Rectangle

Rectangular mask

Creates a rectangular or rounded rectangular mask for isolating areas and shaping graphics.

Rectangle
DaVinci Resolve · Fusion

Rectangle is a fast, parametric mask that is ideal for title plates, windows, local effects and simple reveals.

Overview

What Rectangle does

Rectangle is one of the fastest ways to shape a Background into a graphic card or to limit an effect to a clean rectangular area.

Because it is parametric, size, position, corner radius and softness can be animated without editing individual points.

For irregular objects, Polygon is more appropriate. Rectangle is strongest when the design is intentionally geometric.

Mental model

Rectangle is a reusable stencil: whatever node receives it as an Effect Mask is only affected inside the shape.

Common uses

Create title plates
Mask a blur
Build picture-in-picture frames
Reveal text or graphics
Create rounded UI cards
Limit color or glow effects

Important parameters

Start with these controls before reaching for more complicated workarounds.

Center

Position of the rectangle.

Move the mask without changing its dimensions.

Width

Sets the horizontal size.

Height

Sets the vertical size.

Angle

Sets the angle of the element.

Corner Radius

Rounds the rectangle corners.

Useful for modern UI-style cards and lower thirds.

Soft Edge

Feathers the mask boundary.

Use small values for subtle blending and larger values for soft light masks.

Border Width

Sets the width of the mask or shape border.

Solid

Fills the interior of the shape instead of drawing only its border.

Invert

Swaps inside and outside of the mask.

Useful when you want an effect everywhere except the rectangle.

Level

Sets the opacity/level of the Rectangle mask.

Paint Mode

Selects the Paint Mode used by Rectangle.

Practical setup

A reliable workflow

  1. 1

    Create Rectangle.

  2. 2

Connect its output to a blue Effect Mask input.

  3. 3

    Set Center, Width and Height.

  4. 4

Add Corner Radius or Soft Edge if required.

  5. 5

Animate dimensions or position for a reveal.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

Using Rectangle for complex organic shapes.
Over-feathering a crisp graphic plate.
Animating Width and Center inconsistently and causing the mask to drift.

Production notes

Practical tips

Use Rectangle for clean graphic geometry and Polygon for custom silhouettes.
A small corner radius often looks more polished than perfectly square corners.
For animated reveals, decide whether the mask should grow from center or from one edge.
