GamutLimiter

Constrain colors to a target gamut

Constrains out-of-gamut colors from a declared current gamut/gamma into a selected limiting gamut while preserving as much useful color as possible.

GamutLimiter is used when highly saturated or wide-gamut values must be kept inside a smaller delivery or processing gamut without simply clipping every channel independently.

Overview

What GamutLimiter does

GamutLimiter is used when highly saturated or wide-gamut values must be kept inside a smaller delivery or processing gamut without simply clipping every channel independently.

Mental model

Place a boundary around the legal color volume and push colors that escape that boundary back inside it.

Common uses

Keep wide-gamut graphics inside Rec.709
Control saturated VFX colors before delivery
Protect broadcast/display output from extreme chroma
Limit only a selected region with a mask

Important parameters

Start with these controls before reaching for more complicated workarounds.

Current Gamut

Declares the gamut in which the incoming values are expressed.

Correct input declaration is essential because gamut boundaries depend on the source space.

Current Gamut: Rec.709

Sets Current Gamut to Rec.709.

Current Gamut: DaVinci Wide Gamut / ACES / ACEScg

Sets Current Gamut to DaVinci Wide Gamut / ACES / ACEScg.

Current Gamut: Camera Gamuts

Sets Current Gamut to Camera Gamuts.

Current Gamma

Declares the incoming transfer function.

Choose Linear, log or display gamma according to the actual pipeline stage.

Current Gamma: Linear

Uses Linear for current gamma.

Current Gamma: Log Profiles

Uses Log Profiles for current gamma.

Current Gamma: Gamma 2.2 / 2.4 / 2.5 / 2.6

Uses Gamma 2.2 / 2.4 / 2.5 / 2.6 for current gamma.

Limit Gamut

Selects the gamut boundary to enforce.

Typical targets include Rec.709, P3 or another known delivery gamut.

Limit Gamut: Rec.709

Sets Limit Gamut to Rec.709.

Limit Gamut: P3 / DCI / ACEScg / Wide gamuts

Sets Limit Gamut to P3 / DCI / ACEScg / Wide gamuts.

Pre-Divide / Post-Multiply

Handles transparent premultiplied pixels safely.

Enable for graphics or keyed elements when edge colors are affected.

Practical setup

A reliable workflow

  1. 1

Confirm the current gamut and gamma.

  2. 2

Select the legal or desired limiting gamut.

  3. 3

View the most saturated frames in the shot.

  4. 4

Compare the limited result against hard clipping.

  5. 5

Keep the limiter close to the stage where the target gamut requirement actually matters.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

Declaring the wrong current gamut
Using a limiter as a substitute for a proper color-space transform
Limiting too early and unnecessarily reducing working-gamut headroom

Production notes

Practical tips

Use a gamut warning or scopes when evaluating the need for limiting.
Keep the working space wide; limit when crossing into a real delivery constraint.
