GamutMapping is designed for controlled compression of luminance and chroma when source values exceed the practical range of the target display or color volume.

Mental model

Instead of chopping off values that do not fit, reshape the source brightness and color volume so important relationships survive inside a smaller target range.

Gamma

Declares the gamma/log domain of the incoming image.

Choose the actual working transfer function so luminance mapping behaves predictably.

Max. Input Luminance

Defines the expected upper source luminance.

Set this to meaningful source conditions rather than an arbitrary number.

Max. Output Luminance

Defines the target peak luminance.

This controls how aggressively highlights need to be compressed.

Avg. Input Luminance

Provides a scene-average reference for methods that use it.

A realistic average helps maintain midtone intent.

Gamut Mapping Method

Chooses how out-of-gamut color is compressed.

Select a method that balances hue stability, saturation and target-gamut fit.

Sets Gamut Mapping Method to None.

Gamut Mapping Method: Saturation Compression

Sets Gamut Mapping Method to Saturation Compression.

Gamut Mapping Method: Clip

Sets Gamut Mapping Method to Clip.

Apply Forward OOTF

Applies the selected color space’s forward opto-optical transfer function before gamut mapping.

Apply Inverse OOTF

Applies the inverse opto-optical transfer function as part of the gamut-mapping transform.

Pre-Divide / Post-Multiply

Controls premultiplied-alpha handling around the operation.

Pre-divide removes alpha multiplication before processing; post-multiply restores it afterward. This is useful when color work creates dark or bright fringes around translucent edges.
