FlickerAddition
Procedural temporal exposure and color variation
Procedural flicker in Lift, Gamma, Gain, Vignette and Grade and Alpha Out, with RGB channel selection, pauses and repeatable Seed.
FlickerAddition
Overview
What FlickerAddition does
FlickerAddition procedurally adds temporal variation to an image. It is a deliberate creative look for aging projectors, unsteady lamps, analog footage and stylized scenes. It should not be mistaken for Deflicker, which removes unwanted instability.
Two original Resolve 21 Inspector captures show five Flicker Type selections: Lift, Gamma, Gain, Vignette and Grade and Alpha Out. Selecting the operator matters more than simply raising Range, because shadows, midtones, highlights and frame edges respond differently.
Range controls amplitude, Speed sets temporal rate, and Smoothness changes the continuity of transitions. A still image cannot demonstrate whether the generated pattern jitters, drifts or pauses appropriately; evaluate several seconds at the native timeline frame rate.
Red, Green and Blue are independent component toggles. All channels selected tends toward tonal exposure changes. Selective channels create intentional chromatic changes that are particularly easy to overdo on skin and neutral objects.
Qualities offers Randomness Scale, Pause Length, Pause Interval and Random Seed. The first three help shape temporal irregularity and holds; Seed chooses a reproducible random sequence, not an additional strength or image-quality control.
Grade and Alpha Out is a mode label, not evidence of a dedicated second Alpha output socket. Older guides called the fifth mode Alpha. Check the current effect in both RGB and Alpha Viewers and under downstream compositing before drawing behavioral conclusions.
The two source PNGs show only the Controls panel and Flicker Type menu, not actual Flow connectors. Accordingly, the vetted training graph certifies only the primary 2D image pipeline; an effect-specific physical mask socket remains unverified.
For a flickering practical light, retain the clean source on Merge. Background, route the flickered image into Merge.Foreground, and feed a confirmed Rectangle/Ellipse mask into Merge.EffectMask. This isolates the intended region without relying on undocumented FX sockets.
Judge the look after your main grade on a representative sequence using playback, waveform, RGB Parade and alpha inspection. Moving the same settings across a CST/DRT can change the perceived exposure swing.
Static typed examples verify graph consistency only; they are not evidence of actual temporal render parity, proprietary alpha math, performance, or delivery output in the user’s Resolve build.
When to use it
Old projector or unsteady lamp without hand-keyed exposure.
Selective light-source flicker isolated in a separate composite.
Mild film-style exposure breathing.
Chromatic analog drift or neon instability.
Uneven temporal pauses in a repeatable flicker pattern.
