every setting at once.

  3. 03

If needed, animate one additional texture setting after the Blend transition works.

  4. 04

Judge the transition at project speed and in the target export.

Acceptance check

The silhouette stays stable; the transformation feels intentional with no abrupt exposure shift.

06CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOOL

A sketch is not every kind of stylization.

Pencil Sketch and nearby stylize options
FXCore treatmentWhen to use
Pencil SketchOutlines, tone and paper-like hatching, with optional color and texture animation. For readable hand-drawn styling.
Abstraction ↗Simplifies color regions rather than requiring drawn pencil marks. For flatter cartoonized regions.
Watercolor ↗Softened pigment-like color fields and blended edges. For painterly washes instead of graphite outlines.
Prism Blur ↗Optical blur and chromatic aberration rather than drawn outlines. For dreamy optics rather than pencil style.

07IDENTIFY THE CAUSE

Bad lines, flat tone or noisy paper?

01Skin looks like a dirty mesh

Raise the edge threshold or reduce Stroke Strength; then test less Texture Amount. Edge detection and texture are two separate causes.

02Shadows collapse into black

Check Shadow Level and More Shadow, then Tone Adjust Amount; adjust Blend only after retaining volume.

03Facial midtones feel flat

Inspect More Midtone and More Highlight on a close-up. Texture Amount cannot restore missing midtone structure.

04The background boils in motion

Disable Animate for A/B, lower Texture Amount and inspect direction/length. Compare real-time playback and compressed export.

05Sketch vanishes after downsizing

Check stroke scale at delivery resolution, not just a zoomed viewer. Tone should hold the form when fine hatching disappears.

06Less Blend still looks unnatural

Revisit Color Sketch, threshold and tone balance. Global Blend mixes two results; it cannot fix an overly harsh sketch construction.

Clean the source before stylization

Camera noise and compression blocks can become accidental outlines. A separate input cleanup often beats raising Detection Thr. so far that real edges disappear.

Keep the look separate from the base grade

Place Pencil Sketch on its own Color node after the base grade. Bypass it cleanly, compare with the source, limit its area with a Power Window and keyframe Blend without undoing exposure decisions.

Motion review beats a flattering still

Animate, Random Seed and fine marks may behave differently in motion, after scaling or in a delivery codec. Make a short test encode at target settings before final sign-off.

08BEFORE DELIVERY

Approve the moving drawing, not just a still.

Checking these items is a local reminder, not automatic validation of Resolve footage.

SELF-CHECK0 / 8

Your marks apply to this visit; nothing is sent to a server.

09PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

Keep control meanings separate.

Is Pencil Sketch just a Blur?

No. It creates drawn-looking outlines, remaps tonal structure and adds hatch texture; ordinary blur averages adjacent pixels.

What does Color Sketch change?

It switches between colored and monochrome drawing styles, not fidelity or processing quality.

Why test Threshold before Strength?

Threshold chooses which edges enter the drawing. Strength then emphasizes those edges, including unwanted ones.

Are Stroke Length and Texture Length the same?

No. Stroke Length shapes contour marks; Texture Length affects the separate hatch-like texture.

How do I keep portraits clean?

Start with texture off. Tune threshold, strength and tone on skin, then add Texture Amount only once the face reads clearly.

Does Animate smooth the footage motion?

No. It varies the texture over time; it is not optical flow, motion blur or frame-rate conversion.

What is Random Seed for?

It changes the pseudo-random texture pattern. Record it for repeatability; it is not an intensity control.

Will every shot become a convincing real pencil drawing?

The plugin creates an algorithmic stylization. Source light, contrast, movement and mark scale determine its credibility. The site lab only demonstrates the principle.

Sources and boundaries

UI labels and visible settings were verified against the six original PNG files in the supplied site archive. Blackmagic’s reference describes the artistic systems. The interactive lab is an independent pixel model, not a simulation of Resolve’s own rasterization, internal parameter mapping, processing order or temporal behavior.

Pencil Sketch is identified as Studio-only by the Resolve 21 reference. Version/edition behavior should be checked in your installed Resolve; the exercise footage has not been physically certified in the editor during this website update.
