Extrude
Fast 2D pseudo-depth from alpha
Krokodove 2D image effect that adds a side-wall illusion to alpha-defined graphics, with Length, perspective, side color and a separate Light tab; not Extrude3D geometry.
Extrude
Overview
What Extrude does
**Identity and data type.** Resolve 21 Krokodove Extrude is an image-processing effect that suggests a side wall behind an alpha-defined silhouette. It is not Extrude3D: there is no 3D ShapeInput, geometry scene, material, camera or Renderer3D. Its result is a normal processed RGBA image.
**Captured Controls state.** extrude-controls.png shows Perspective Type=Parallel, Length=0.009999, Color Type=Solid and a blue Color R=0, G=0, B=1, A=1. These are one saved Inspector state, not guaranteed factory defaults or cross-resolution presets.
**Perspective Type modes.** The historical Krokodove reference lists Parallel and Radial. The captured control highlights Parallel while Radial appears dim. That styling alone does not prove Radial is disabled; test its availability in the actual Resolve installation before relying on it.
**Length is not physical Z.** Length changes the apparent extent of a 2D side wall; it does not turn the object into 3D geometry for a moving camera. Compare the same Text+ at ~0.01 and a slightly larger setting at 100% Viewer, watching letter counters and the image domain.
**Color Type and side color.** Solid uses explicit Color/R/G/B/Alpha controls; Original is a historically documented alternative for deriving color from the source. The photo confirms Solid selected, not that Original can be selected in this build. Teach with Solid and change one RGBA component at a time.
**Alpha: source versus side.** Source Text+ alpha defines the shape and transparent edge; the Color panel Alpha changes the opacity of the chosen side-wall color. These are different functions. Inspect Output.Alpha on contrasting backgrounds, especially with semi-transparent side color.
**Light tab evidence.** The second PNG confirms Use Light checked, Angle=45, Remove Detail=0 and Importance=1.0. These controls belong to internal 2D shading, not Fusion DirectionalLight3D, SpotLight3D or its physical shadow system. Turn Use Light off for an A/B baseline before adjusting anything else.
**Remove Detail and Importance need an A/B.** The labels and saved values are evidenced, but the exact mathematical action of these two controls is not established by these Inspector crops. Do not claim that Importance is definitely a light-power slider or a geometry-detail threshold until a controlled live experiment isolates their effects.
**Compositing order.** Begin with Text+ or alpha-correct PNG → Extrude → optional ColorCorrector/Glow; route the processed image into Merge.Foreground and a video/background into Merge.Background. This stays in 2D; connecting it directly to Merge3D/Renderer3D is a stream-type error.
**Keep the front face clean.** If the glyph face is visually contaminated, split Text+ into two branches: one goes through Extrude for the back layer, while original Text+ is merged on top. Then composite the result over footage. This separates wall styling from face styling but depends on correct alpha and Background/Foreground ordering.
**Sockets and Settings are not photographed.** Both original PNGs show Inspector rather than Node Editor. The assumed image Input/Output and possible blue Effect Mask are teaching contracts pending a live socket check. The closed Settings tab is not evidence of its inner controls, so do not invent them.
**Animated acceptance.** Check resolution, alpha, edges and keyframe transitions across several frames—not from a static Inspector. Change Length and Angle conservatively; at 24 fps compare frames 0, 24, 48 and 72. A structurally valid teaching graph does not prove GPU rendering or constitute an exported .comp.
When to use it
2D depth illusion for clean-alpha Text+ and logos.
Colored side walls on icons, labels and badges.
Graphic long-extrusion titles once length and clipping have been checked.
Clean front-face compositing over a separate extruded backing.
Quick title motion graphics without a 3D renderer or camera.
