Overview

What PseudoColor does

Blackmagic describes Pseudo Color as an Effect node that produces static or animated color variations from waveforms generated by the node's own controls. It is neither a LUT nor a conventional Hue/Saturation processor: each RGBA channel is procedurally modified.

Red, Green, Blue and Alpha are four identical tabs of the same tool. Each tab has its own Color checkbox plus Wrap, Low, High, Soft Edge, Waveform, Frequency, Phase, Mean and Amplitude. Adjusting Red therefore targets the red channel, while the Alpha tab can modify transparency.

Low and High determine the range affected in the current channel. A grayscale or value-driven source is especially useful for diagnostics because matching R/G/B values form a readable coordinate range, but PseudoColor does not expose a separate Luminance source input: prepare a luma-driven source upstream when that is the intended mapping.

Wrap applies to waveform values, not frame edges and not Low/High as a repeating window. Blackmagic documents that waveform values exceeding allowable parameter values wrap to the opposite extreme. Its effect is easiest to see when Mean and Amplitude push the waveform beyond the normal range.

Waveform is one menu with Sine, Triangle, Sawtooth and Square choices. Frequency increases the number of occurrences of the variations, while Phase shifts the waveform; Blackmagic explicitly notes that animating Phase creates color cycling. Mean sets the waveform level and Amplitude changes its overall power.

Soft Edge controls the softness of the color transition at the affected range boundary. It is not a spatial image blur and does not replace mask feathering. PseudoColor computes its channel remap first, then the normal blue Effect Mask gates where the finished effect is visible.

PseudoColor is not a stand-alone generator. The orange Image input is required for a meaningful result. Background, FastNoise or Plasma may be used upstream as sources, but PseudoColor itself only modifies an existing image.

The Settings tab contains Fusion's common Effect controls. This reference keeps those common controls separate from the node-specific RGBA waveform logic so Blend/mask processing is not confused with PseudoColor's unique channel controls.

When to use it

  • Pseudo-color visualization of grayscale or value-driven maps

  • Color cycling by animating Phase without rebuilding the node graph

  • Repeating color bands and contour-like ranges with Frequency and Waveform

  • Diagnostic display of technical grayscale passes

  • Procedural recoloring of FastNoise, Plasma, Gradient and other generated sources

  • Stylized channel remapping with different waveforms for R/G/B

  • Controlled Alpha-channel processing on the dedicated Alpha tab

  • Local pseudo-color treatments using a normal post-process Effect Mask
