sGrid

Procedural vector grid generator

Replicates an incoming shape in rows and columns. Grid Cells X/Y set the instance counts, X/Y Offset set their separation, and sRender converts the shape array into an image.

sGrid

Overview

What sGrid does

BMD describes sGrid as replication of an incoming shape. Connect sEllipse, sRectangle or a compound shape from sMerge or sBoolean. sGrid is not a standalone coordinate-line generator.

Grid Cells X is the column count and Grid Cells Y the row count. For one disc, 4×3 means twelve placements of that source shape. A compound source retains all its parts in each instance.

X Offset and Y Offset control separation between columns and rows. With both at zero, instances coincide at one location. Increasing them spreads the instances; it is not equivalent to translating the whole array.

The manual gives X Offset 1.0 as spreading the columns across the frame width. Use the sRender frame and a reference shape for setup; do not treat Offset as a pixel step or infer a universal coordinate formula from one PNG.

Place sTransform after sGrid to move an already assembled grid. Its X/Y Offset translate the entire input stream, separating count, separation and array placement.

Set the element dimensions at the source or before sGrid. Changing sEllipse Width/Height changes the discs themselves, while Grid Cells changes their number of placements. Pattern density depends on both dimensions and separation.

The source style is carried into the copies. sChangeStyle before sGrid can set a common color and alpha behavior for subsequent overlaps; after sGrid it restyles the assembled stream. sGrid has no Style tab of its own.

Inspect the array through sRender, including the frame edge. Coincident or off-frame instances do not mean Grid Cells decreased. Check the placement count, visible area and alpha at overlaps separately.

When to use it

  • Repeat dots, tiles or badges in rows and columns.

  • Build a graphic pattern from one editable shape.

  • Replicate a compound badge from sMerge.

  • Animate an array spreading from coincident instances.

  • Move the complete array separately through sTransform.

  • Prepare a shape pattern for rasterization and compositing.
