Abstraction
Graphic simplification, quantization and drawn-edge stylization
A Studio-only Resolve FX Stylize processor that simplifies photographic detail into broader color/tonal regions, can quantize those regions, and can optionally draw selected edges back over the result.
Abstraction
Overview
What Abstraction does
Abstraction belongs to Resolve FX Stylize and is designed for cartoon- and poster-like processing. It reduces photographic micro-detail, groups related color regions into broader shapes, and can add controlled outlines afterward.
Do not treat the node as one generic style-strength slider. Its Inspector is split into three useful stages: base abstraction, Quantization, and Draw Edge. Keeping those stages separate makes the result much easier to diagnose.
Pre Blur runs before the abstraction stage. It suppresses noise, pores, grass, compression chatter and other high-frequency detail that would otherwise become tiny graphic islands or false edges.
Abstraction Strength controls how strongly adjacent similar regions are averaged and consolidated. Low values preserve more of the source; high values collapse smaller forms into broader graphic masses.
Iterate Abstraction repeats and widens that simplification. The documented dependency matters: iteration has no useful effect while Abstraction Strength remains at zero, so establish a non-zero strength before judging the iteration count.
More iterations are not automatically better. They progressively erase small facial cues, hair structure, thin lines and small typography, so increase the count only while those details are meant to disappear.
Quantization is a separate optional stage. It does not simply increase Abstraction Strength; instead, it reduces the number of visible color or tonal levels and produces a flatter, more poster-like result.
Steps controls how many quantized levels remain. More steps preserve smoother transitions; fewer steps create broader plateaus and make banding-like boundaries more obvious, especially in skin and skies.
Softness smooths the borders between quantized levels. It is not a global blur control, so use it to relax hard level transitions rather than to hide every problem in the source.
Draw Edge can be enabled independently of Quantization. Abstraction can therefore be useful as a soft background simplifier with no lines, or as a much more explicit illustrated/cartoon treatment with lines.
Edge Strength controls how prominent and visually thick the detected lines become. Large values also make unwanted texture edges more obvious, which is why line strength should be set only after the source is clean enough.
Edge Threshold decides which contrast transitions qualify as edges. A low threshold admits more small structure; a higher threshold keeps only stronger boundaries.
Pre Blur and Edge Threshold usually solve dirty linework more effectively than pushing Edge Strength alone. Clean the source first, choose which boundaries survive second, then set how strongly those boundaries should be drawn.
The primary Input is a normal 2D RGBA image. Effect Mask is not a second image/reference input; it only gates the spatial contribution of the completed effect.
Output remains a normal image stream, so Abstraction can feed Color Corrector, Glow, grain, Merge or MediaOut without crossing into Shape, 3D or particle data.
Judge the effect in motion, not only on a flattering still. Region consolidation and edge detection can rearrange around moving fine texture, creating temporal swimming or flicker that is easy to miss on one frame.
If the goal is mainly a reduced palette, test Quantization with restrained abstraction first. If the goal is shape simplification, establish Strength and Iterations before enabling Quantization so each stage remains understandable.
For local stylization, keep the algorithm stable and use Effect Mask for coverage instead of animating many effect parameters to chase one area of the frame.
When to use it

Simplified backgrounds behind titles and graphics
Illustrated freeze frames
Transitions from photographic footage into a graphic treatment
Broad color/tonal simplification without fine texture
Controlled outlines over an already simplified image
Local stylization with Effect Mask
A stylized branch for later grading, Glow, grain or blending with the original
