Reverb is one of the Fairlight FX Blackmagic explicitly highlights for creative sound design. This guide focuses on the workflow that stays useful across versions: clip versus track processing, shared bus reverb, room matching, depth, automation and listening for the direct sound, reflections and tail instead of memorizing a preset.

1. What reverb is doing

You are not adding an effect so much as defining a space

Blackmagic currently lists reverb as a Fairlight FX used alongside repair and other creative audio tools. Fairlight plug-ins can be applied to a single clip or to an entire track, and multiple plug-ins can be arranged in an ordered chain.

For practical mixing, think in three audible layers: the direct source, the first reflections that tell the ear how close the boundaries are, and the later tail that describes the persistence of the space. Those are listening concepts, not a promise that every Resolve version labels the controls exactly the same way.

2. Track or shared bus

Use one room when several sounds are supposed to inhabit the same room

Current Fairlight routing is built around FlexBus. Tracks can send post-fader information to multiple buses, and buses can route onward to additional buses. That makes a shared reverb bus a clean professional pattern: dialogue, Foley and effects can send different amounts into the same acoustic space while keeping their dry levels independent.

3. Practical listening

Match the scene before trying to make the reverb impressive

Dialogue

For normal dialogue, the first job is usually continuity: ADR, production sound and room tone should feel as if they belong to the same location. If the reverb becomes the main thing you notice, it is often too strong for natural speech.

Foley

Footsteps and handled objects need enough space to sit inside the image. A completely dry Foley recording can feel pasted on top of the picture even when timing is perfect.

SFX

Creative effects can use more obvious reverberation for scale, distance or stylization, but keep the effect consistent with the scene's perspective and the rest of the mix.

Music

When adding reverb to music inside a film mix, ask whether it creates useful depth or simply washes out rhythm and dialogue space. The answer should be made in the full mix, not solo.

4. Where it sits in the chain

The position of reverb changes what reaches the space

Clean first

If a dialogue clip has hum or steady noise, repair it before feeding the problem into a long spatial tail. Otherwise the reverb can make the defect more audible and harder to separate from the scene.

Tone before or around space

EQ and dynamics change how the source excites the reverb. A brighter or more compressed input can produce a very different sense of space than the raw recording.

Automate when the scene changes

Fairlight automation can record parameter changes over time. Use that when perspective, location or dramatic emphasis changes instead of forcing one static effect setting across the whole sequence.
