sExpand
Expand or contract Shape geometry
Expands or contracts an incoming vector shape. Amount offsets its boundary, Border Style controls corner joins, and sRender turns the result into an image.
sExpand
Overview
What sExpand does
Start with a simple filled shape and Amount 0. This reference preserves the initial boundary and isolates sExpand from the generator’s dimensions, rotation and style.
BMD explicitly documents both signs of Amount: positive expands and negative contracts. Do not present the value as a pixel count: the shape operation precedes sRender, where raster dimensions are set.
Border Style controls the joins between offset sides. Bevel cuts the protrusion, Round rounds it, and Miter and Miter Clip retain a pointed section up to the Miter Limit. It is not an edge-blur switch.
Miter Limit appears only for Miter or Miter Clip. The retained PNG has a rounded style selected, so the slider is hidden. Select the relevant style before looking for this conditional control.
The original Solid entry is retained in the reference, but belongs to the upstream generator. There is no such checkbox in sExpand Controls. Treat a filled shape and an open outline as different source data.
For an outer ring, split one source: send its expanded branch to sBoolean Input1 and the original to Input2, then select Subtract. The ring is the difference between two regions, so input order matters.
Strong erosion can remove thin sections, and expansion can bring nearby boundaries together. Inspect the most complex source and its animation; topology is not guaranteed to remain unchanged at every Amount.
Check style, geometry and rasterization in sequence. First inspect the shape through sRender, then inspect RGB and alpha separately. Add any required soft raster edge processing after sRender.
When to use it
Expand a technical shape-matte region.
Contract a filled shape without moving its source points.
Build an outer ring with sBoolean Subtract.
Compare rounded and beveled corners.
Animate geometric growth or erosion.
Prepare a shape for a later boolean operation.
