SetDomain

The valid-data region of an image

SetDomain sets or adjusts the Domain of Definition: the rectangle where an image is considered to contain valid data. Physical frame dimensions are preserved; an optional Foreground can supply its own data region.

SetDomain

Overview

What SetDomain does

The data region and physical format are different image properties. A 1920×1080 frame can have a smaller DoD or a region extending beyond the visible frame. SetDomain is not a resolution command.

In Set mode, values define the rectangle sides in normalized coordinates. The full visible frame corresponds to Left=0, Bottom=0, Right=1, Top=1. For a central region, first select Set and then check all four sides.

In Adjust mode, zero offsets leave the existing boundaries. BMD describes positive offsets as shrinking the DoD and negative offsets as expanding it. Do not transfer a Set coordinate interpretation to an Adjust offset.

Foreground receives a second 2D image and supplies its DoD to the main stream. It is a region-donor input: Input remains the main image. Give the branches different colors and compare their boundaries when checking it.

The supplied Inspector shows Combine Mode with Copy, Union and Intersect. These entries are retained and explained as replacing, combining and intersecting regions. The cited BMD 21 section does not separately detail this selector, so inspect the resulting output DoD for the precise combination behavior.

A DoD change affects the area processed by downstream nodes. Shrinking can exclude needed data, and expanding does not recover pixels that have already been destroyed. Any time saving depends on downstream processing and needs its own measurement.

When to use it

  • Define an explicit central data region while preserving frame format.

  • Compare zero, positive and negative offsets to an existing DoD.

  • Transfer a helper branch data region to the main stream.

  • Locate the stage after which downstream processing loses needed edges.
