Point tracking and match move

Tracks one or more image features and can apply the resulting motion to graphics, stabilization or masks.

Tracker is the classic point-tracking node for following high-contrast features through a shot.

Overview

What Tracker does

Tracker follows a recognizable feature frame by frame. The tracked motion can then drive a graphic, stabilize the source, or help a mask follow an object.

A good tracking point has stable contrast and texture. Flat surfaces, reflections, motion blur and objects leaving the frame make point tracking less reliable.

Use the simplest tracking model that matches the shot. For broad surface perspective changes, Planar Tracker is often better than forcing several point tracks to solve the motion.

Mental model

Tracker locks onto a visible feature and records how that feature moves over time.

Add Tracker: IntelliTrack

Adds an IntelliTrack tracker at the current frame.

Add Tracker: Point

Adds a standard point tracker at the current frame.

Tracker List

Lists the trackers in this node and lets you select the track you want to edit.

Tracking buttons

Tracks the selected points backward or forward from the current frame.

Use the one-frame buttons when you need to step through a difficult section manually.

Frames Per Point

Controls how densely points are drawn along the tracked path in the Viewer.

Adaptive Mode

Controls how the tracker updates its reference pattern as the shot changes.

Path Center

Sets the center used when displaying or applying the tracked path.

Tracked Center

Shows the solved center position of the selected tracker.

X Offset / Y Offset

Offsets the applied track in X and Y without changing the underlying tracking data.

Operation

Chooses how the tracking data is used, such as Match Move, Stabilize or Corner Positioning.

Match Move

Applies the tracked motion to another element instead of removing that motion from the source.

Corner Positioning

Uses multiple trackers to drive a four-corner placement.

Perspective Positioning

Allows a corner-positioned result to follow perspective changes in the tracked surface.

Pivot type

Chooses how the pivot is handled when tracking data drives rotation and scale.

Reference

Sets the reference frame used when the track is applied for stabilization or match moving.

Show Pattern Names

Shows tracker pattern names in the Viewer.

Enlarge Pattern on Dragging

Temporarily enlarges the tracker pattern view while you drag or refine a tracking region.

Enlargement Scale

Sets the size of that temporary enlarged pattern view.

Search Area Scale

Scales the search region used to find the tracked feature on neighboring frames.

A larger search area can follow faster motion but costs more processing and may pick up competing detail.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

Tracking a low-contrast feature.

Ignoring drift because the track looks acceptable on only a few frames.

Track on high-contrast texture, not on a soft edge.
Check the entire shot at full speed after tracking.
