PanoMap
Spherical projection conversion and orientation
PanoMap is a Studio-only Fusion VR tool that converts spherical images between VCross, HCross, VStrip, HStrip, LatLong, VR180 and Immersive layouts and re-orients them with Rotation Order plus Rotate X/Y/Z.
PanoMap
Overview
What PanoMap does
PanoMap belongs to Fusion's VR toolset and is documented as a DaVinci Resolve Studio / Fusion Studio feature. That matters when building templates or training material: do not present it as a normal Free-version image processor.
Its physical graph is simple: one primary Image input, an optional Effect Mask and one Output. PanoMap does not expose a separate VR, 3D or metadata socket; the result remains an RGBA image stream whose pixels are packed in the selected spherical projection.
From tells PanoMap how the incoming map is packed. A wrong From does not merely change scale: it changes the spherical interpretation itself, so cube faces, poles and directions can end up in the wrong places. Diagnose From before touching Rotation.
To selects the destination packing for the same spherical content. PanoMap can move between cross/strip cube maps, LatLong/equirectangular representation and current VR180/Immersive workflows. If only orientation must change, From and To can remain the same.
VCross and HCross arrange six square cube faces as vertical or horizontal crosses. VStrip and HStrip place the same six faces in one strip. Fusion's classic strip order is Left, Right, Up, Down, Back, Front (+X, -X, +Y, -Y, +Z, -Z), so a third-party cube map with another face order can look wrong even when Strip itself is selected correctly.
LatLong is the equirectangular representation of the full sphere and is commonly 2:1. Horizontal position maps longitude and vertical position maps latitude. The poles look stretched in a flat viewer because of the projection itself, not because PanoMap has failed.
Resolve 20 added VR180 choices to PanoMap From/To. Blackmagic's New Features Guide explicitly describes converting 360 LatLong to VR180 and rotating the source so the desired content falls inside the 180-degree framing. VR180 therefore should not be described as simply cropping half the width with Crop.
Resolve 21 expands standard immersive workflows around tools including PanoMap, with immersive rotation and ILPD retargeting called out in Blackmagic documentation. Do not invent an ILPD socket or an unverified Inspector control from that feature description: the reviewed visible base controls remain From/To plus spherical rotation.
Rotation Order defines the Euler sequence. XYZ means X then Y then Z, and all six permutations XYZ, XZY, YXZ, YZX, ZXY and ZYX are available. The same X/Y/Z values can produce a different orientation under a different order, so this is part of the orientation math rather than a cosmetic option.
Rotate X, Rotate Y and Rotate Z rotate the spherical image around their respective axes. In the tool reference, X corresponds to pitch/tilt, Y to pan/yaw and Z to roll. Change one axis at a time while troubleshooting so an orientation error is not confused with a wrong From/To layout.
Effect Mask physically exists but is rarely needed for a normal full-panorama conversion. If the entire projection must be transformed, leave it unconnected: locally mixing old and new projection states can create a geometrically confusing transition boundary.
After conversion, validate more than the flat map. A spherical/360 viewer exposes forward direction, seams, poles and orientation mistakes more clearly; for VR180 or Immersive delivery, a final check in the intended headset or delivery pipeline is stronger still.
When to use it
Convert 360 LatLong to HCross, VCross or strip cube maps for CGI/environment workflows.
Convert cube-map cross/strip sources to LatLong for spherical viewing and further Fusion compositing.
Convert 360 LatLong to VR180 and choose the forward direction with spherical rotation.
Move VR180 or Immersive material to LatLong as an intermediate space for compatible VR tools.
Re-orient a panorama with matching From and To without using a flat 2D Transform.
Prepare panoramic HDRI/environment maps for another packing or orientation.
Diagnose an unknown spherical packing by explicitly switching From and examining a LatLong/360-view result.
