uSwitch

USD branch switcher

Selects one of several USD stage inputs by source index, making scene variants and branch comparisons easy to manage.

uSwitch is a routing node for USD stages. It can expose multiple named inputs and choose which branch is active, which is useful for asset variants, lighting alternatives, layout versions and technical A/B comparisons.

Overview

What uSwitch does

uSwitch is a routing node for USD stages. It can expose multiple named inputs and choose which branch is active, which is useful for asset variants, lighting alternatives, layout versions and technical A/B comparisons.

Mental model

Think of uSwitch as a selector on the stage graph: several complete USD branches can wait upstream, but only the chosen Source continues downstream.

Common uses

Switch between asset variants
Compare lighting rigs
Select layout versions
Route alternate USD stages
Build controllable scene templates

Inspector

Important parameters

Start with these controls before reaching for more complicated workarounds.

Source

Chooses which input branch is active.

Export as Separate Stage

Packages the selected branch as its own USD stage.

Number of Inputs

Controls how many stage inputs the node exposes.

Name 0 / Name 1

Labels inputs for readable routing.

Config

Manages input configuration.

Practical setup

A reliable workflow

  1. 1

    Create the alternate USD branches.

  2. 2

Set the number of inputs on uSwitch.

  3. 3

Give each input a meaningful name.

  4. 4

    Connect the alternatives.

  5. 5

Change Source to validate every branch.

  6. 6

Send the selected stage to uRenderer or uExport.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

Leaving generic input names in a complex graph.
Assuming uSwitch blends branches; it selects one branch.
Connecting branches with incompatible scene assumptions and expecting a seamless switch.

Production notes

Practical tips

Name inputs by creative intent, not numbers.
Use uSwitch for look-development comparisons before committing to one branch.
Keep shared downstream rendering identical for fair A/B tests.
