A live-interface guide to Fairlight Distortion in Resolve 21: filtering, distortion character, Level, Ceiling, Dry/Wet, output gain and a practical way to add harmonics without losing control of the signal.

1. Interface anatomy
What every visible Distortion control does
The ranges and labels below are taken from the supplied live Resolve 21 interface. Values shown in that screenshot describe one plug-in state, not a universal preset. Where the UI does not expose a clear textual name for a mode, this guide does not invent one.
Input / Output meters
The side meters make it possible to compare level before and after processing. Use them together with bypass/A-B listening so a louder processed signal is not automatically mistaken for a better one.
Waveform display
The center display visualizes a reference waveform against the processed shape and includes horizontal ceiling guides. It is a diagnostic aid; the final decision still comes from listening in context.
Distortion character selector
Two icon buttons are visible in the current UI. The supplied screenshot has the left mode selected. Because the live window does not display text names for these modes, this page identifies them by their visible curve icons rather than assigning undocumented labels.
Distortion Level
Visible range 0–100%. This is the main intensity control inside the Distortion block. Raise it while matching output loudness and watch how the waveform and tonal density change.
Ceiling
Visible range −24 dB to 0 dB. The waveform view also marks horizontal ceiling guides, so this control should be treated as part of the non-linear shaping behavior rather than as a substitute for a dedicated final limiter.
High Cut / Low Cut
The live UI shows High Cut from 1 kHz to 20 kHz and Low Cut from 20 Hz to 1 kHz. These filters let you limit which frequency region reaches or remains in the distorted sound, which is useful for controlling harshness or low-frequency buildup.
Dry/Wet
The Output block blends the dry and processed signal. The screenshot displays 100.0 toward the Wet side. Do not treat 100% wet as the default choice: parallel-style blending can preserve articulation while still adding character.
Output Level
Visible range −24 dB to +24 dB, with the screenshot at 0.0. Use it primarily to level-match the processed and bypassed versions before deciding whether the distortion actually improves the sound.
Unlabeled auxiliary control
A small 'A' control is visible next to Output Level in the supplied UI. Its purpose is not described by the public Fairlight page and is not inferred here. We will document it only after an official/manual confirmation or an additional UI state makes its role explicit.
2. What distortion changes
Non-linearity creates new spectral content
Distortion changes the relationship between input amplitude and output shape. In practical audio terms, that creates additional harmonic content and alters transients and perceived density. The Fairlight graph makes this visible by overlaying the reference and processed waveforms.
That does not make distortion automatically a 'loudness' tool. Use Output Level for matching and listen for texture, edge, density and intelligibility instead of judging by level alone.

3. Practical workflows
Where Distortion is useful in a real mix
Sound-design impact
Automate or apply Distortion to a selected effect, transition or impact when you want a deliberately harder, denser timbre rather than a transparent level change.
Lo-fi / communication texture
Combine filtering with moderate distortion to narrow the spectrum and add character for screens, radios, intercom-style cues or stylized voice moments. Keep intelligibility under control.
Parallel character
Use Dry/Wet below fully wet to retain the clean attack while adding harmonic density underneath. This is often more controllable than pushing the distortion level alone.
Automation moments
Fairlight can automate plug-in parameters over time. Distortion is especially useful when it appears only for a transition, phrase, hit or scene change instead of sitting permanently on the entire track.
4. Signal-chain decisions
Distortion before or after EQ, Limiter and Reverb?
EQ before Distortion
Pre-filtering changes what frequency content drives the non-linear stage. This is useful when one part of the spectrum is making the distortion overly harsh or muddy.
EQ after Distortion
Post-EQ shapes the new harmonic content created by the effect. This is a different job from filtering the input, so the two placements are not interchangeable.
Limiter after Distortion
If the sound-design chain creates unpredictable peaks, a dedicated Limiter later in the chain can provide final peak control. Do not assume the Distortion Ceiling is the same thing as the dedicated Limiter FX.
Reverb after Distortion
This places the distorted source inside a cleaner space. Useful when the character should belong to the source but the ambience should remain coherent.
Distortion after Reverb
Now the reverb tail itself is part of the non-linear processing. This is a more aggressive sound-design choice and can quickly increase density.
Clip vs Track
Fairlight FX can be applied to a clip or inserted on a mixer channel. Use clip processing for isolated moments and track inserts when the same character must follow the whole track.
5. Common mistakes
How Distortion gets out of control
Judging the louder version
A louder processed signal often feels more exciting. Match Output Level before deciding whether the timbre is genuinely better.
100% Wet by habit
Full Wet can destroy articulation or transient definition. Use Dry/Wet deliberately rather than treating the maximum as a default.
Ignoring the filters
Distortion creates extra spectral energy. High/Low Cut are there to stop the result from becoming unnecessarily harsh or overloaded at the extremes.
Using it as a limiter
The Distortion Ceiling is part of this effect's shaping UI. For explicit peak-management tasks use the dedicated Limiter or built-in Dynamics limiter and monitor gain reduction.
