Lens Distortion.
Bend the frame.
Protect the edges.
A radial optical field is more than one Distortion slider. Learn the center, RGB split, border sampling and final mix — then test straight lines, corners and motion instead of trusting a preset.
Distortion + Fine
Position + RGB
Edge + Blend
Change Distortion on the test grid, then switch Edge Behaviour and move the optical center. The demo is a teaching renderer, not Resolve’s actual OFX.
COARSE · turn on Fine Adjustment for finer slider steps
An independent inverse-radial illustration, NOT Resolve’s OFX renderer. Distortion and RGB separation use demo coefficients, Fine changes only this model’s slider step. Edge sampling is illustrative; no camera calibration or live Resolve verification is claimed.

8 control groups/terms · 4 exercises01THE RADIAL FIELD
The curve, the center and the missing pixels.
Do not equate this filter with zoom, lens-profile analysis or a full camera calibration. It is a manual radial warp.
Radial geometry
Distortion depends on distance from a chosen center. Straight lines near the edges may bow outward or inward. Distortion changes the curvature, not simply the image scale.
The center is part of the mapping
Position X/Y sets the lens field center. The same strength looks different when the center moves. Fine Adjustment enables smaller strength adjustments; it is not another control for moving the center.
Edges and channels are independent choices
Warping may expose pixels beyond the original frame. Edge Behaviour governs those regions. Split Channels permits different RGB distortion, while Global Blend mixes the processed result back with the original.

02ACTUAL RESOLVE 21 CONTROLS
Every control has a different job.
Four original captures from this project, including the actual opened dropdown. We distinguish controls visible in screenshots from RGB options documented in the manual but not shown expanded.
01 · DISTORTION SHAPE
Establish the curve before fine tuning.
Main controls; the sign determines the bend direction.
- Distortion
Primary magnitude and direction of radial warping. The manual associates negative values with a fisheye bulge and positive values with inward bowing. There is no automatic camera-profile correction here; judge straight lines in the actual image.
Verify on footageCheck edge verticals, peripheral horizon lines and the center: a value that improves one region can harm another.
- Fine Adjustment
Changes the working adjustment range/sensitivity of distortion controls for precise fine changes. It is neither a separate quality algorithm nor a Position control.
Verify on footageFine-tune Distortion once direction and center are established; do not treat a prior displayed number as a camera calibration.
02 · COLOR CHANNELS
RGB channels can bend differently.
Split Channels is off in the captured panel; its expanded controls are not shown in the source images.
- Split Channels
When off, channels share the distortion. When enabled, distortion can be controlled per color channel, producing an RGB fringe akin to chromatic aberration. It is not a one-click fringe correction.
Verify on footageInspect high-contrast edge lines, wires and titles. If unwanted color fringes appear, disable the split or bring channel settings closer.
- Red / Green / Blue (при разделении)
Separate RGB distortion values are documented in the Resolve FX Warp manual. Because the captured UI shows Split Channels off, the exact expanded control layout in the installed Resolve 21 build is not established by these screenshots.
Verify on footageDo not copy assumed numbers from another UI version; verify the expanded controls on your own installation.
03 · CENTER POSITION
Do not confuse center with strength.
The captured values X = Y = 0.500 indicate the frame center, not a camera EXIF profile.
- Position X
Horizontal coordinate of the radial field center. Moving it changes the bend pattern throughout the frame.
Verify on footageAlign to the source lens axis or creative goal; do not automatically anchor to a subject’s face.
- Position Y
Independent vertical coordinate of the distortion field. Offsets are visible in horizons and distant corners.
Verify on footageInspect all four frame edges: a center shift may look right centrally but damage one corner.
04 · OUT-OF-FRAME
Where do missing pixels come from?
See all four real dropdown choices in the dedicated section below.
- Edge Behaviour
Fill policy for regions that, after mapping, sample outside the original image: Black, Reflect, Wrap-Around or Replicate. This does not reconstruct missing camera detail.
Verify on footageCheck corners, seams and motion; reflection or stretching can reveal repeated details.
05 · FINAL MIX
Mix does not repair geometry.
A separate global effect blend, not a mask or camera correction profile.
- Global Blend → Blend
Mixes the Lens Distortion result with the incoming image: 1.000 means the full processed result; lower values attenuate it. Useful for a subtle look or fade, but it cannot fix an incorrect center or blanking.
Verify on footageCompare reducing Distortion with reducing Blend on the same shot: the geometry is not necessarily equivalent.
03FOUR DROPDOWN CHOICES
Edge Behaviour is not a quality preset.
