What Emboss does

Creates an embossed or engraved relief by converting image detail into directional highlights and shadows.

Emboss turns local image contrast into a directional light-and-shadow relief. Emboss Style selects the response, Power sets its depth/intensity and Angle determines the apparent light direction across the relief.

Because the calculation reacts to every local transition, noise and compression can become unwanted texture. Clean the source for polished lettering and logos, or deliberately keep the texture when building a rough metallic, paper or engraved look.

Mental model

Imagine a light grazing across a shallow height map: one side of an edge brightens, the opposite side darkens, and flat regions stay closer to neutral.
