1. Interface anatomy

Three controls — three different jobs

The control names and visible ranges below come directly from the supplied live Resolve 21 interface. The page does not claim undocumented formant, time-stretch or quality modes that are not present in this UI.

Semitones · −12…+12

The coarse pitch control. One semitone is one chromatic step; ±12 semitones spans one octave down or up. Use it when the shift should be musically or dramatically obvious.

Cents · −100…+100

Fine tuning around the coarse semitone position. One hundred cents equals one semitone, so this control is useful for subtle detuning, matching or deliberately unstable layers.

Dry/Wet · 0…100%

Blends the original signal with the pitch-shifted result. 100% is fully processed; lower values create a parallel blend where the original pitch remains present.

Output meter

Use the output meter and bypass comparison to avoid mistaking a level change for an improvement. Pitch effects can alter perceived density even when there is no dedicated output-gain knob.

2. How to think about it

Semitones choose the destination; cents decide how precisely you land

Large transposition

Move by whole semitones when you want a clearly different register: lower impacts, higher synthetic accents, octave doubles or designed voice/SFX transformations.

Micro detune

Leave Semitones near the musical target and use Cents for small offsets. This is useful when two copies should not feel perfectly identical.

Parallel pitch layer

Reduce Dry/Wet when the shifted signal should support rather than replace the source. Always check phase, mono compatibility and whether the blend produces an unwanted double image.

3. Practical workflow

Tune the effect by goal, not by impressive numbers

Define the role

Decide whether Pitch is replacing the source, creating a support layer, changing register or adding a transition effect.

Start at Dry/Wet 100%

For evaluation, hear the processed signal clearly first. Parallel blending can hide artifacts and make tuning harder.

Set Semitones

Choose the broad musical or dramatic shift before fine tuning. Large changes should be judged against picture and context, not in solo only.

Refine with Cents

Use cents only after the main interval is right. Small values can create width or instability; large fine offsets effectively approach the next semitone.

Blend if needed

Lower Dry/Wet when the original should remain. Re-check mono and transient clarity, especially on percussive SFX.

Automate intentionally

If Pitch is only for a reveal, transition or hit, automate the effect rather than leaving an extreme setting active across the whole track.

4. Useful scenarios

Pitch is strongest when the picture gives it a reason

Impacts and transitions

Lower a duplicate for weight or shift a designed riser/hit into a different register. Automate around the event instead of processing unrelated material.

Layered SFX

Create supporting variants from one source, then combine them carefully. Cents can help prevent exact duplication, while semitones create clearly separated layers.

Music texture

Use musical intervals when the source has a defined pitch. Check the result against harmony; a technically valid shift can still be musically wrong.

Designed voice effect

Pitch can create a deliberately altered character, but it is not a substitute for dialogue repair. Clean the source first when intelligibility matters.

5. Pitch vs related tools

Static transposition is not the same as modulation or time stretching

Pitch

A compact static shift defined by Semitones and Cents, with Dry/Wet blending.

Modulation

Creates movement over time. Its Frequency block can modulate pitch-like behavior cyclically instead of holding one fixed transposition.

Elastic Wave

Blackmagic documents Elastic Wave as a duration-retiming tool that can change clip timing without changing pitch. That is a different problem from this Pitch FX.