Modes differ in what samples are used when a warp points beyond the captured image. The letters below are conceptual diagrams, not Resolve pixels.
Black
▧ 0 | A B C | 0 ▧Out-of-frame regions remain black. Reasonable when the gaps will later be hidden using Node Sizing, cropping or compositing.
Check that no black wedge appears in the delivered moving shot.
Reflect
C B | A B C | B AMirrors the image beyond the boundary. Seams may be less abrupt, but mirrored faces, text or architecture are conspicuous.
Look for repeated mirrored subjects at the frame edge.
Wrap-Around
B C | A B C | A BWraps sampling to the opposite image boundary. Useful for tile-like effects but may create an obvious seam.
Compare opposite edges for details reappearing across the frame.
Replicate
A A | A B C | C CExtends the outermost pixels. Often less harsh than blank regions, but large extensions can turn into stripes.
Check for stripes along skies and building edges.
The archived menu uses the spelling “Edge Behaviour” and lists Black / Reflect / Wrap-Around / Replicate. These are genuine controls, not generated images. Edge modes do not recreate missing captured information.
04COLOR NODE CHAIN
Keep optical geometry separate from your grade.
In the Color page, open Effects → Resolve FX Warp → Lens Distortion and drag it to the intended node. Use a Power Window on that same node only if you need a local region.
Apply Lens Distortion to this Color node
Start with the whole frame: adjust distortion sign and center, check edges and only then use Blend. Do not fix open edges with a later blend alone.
Green RGB wires denote the image path. The dashed note (if visible) is an annotation, not a connection. This is a teaching SVG, not a fabricated Resolve screenshot.

05REPRODUCIBLE EXERCISES
Four goals, four ways to validate them.
Use your own clips; neither the demo strength nor screenshot values are proposed as fixed presets. Review a moving excerpt, not only a still.
A restrained lens correction
Reduce visible radial bowing without damaging faces or geometry.
PrepareUse a shot with straight walls/door frames and details near the edges; add a separate Color node.
- 01
Add Lens Distortion from Effects > Resolve FX Warp to the selected node. Disable Split Channels.
- 02
Start with Global Blend 1.000, Position center at 0.500/0.500, and move Distortion in small steps.
- 03
If the distortion is asymmetrical, adjust Position X/Y, then enable Fine Adjustment for smaller corrections.
- 04
Pick Edge Behaviour and review corners, then compare bypass and a short export.
Reference lines look more natural without blank wedges or visible mirrored duplicates. This FX does not promise calibrated lens-profile correction.
Controlled fisheye styling
Create an optical accent without making the frame unreadable.
PrepareUse a street shot or another clip with visible perspective.
- 01
Begin with negative Distortion; the reference manual associates that direction with fisheye bulging.
- 02
Check the center and diagonals, then shift Position X/Y only if the composition needs it.
- 03
Compare Reflect and Replicate while the shot is moving.
- 04
Reduce Distortion if the design is too aggressive; use Blend for the final artistic mix.
The distortion reads as intentional lens styling; faces and edge lines do not break unintentionally.
Chromatic optics without accidental fringing
Add intentional RGB separation on high-contrast boundaries.
PrepareUse highlights, wires or architecture; watch any colored text.
- 01
Set the base geometry while Split Channels is disabled.
- 02
Enable Split Channels and inspect the resulting RGB controls in your installed Resolve version.
- 03
Keep channel differences small and compare the center with the periphery.
- 04
Check that logos and subtitles do not acquire distracting colored fringes.
The RGB accent supports the look instead of damaging the informational elements.
Tracked local optical accent
Apply a warp to one region without bending the entire frame.
PrepareUse a moving object shot and a dedicated Lens Distortion Color node.
- 01
Use a serial node with Lens Distortion and establish the warp field.
- 02
Add a Power Window ON THAT NODE and track it through Tracker when required.
- 03
Inspect mask edges in motion so the warped geometry does not tear visually.
- 04
Compare full-frame and local versions; export a moving excerpt.
The effect follows the intended region without tracking jumps or unexpected warping at the Window boundary.
06USE THE RIGHT TOOL
Not every optical problem calls for a warp.
In particular, Lens Correction → Analyze is not the same tool as this manual Resolve FX. Do not treat Lens Distortion as measured, profile-based lens calibration.
| FX | Mechanism | Choose it when... |
|---|---|---|
| Lens Distortion | Radial warping, center, edge modes and optional RGB separation. | Quick optical correction/styling on a Color node. |
| Warper ↗ | Free-form warp with points/curves, limiters and local deformation control. | Manipulate local contours rather than applying a global radial field. |
| Transform ↗ | Scale, position, rotation and perspective rather than lens curvature. | Reframe without lens-style bending. |
| Chromatic Aberration Removal ↗ | A tool to reduce color fringing, not to create a general lens bend. | Reduce unwanted color fringes instead of styling with RGB split. |
| Vignette ↗ | Periphery-based tonal falloff without resampling geometry. | Direct attention without bending straight lines. |
07DIAGNOSE, DO NOT GUESS
Symptoms reveal which setting is wrong.
