MediaIn

Resolve timeline source

Brings the source image from DaVinci Resolve into the Fusion node graph and controls how that source is interpreted.

MediaIn
DaVinci Resolve · Fusion

MediaIn is the standard bridge from the Resolve timeline, a Fusion Composition or Media Pool source into Fusion.

Overview

What MediaIn does

MediaIn is usually the first image-producing node in a Fusion composition created from a Resolve clip. It does not browse for a file like Loader; it receives frames from Resolve and exposes them to the rest of the graph.

Because MediaIn sits at the boundary between Resolve and Fusion, source interpretation matters. Field processing, media source, layer selection and color-space/gamma overrides can affect every node downstream.

If a Fusion viewer looks different from the Edit or Color page, verify MediaIn before compensating later in the graph. An incorrect source mode or color interpretation can make the whole comp harder to diagnose.

Mental model

Think of MediaIn as the input connector from Resolve into Fusion: it receives the source and hands it to the node graph with the chosen temporal, layer and color interpretation.

Common uses

Start a Fusion effect from a timeline clip
Feed footage into tracking or keying
Use a Media Pool source in a Fusion Composition
Troubleshoot field-order problems
Override source color space or gamma when necessary
Access a specific layer from a supported source

Important parameters

Clip Name

Shows the Resolve clip or Fusion Composition currently feeding MediaIn.

Image: Process Mode — Full Frames

Sets Image to Process Mode — Full Frames.

Image: Process Mode — NTSC Fields

Sets Image to Process Mode — NTSC Fields.

Image: Process Mode — PAL/HD Fields

Sets Image to Process Mode — PAL/HD Fields.

Media Source — Timeline

Uses the current Resolve timeline item as the image source.

Media Source — Background

Uses the composition’s background source/context when that source mode is available.

Media Source — Media Pool

Uses a Media Pool item as the MediaIn source when the composition supports that mode.

Layer

Selects a specific available layer from the source.

Useful with layered or multi-channel sources that Resolve exposes to Fusion.

Source Color Space: Color Space Type — Auto

Selects how the source color space is specified.

Source Color Space: Color Space Type — Space

Selects how the source color space is specified.

Source Gamma Space: Curve Type — Auto

Uses Curve Type — Auto for source gamma space.

Source Gamma Space: Curve Type — Space

Uses Curve Type — Space for source gamma space.

Source Gamma Space: Curve Type — Log

Uses Curve Type — Log for source gamma space.

Remove Curve

Removes the selected gamma or transfer curve so the source is treated in a linearized form.

Pre-Divide / Post-Multiply

Helps manage premultiplied alpha behavior.

These controls matter when semi-transparent edges show dark or bright fringes after color operations.

Settings

Standard Fusion node settings for processing, masks, blending and animation.

Practical setup

A reliable workflow

  1. 1

Open the desired timeline clip or Fusion Composition in Fusion.

  2. 2

Confirm that MediaIn shows the intended Resolve source.

  3. 3

Leave Process Mode on Full Frames for progressive footage.

  4. 4

Verify color-space and gamma interpretation if the image differs from the rest of Resolve.

  5. 5

Connect MediaIn to the first processing node and keep source fixes near the start of the graph.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

Using MediaIn like Loader and expecting it to browse arbitrary disk files.
Changing source color space to fix a creative grading problem.
Selecting an interlaced process mode for progressive media.
Troubleshooting downstream nodes before confirming the correct source reaches Fusion.

Production notes

Practical tips

Keep technical source interpretation at the beginning of the graph.
Name multiple MediaIn nodes by purpose in complex comps.
When alpha edges look wrong, check premultiplication before adding blur or matte fixes.