01Applying the effect changes nothing+
Check that the FX is applied to the selected Color node, that the node is enabled, Global Blend is not zero, and Distortion is non-neutral. Temporarily disable any Power Window to isolate the issue.
02Straight lines bend even more+
Check Distortion sign and Position X/Y against source geometry. Compare against bypass rather than stacking corrections. The effect has no built-in profile for your specific lens.
03Black wedges appear at corners+
Black edge mode leaves missing pixels unfilled. Try Reflect/Replicate; if a clean edge is essential, consider Node Sizing. The Warp manual notes that Edit/Input Sizing may scale inside an already blanked border.
04Repeated faces or objects appear at the edges+
Reflect/Wrap-Around/Replicate extrapolate pixels; they do not recover captured details. Try another edge policy, less distortion or Node Sizing; check the shot in motion.
05The center looks fine but one corner does not+
Check Position X/Y and the shot axis. Do not conceal a poorly centered field with Blend; fix the field, then the edges.
06Unwanted color fringes appear+
Check Split Channels and separate RGB values when the expanded mode is available. For regular geometric correction, start with channel splitting off.
07Blend is lower but the geometry still looks wrong+
Global Blend mixes the already warped image with the source, which is not identical to reducing Distortion. Fix distortion strength and center first; dial mixing last.
08A Power Window slips off the subject+
Check Tracker/Window on the FX node and export a short clip covering the fastest motion. The lens warp does not track subjects automatically.
Keyframes and animation
The captured interface shows keyframe diamonds near Distortion, Position and Blend. Animate deliberately and review in motion; technical corrections are generally best kept stable.
Correct framing when edges open
The Resolve FX Warp manual specifically recommends Node Sizing → Zoom when strong deformation causes blanking. This differs from Edit/Input Sizing, which may fail to remove the empty border.
Compatibility and test scope
The Resolve 21 reference lists Lens Distortion as Studio Version Only. This article checks the archived PNG interface and documented behavior; no live Resolve 21 export was performed during this update.
08BEFORE DELIVERY

This checklist is a local reminder, not an automated Resolve certification.
09QUESTIONS AND DISTINCTIONS
Do not confuse the four different controls.
Is Lens Distortion the same as Lens Correction → Analyze?
No. Lens Distortion is a manual Resolve FX Warp with a radial field and edge rules. The Lens Correction Analyze tools in Inspector/Sizing belong to a different workflow.
Which sign gives a fisheye-like bulge?
The Resolve FX Warp manual associates negative Distortion with a fisheye bulge and positive values with the opposite bend. Always inspect the real shot and do not transfer values between different algorithms.
Does Fine Adjustment move the distortion center?
No. Fine Adjustment changes the distortion adjustment sensitivity/range for precise control. Position X and Position Y control the center.
How does Split Channels differ from Global Blend?
Split Channels allows different geometric distortions for RGB, potentially producing color fringes. Blend merely mixes the resulting image with the original.
Is one Edge Behaviour mode always correct?
No. Black leaves gaps, Reflect mirrors edges, Wrap-Around samples the opposite edge, and Replicate extends edge pixels. The right choice depends on the shot and warp strength.
Why do blank corners survive scaling?
The Warp manual notes that Edit Sizing and Input Sizing may zoom content inside the empty border. With strong blanking, try Zoom in Node Sizing and verify the exported frame.
Can this effect be used locally?
Yes: apply Lens Distortion to a Color node with a Power Window. Moving regions may need tracking. A local mask does not replace correct Distortion/Position.
Is Lens Distortion available in free Resolve?
The DaVinci Resolve 21 reference labels Lens Distortion as Studio Version Only. Check your installed edition before relying on it in a workflow.
Sources, accuracy and scope
Parameter labels, dropdown choices and screenshot dimensions were checked against four original PNGs in the supplied project. The Resolve FX Warp manual was consulted for behavior, fine adjustments, Node Sizing and Studio availability. The interactive field is independent mathematics, not an implementation of Blackmagic’s OFX.
The Split Channels screenshot is unchecked; its expanded controls are therefore described from the manual rather than misrepresented by synthetic UI. No live Resolve 21 test or output certification was performed in this site-only update.
